It's ALL About the Shore (SNS 7/6/2013)

FOURTH OF JULY, ANY PARK (POST-SANDY):  As the blog, still trailing behind, finally makes it into July, we are in the heart of summer.  It's actually the 19th when I'm writing this, and we are in the middle of a heat wave which has reached its seventh day.    And, no doubt, everyone, except maybe those who just want to adore their air conditioned homes, is flocking down the shore.

Well, for the Fourth this year, a rather hot weekend in its own right, myself, Barb and our young friends Emily and Victoria made it down to Wildwood Crest for six days and five nights.    As for the rain that plagued much of May and June, all I could say is, "what rain?".   A shower on the Garden State Parkway on the way down....then that was it...spectacular sunrises and sunsets.    During that time, we visited the Cape May Zoo, Hereford Lighthouse in North Wildwood, Cape May proper as well as Sunset Beach (gotta find those Cape May diamonds!), walking the boards at Wildwood, and of course, hanging on the beach at The Crest, where we set up camp for the duration.

It's fitting then, that being at the beach on the major holiday of the summer, that my new number one song is "At the Beach", local artist Paul Czekaj's ode to the good times at the Jersey Shore.    It makes the top in just four weeks; only six songs have made this jump in this or less amount of time.    And no doubt, that song went through my head much of the weekend, and it still is.     There are many songs about summer over the years, and, although Jersey isn't mentioned in the lyrics (unlike Paul's other songs that have made my list), looking at the video, and even by listening, you know it's all about the Garden State.

We're in the heart of the summer, so enjoy this song, watch the video as much as you can.   And once again this year, after Labor Day, I'll be unveiling my top songs of the summer, and you know this one should be in the thick of it.

OTHER STUFF:    Music, although not playing a major role on the trip, still had some mention over those days.   I had my iPod going, of course, and songs like Kurt Vile's "Waking On a Pretty Day " (#16), with it's long drawn out easy groovin' jam, was a presence.   Emily and Victoria are all of nineteen years old, having completed their first year in college, thus are exposed to current music.  Much of that current stuff is hip-hop oriented, of course, but two bands they mentioned:  Daft Punk and Phoenix.    While "Get Lucky" is a well known song and transcends genres (as well as eras), and stands at #2 on both SNS and Billboard, and which Victoria set another song from their latest album to one of the videos she was making, the girl's knew about Phoenix.   When their current "Trying to Be Cool" was on my iPod, I told them is was by "a band called Phoenix",  they commented me on having good taste in music.    No doubt that many of the songs on my list will be related to this nice summer weekend.

A LITTLE PICK-ME-UP:  The Top Debut this week is the latest single by Silversun Pickups, "Dots & Dashes", the third one from their recent effort, Neck of the Woods.  It follows "Bloody Mary" (#7) and "The Pit" (#22).   It's what you'd expect from the indie/dream poppers from LA.   It starts a bit easy but the intensity increases toward the end.    This has been one of my favorite bands for about four years now.   The closest they'll be is in Long Island, with dates in Port Chester and Huntington on August 5 and 7, respectively.

MORE FUN.  Having unexpectedly landed three top 20 pop singles (and SNS ones, too), top 40 is probably done with Nate Ruess and fun, but there's a fourth single from Some Nights to enjoy.   As "Carry On" logs its 36th week on the list, the new one, "Why Am I The One" enters.  Another good song, that could land them another hit, although radio (pop or alternative) isn't biting yet.   A bit subdued, with hints of early 70's pop rock harmonies, makes for a good listen.

EVERYBODY INTO THE SMALLPOOLS:   As far as bands new to SNS, the next highest debut is "Dreaming", by Smallpools.    Another from the LA area, this is from their self-titled debut album.  Not much is known about this band, and their current tour is on the West Coast, but perhaps we'll know more who these guys are shortly.
