Another Year Over! (SNS 100 - 12/17/2012)

It's the end of yet another year.   As I write this, it is Christmas afternoon and evening (even though the "official" date of this blog is December 17 (more on that later on).    By now, nany of you have finished unwrapping the gifts that Santa brought by overnight.    For us, we picked up an inch or two of light snow last night, adding to the spirit, and calling it officially, a white Christmas.

RECORDS BROKEN:   When you page down to my current chart, you'll notice that the new #1 song is "I Feel It In My Bones", by The Killers.   You will also notice that it is in RED, indicating that it's a holiday entry.    And yes, that's correct, the song becomes the first Christmas song to reach #1 in the three holiday seasons I've run this operation.     Several people finally checked out this great song and have agreed with me.    Thus, it's the first song to reach the top in just three weeks; a handful did it in four.

Just a few words about the debuts:   Several publications have come out with their year end lists, and I had added a couple of songs that have been out, but was unaware of their existance.   One such example is my Top Debut, "Lord Knows" by Dum Dum Girls.   For those with a memory, I very much loved "Coming Down", but couldn't find anything else from them.   Well, seems like they released an EP, End of Daze, and the song was well-received.   And yes, it's a very good song, maybe not immediate like "Coming..." but a worthy effort.    Again, it's time to keep your ears out for these noise-pop queens.

Next is Frank Ocean.  You may recall a few weeks ago, he was nominated for Grammys in some of the major categories, but I had never heard of this R&B artist.     He is popular and has been in the national Top 10.    I feared that it would just be uninspired hip-hop, but upon one listen, I was very wrong.   This has a very cool vide to it.   Yes, there's hip hop overtones, but it's mixed in with a lot of soul as well.   It's an easy going groove, and I enjoy this song a lot.   It's from his debut, Channel Orange.

Finally, we have another all-female band, which is actually a duo.  Deap Vally are from California, and their sounds are squarely aimed at rock's finer forms:  Garage, alternative, blues, you name it.  They've been described as White Stripes meets Led Zeppelin (although I can hear a hint of Black Sabbath as well).    Their latest album, The End of the World (which, as of this writing did NOT occur as it is 12/25!) as released in November.  On their latest tour, they've opened for such acts as Muse and The Vaccines.  It looks like they will be touring the UK for a while; hopefully they'll be back on US soil very soon.

Also debuting are the follow-ups to two national #1 pop songs:  Taylor Swift's "I Knew You Were Trouble" and Maroon 5's "Daylight".   More of what you'd expect; in Swift's case, again more compromising pop...in fact, the word "Trouble" is repeasted in the same vein as "Never, Ever" is from her last single, "We Are Never Getting Back Together".

THE FUTURE:   This is my last weekly blog of the year.   Still to come, of course is my Top 100 of 2012.     As for the weekly list, it will go on hiatus.    You will notice that technically this is my December 17th, blog, a date eight days past.     I am getting more and more late with this.   Originally, the intention was to come out with this on that Monday.  Unfortunately, most new songs are released on Tuesday, and I've had problems with great new stuff in which I'd have to wait eight days to download.    Therefore, I would post mid-week.     Again, a problem, as Billboard updates their charts every Thursday, and these charts draw ideas for new songs to download.    Then it became the weekend, which made sense as I could stay up late and finish it.    But the last few weeks have seen me coming out a week later with this.     Effective with the next blog, I will now be using the Saturday date, and eliminating any "week of" reference.    I believe it will be a more accurate representative of the time factor.

Also, wrting this week after week is very time consuming, so I may cut back some weeks.   The chart should still appear, but there may be weeks in which it's the only thing I will post.    That we will see.   But regardless, the next chart will be dated January 5, 2013.
