BELATION: Very, very late, so I will keep it pretty brief and go with a long one for this current week. "Change" by Churchill remains at the top, with Adele and Grace Potter not too far behind in the next two positions. Potter now has a second entry in the Top 20, with "Runaway", and with "Stars", coming off a great performance by Amanda Brown on The Voice a couple weeks back, hitting the Billboard Hot 100 (by both artists), I really think Grace will finally become a breakthrough artist (it's up to #32 on the Adult Top 40 Chart). Alabama Shakes enters the top 20, and so do, finally, The Lumineers, with "Ho Hey", taking 22 weeks and two separate chart runs to do so.
Just a few key new songs that I've been listening to: Thao and the Get Down Stay Down, a three-piece, two woman, one man indie-folk outfit from Falls Church, Virginia, move 79-59 with "Holy Roller", a very eclectic, but melodic and a bit exotic piece of music that is very addictive. We The Common, due out in January, 2013 will be the band's fifth album, of which this song is from. Nice band to check out. Pencil in The Bowery in New York City for March 22, 2013. Not only you'll get this band, but opening will be Sallie Ford and the Sound Outside, of which SNS readers will remember that band's #2 "I Swear".
REDUX: Three notable debuts two acts who have been in my Top 20 before: Gary Clark Jr has the Top debut, with "Ain't Messin' Around". Clark, coming off a top 20 SNS hit with "Bright Lights", sheds the blues trappings and comes up with an up-tempo, driving tune that shows another side to this Austin, Texas native, is worth many a spin as well. Clark's latest album is Blak and Blue, released this fall. Ra Ra Riot is back. The band hit my top 10 in early 2011 with "Too Dramatic", is back with "Beta Love", the title track from their forthcoming album, for this Syracuse NY baroque pop outfit. A bit more poppish than their prior song, but still off the wall enough for a few listens.
SEASONED: Now that we're past Thanksgiving, we are starting to see the first couple of Christmas songs hit the SNS 100. The early leaders are Colbie Caillat's 'Christmas In the Sand", and Cee Lo Green's take on "What Christmas Means to Me". Look for more in the coming weeks. Hopefully, a rock band will release a holiday tune, as Grace Potter did--and made my top 10--last year with "Naughty Naughty Children".
