Blow Me One Record Tyer (Music Review 9/17/2012)

FROM THE TOP:  Pink's "Blow Me (One Last Kiss)" sits atop the SNS 100 for a record-tying seventh week, as it also moves into the top five on Billboard's Hot 100.  It thus equals the feat of "Screws Get Loose" by Those Darlins, done earlier this year.     The Philadelphia-born songstress has released her new album this week, The Truth About Love.   The question, however, is whether she will break the record next week.

Well, I will have to say, it's pretty unlikely unless something happens drastically in the next few days.   Breathing down Pink's neck is "Elizabeth's Theme" by Dirty Beaches, which moves up to #2 and is very close to taking the top spot.    This, of course, is the instrumental that probably could have been on a George Winston album (not exactly, there's still some semblance of a rock edge here).   This week, I took a "chill day" down the shore, in Manasquan's Sea Watch beach.   I shot a few scenes of the ocean, dunes, and a few other things that I hope will be put together in a video that I plan on making.    I don't have enough footage yet, I plan on taking more when I go on vacation up in the mountains of Vermont and New York State in a couple of weeks.   I will let you know if and when this ever comes to fruition.

At #3 is "What Makes A Good Man", by The Heavy, inching back up to #3.   This is the band that did "How Do You Like Me Now" a few years ago that popped up on seemingly every other commerical.   Well, guess what?   I am starting to hear this one in various places as well....from commericals to TV news promos, to sports and other places.    And the song debuts on the Alternative chart this week.   Looks like this song isn't going anywhere anytime soon!

Django Django's "Default" flies into the Top 10 with a 21-9 move, while The Satelliters "Lost In Time" advances from 25 to 12.   Snow Patrol hits paydirt with the fourth single from their 2011 Fallin' Empires Set as "In the End" moves from 22 to 18.   It's the second song from that set to make the top 20.  "New York", the second release, reached #12.

SECOND ACTS:  The top four debuts this week are all follow-ups to key songs which have been hits either with me or nationally.    The top debut goes to Silversun Pickups' with "The Pit".   From the LA alt-rockers' latest effort Neck of The Woods.   "Bloody Mary" reached #7 both on SNS as well as Billboard's Aternative chart.   You can catch them at Terminal 5 in New York on October 14 and 15.

You know the story of Ellie Goulding's "Lights" by now.   It was almost a year ago--October 3, 2011--that the song entered my SNS chart.  It was #1 by the end of the year.  Meanwhile, the song really didn't catch onm a national level until a couple months ago, and it finally rose to #2 just about a month ago.  I re-added the song, and it has added another ten weeks onto its total.     Well, while some radio formats are still on that song--it rises to #2 on the Adult Top 40 chart, a new single is finally released:  another good one entitled "Anything Could Happen".  Let's hope we're still not talking about this one in September 2013 and that it'll have a great immediate impact.

Next is Metric's second single from Synthetica, "Breathing Underwater" comes in at #87 and is the follow-up to the #1 "Youth Without Youth".   For some reason I always pair these Canadians up with the previoiusly mentioned Silversun Pickups.    Perhaps it's the female lead singers, or that fact that they seem to release songs at the same time.     The two bands ranked #1 and #2 on my Top 100 of 2009 so that has got something to do with it.   As I am writing this on Saturday the 22nd, they will be at Radio City Music Hall on Sunday the 23rd, so better hurry up and get some tickets!

Finally, there's Taylor Swift's "Ronan".   As her national #1 "We Are Never Getting Back Together" moves up the charts, this one was featured in the TV special for "Stand Up To Cancer".   Unlike her hit, which is pure pop, this one is a ballad and more towards her country roots.   She had a heartfelt performance on the special and it translates nicely to record.   Worth a listen.

I have listed my "tremors" in quite a while (songs which are below #100)...it takes long enough writing this as it is, but down at #105 is "Gangnam Style" by Psy.   A Korean-born artist who has been around a while, the song is one big rave and a new dance to boot.    Move over Cha-cha slide! More on this one as it debuts next week.
