The Latest Haunts (Music Review week of 10/31/2011)

Let me start off by apologizing for the delay this week in getting this out, and also by hoping that your power is back on.   We lost ours for 13 hours between Saturday night at 6:15 PM, and Sunday morning around 7:15 AM, which was lucky compared to others.     And still, the fourteen inches of snow in late October is pretty freaky in itself.

A pretty quiet week, with the notable exception of the new Black Keys single "Lonely Boy".  At first, I thought this was the new single from "Brothers", since there were officially only two (for those keeping score, this was "Tighten Up", which was my first #1 ever doing my blog, as well as my top song for 2010), and "Howling For You" (#2 earlier this year), plus two album cuts that I featured, "Next Girl", and "Everlasting Light".

The new single is from their forthcoming "El Camino" which drops on December 6.  If you're a Keys fan, you won't be disappointed in the new song.  It's an uptempo rocker in their inimitable style.  It heads the debuts at #57.  But you may have to wait to see the Akron duo perform the new songs, as they will be in Europe for the next several months.

Also entering are two other "name" acts:   Red Hot Chili Peppers with the second from I'm With You, "Monarch and Roses".  If you're disappointed in the previous single "The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie" (which hit #3 on SnS), you probably won't be too thrilled with the second single, set to a disco-ish beat.    Still, it's a catchy song and I like it, although the days of "Give It Away" are long gone.

The other one, and deservedly elevated to "name" status, is the new one by Foster the People, "Don't Stop".    As you know, "Pumped Up Kicks" was a huge classic, hitting my #1 and a national #3 hit.  Two subsequent follow-ups, "Houdini" and "Helena Beat" also hit my top 20.   This new single, also from Torches, is probably the catchiest and most "rocker-oriented" since the big hit.

AT THE TOP:  A pretty stagnant list this week as Dum Dum Girls "Coming Down" holds for a second week at #1, while the trio of Omnia, Mayer Hawthorne and Sarah Jean keep advancing.  Ellie Goulding and Florence + the Machine enter the top 20 with their latest efforts.

Rachel Allyn drops from #5 to #9 with her latest, "Lovely Lily", apparently breaking her string of #1 songs at three.    Still, it was a fave and missed the top spot only because of the competition.     However, the lack of an "official" video (like the previous "Say Hello to Goodbye") or any "events" (such as the Renegade "artist of the week" or the Thunder 106 "House band" contest winner) probably played a part as well.    But, Ms. Allyn is hardly going to "Stand Still"...a new single "Ain't No Fun", is reportedly a couple weeks away.     Rock on, Rachel!
