Let’s get right to the music this week. At the top for the sixth week is Pink’s “Blow Me (One Last Kiss)”. The pop-rocker now has the second most weeks at #1 in the just-over two year history of the SNS 100. It is actually gaining more momentum elsewhere. It’s also number one on the Adult Top 40 chart, and finally makes a big leap from #11 to #6 on the Billboard Hot 100. Pink performed the song this week on the new season of the Ellen DeGeneres show. Pink is a very versatile artist, but unfortunately she’s been pigeonholed for a long time in the pop category to make any rock inroads, but I could see this on alternative formats. If Ellie Goulding’s “Lights” could do a reverse crossover, then so certainly can Pink.
Elsewhere the big mover in the top echelon continues to be “Elizabeth’s Theme” by Dirty Beaches. Despite the calming nature of the song, it gives me a feeling of isolation, yet content. To me, it’s a real chill song. I posted the song on my wall for 9/11, of which the eleventh anniversary came this week. True, it’s not patriotic, but I invited friends to just listen to the song and to reflect on those loved ones who died that tragic day. I am thinking about doing a video for this in the near future, perhaps when I take a "chill day" at the beach. It’ll be an undertaking, as I’ve never constructed one before. It remains to be seen whether I can pull it off, but if I do, you’ll be the first to know.
Mumford & Sons is the big mover into the Top 20, but The Killers and The Features also enter the exclusive territory. Knocking on the door is “Default” by Django Django, the British psychedelic quartet. Brian Sniatkowski, who originally posted this song on my Music Page, just recently posted another song by them, “Hail Bop”. This band has a catchy, bouncy sound that just grabs hold of you. Good to know there’s another song in the pipeline from them.
Speaking of the Sniatkowski’s, it was Brian’s brother Mark who recommended the Satelliters “Lost In Time”, as I pointed out last week, the song has that classic garage sound, and it races from 55 to 25.
Let’s get down to the debuts, and there are two pretty strong ones, follow-ups to two of my favorites for the year. Leading the pack is the second single by Grace Potter and the Nocturnals from their current effort The Lion , the Beast, the Beat, called “Stars“. Much slower than what we‘ve come to expect from the Vermonters, Potter, who recently duetted with country star Kenny Chesney, had put a little country element into this one, but the rock guitars still come through. Should be another winner. By the way, this is the weekend that the band will host its annual music festival, Grand Point North up near Burlington (which is a bummer, since we’ll be up there in a couple of weeks; a little too late). Artists on the bill that are familiar to SNS fans include The Avett Brothers, Dr. Dog, and the Sam Roberts Band. Many others appear on the two day festival that started Friday the 14th and continues on Saturday.
Though it might be eclipsed by Pink’s latest in a couple of weeks, Those Darlins’ whose “Screws Get Loose” had a seven week run at #1 SNS and met favorable with my Facebook friends, is back with a new single, “Mystic Mind”, also from their Screws Get Loose album. This one has sort of a “Spirit in the Sky” beat to it. It rocks back and forth, the vocals a bit understated than the last song, but still one worthy of several listens. The trio just completed a tour with the Old 97’s..
Churchill is our last spotlighted debut this week, as “Change” enters at #77. The band hails from Boulder, Colorado, and has what sounds like a female lead singer. Definitely a poppish-rock sound and it infectious that after a few listens this will definitely get into your head. Check it out!
