Age is More Than a Number (SNS 100 Week of 11/12/2012)

DEMO-STRATION:  Today I read an article that was posted in the trade magazine Friday Morning Quarterback (FMBQ) about the music that different demographics listen to, from a "new vs old" standpoint.   Basically, this article stated that teenagers listen to mostly new music and dispose of it rather quickly, and songs that were out just a few months ago are considered old.    Well, it was that way in the 1960's when a song that lasted three months on WABC's Music survey was considered a long time.   Chart turnover was much greater back then; obviously Baby Boomers accounted for a large share of the music pie.

The article goes on to say that the percentage of new music peaked around age 25 then started decreasing from this point on.    The new songs that older people listen to take a while to sink in, and if you're in your thirties, you might be listening to "current" music that might have been released last year and which your teenaged kids may think of as old!   This accounts for the Adult Contemporary radio formats charting songs for well over a year.    Also, oldies (or classic hits, as they're referred to in the 1980's and beyond), rise during these years.    People my age, (which is 56, yikes!) almost exclusively listen to old music.   Well, it's no secret that I do love old stuff, especially from the 1960's, but also 70's classic rock and funk,, much of the 1980's, and even 90's Alternative Rock as I was active in house shares both at the Jersey Shore as well as ski country in Vermont.   They do bring back good memories.

The point of all of this is that it's been over two years now since I tried to buck that trend:  Listening to more "new" music, whether it's in the mainstream or not, has been a priority for me.   I post a lot of old stuff, but I created a Facebook page, "Scenes 'n' Soundwaves Music Page", primarly for new music.   I had wondered if any of my friends, many the same age, or slightly older or younger, would be "into" the new stuff.   And surprisingly, they have.    Last week I posted my top ten songs, and got a lot of feedback on it, both good and bad.    But primarily it's a good thing either way.

ON THE CHARTS: A rather quiet week on the SNS charts, with the Top 5 holding intact, save for the swapping of postions 3 and 4 ("Lost In Time", The Satellites; "Default" Django Django), and one new top 10 entry (Golden Void).   Dinosaur Jr, and The Generationals enter the top 20.

POST BREAK-UP CHART ENTRY:   Let's go down to the Top Debut, which is "I Always Knew", by the British indie-rockers The Vaccines.    SNS readers know them from last year's hit "Post Break-Up Sex" which reached #7 on my chart and Top 30 for the 2011 year.   That song was from their debut What Did You Expect From the Vaccines.     "I Always Knew" hails from their sophomore set Come of Age, released in September.    The song adds a little retro-flux to their indie sound.   There's a bit mid-sixties pop thrown into their signature guitar-indie sound to it.   The song is a winner and should be a sizable hit, and perhaps make its way onto the national charts (the album is in The Alternate Side's Top 20 currently).    January 31 might seem far away (it isn't), but that's the date they will be at New York's Terminal 5.    Should be a great show.

I've somehow treated duo Matt & Kim with a bit of ambilvalence; I really don't know why.   I see them regularly on WEQX's playlist, but somehow it doesn't excite me.   Well, that is, until now; "Let's Go" is a very good song.  Like a lot of indie bands nowadays, they hail from Brooklyn.  The song has a doowop-ish feel to it, rather melodic and lively, a bit of stripped-down Brit invasion thrown in for good measure, but it belongs in the current day.    They are described as having a DIY attitude to their approach, and I can definitely see that.   If you haven't heard them yet, this is a good introduction.   The song, #27 on Billboard's Alternative charts, hails from the duo's fourth set Lightning.   As I write this (on November 16), they just finished a show at Terminal 5 on Thursday the 15th, and Saturday night the 17th will be at the Wellmont Theater in Montclair NJ.   If you can't catch them there this weekend, they will be at Madison Square Garden on February 8.

Finally, The Satelliters have made a big impact with "Out of Time", the song having hit #1 a couple weeks back, and some great reaction from my friends on this retro-garage rock gem.    While that song was a few years old, they DO have a newer album, Shake Shake Shake, released earlier in 2012, and I am going with the title cut.    Again, the band shows their garage rock tendencies, although this one is more of a mish-mash with other rock forms; unlike the last song, it takes a few listens to get an idea as to what's going on.     But the sound will, ultimately, win you over.
