HUNTR/X, Jay Vons Maintain Hot 100, SNS Top Positions; Rhonda Top Debut (SNS week of 9/21/2025)

A quiet week here.  Not too much happening as we're still unpacking, ordering new furniture, and hoping for the day I can get out there, watch several of the bands I've been following for a while.  I was going to finally blog about the nominees for the annual Carolina Beach Music Awards, announced a while back, which will be presented in November....however, I can't link to the site, which isn't found!   Am I blocked from it, or is it just down?  That's a kick in the pants!!  So much for that.   I have computed my "Song of the Summer" listings but first will be preparing a video montage of the top 20 and hopefully will blog about that next week.

So I will move on to the Billboard Hot 100, which is more of the same, that is HUNTR/X's "Golden", now in its sixth week at the top, followed closely by Billboard's Song of the Summer this year, Alex Warren's "Ordinary" at #2.  Sabrina Carpenter's "Manchild" holds at #3, and Morgan Wallen featuring Tate McRae's "What I Want" at #4.  And Teddy Swims' "Lose Control" refuses to go away as it moves back into the top 10 in week 109.   And just so you know, "Die With a Smile" is still #11 in week 57, "A Bar Song" #15 in week 75, and "Beautiful Things" #16 in week 86.   Enough already!!! Contrast that with my SNS 100, where The Cure's "A Fragile Thing", down to #97 after reaching my top 10, at 29 weeks, is my oldest song on the list.

Turning to SNS, The Jay Vons' "My Mama (She Was Right)" holds at the top for a second week.   Inching up to #2 are The Tams, with "My True Love".   If it is able to move up to the top, it would be the fourth act that was established in the 1960's, in SNS history to hit the top.  The others?   Santana, The Beatles and The Rolling Stones.  The band first charted in 1962 with the #60 "Untie Me", with their biggest being 1964's "What Kind of Fool Do You Think I Am", #9 in 1964.

Steve Cheek's "Beach Walkin'", a former #1, moves to #3, while Arctic Monkeys' "505" going 10-4.  The Black Keys' "No Rain No Flowers", moving up again to #5.    The lone new entry in the top 10 is Role Model's "Sally When the Wine Runs Out", the current Triple-A #1 (16-10).

North Tower, which had the Top Debut two weeks ago, the Mover of the Week last week, now score the Impact Award with "Pretty Lady", a cover of a song by Canadian band Lighthouse from 1973, moving 27-12.

This week's Impact award (highest entry in the top 20) is North Tower's "Pretty Lady", 27-12 in only its third week.  Balu Brigada and Too Much Sylvia also enter the top 20.   Once again, we have a tie for Mover of the Week, the second time in three weeks.   MT Jones' "Why I Cry" (67-39) and Pepper Creek's "Carolina Tans" (80-46).

DEBUTS:  The top three debuts this week are all beach music songs by women.  Rhonda McDaniel follows up her blog #1 "Sad Girl" with "Little Black Dress", also from her dynamite album Reaching For the Top.  Several stations are playing different cuts, but I am going with "Little Black Dress".  The ever-versatile Ms. McDaniel has a tougher sound here, with a production that reminds me a bit of the Spencer Davis Group's, "I'm A Man', sort of.      Rhonda's voice has always been dynamite, and here she's a bit Tina Turner-esque.   This is an all-around tough song, and quite the tour-de-force.    Another winner for her.  It enters at #80.

Close behind is the blog debut for Jennifer James, "Carolina's Home".  It has the traditional bouncy beat for shagging, and of course it's about the Strand area.    It's because someone visiting the area, but who wants to stay.   "I'm calling this home", she sings.    Hmmm.....sounds like something I'm doing!   Ms. James is part of We Got the Beat Band, which I will have to find out more about.   But this up-tempo, good-timey song should do very well for her.  She enters at #83.

The third in the trio is "Thank You", by Monica D. Murphy.   I had been holding on to this one for a bit.  I'm not sure how long this has been out (there was a recent post in the "Women in Beach Music" page which was originally from January, but it's new to me).   It is from the Tribute to The General compilation, "The General" being General Johnson from the vintage group Chairmen of the Board.    Ms. Murphy shines with a very soulful outing.  This is vintage, classic beach music, and she does a wonderful job with it.  It debuts at #85.

A blast from the blog past as The Temper Trap, which had an early SNS hit with the #4 "Fader" back in 2010, returns with "Lucky Dimes".  This is an alt-rock tour de force, a lot going on here.  This is the band's first release in nine years; Its last time out, 2016's "Need Your Love" reached #55 that year.   Flock of Dimes, which is actually Jenn Wasner, debuts with "Long After Midnight".   Firmly in the singer-songwriter lane with a dash of country and alt-folk, she has a very pleasant voice.   The song is palatable enough to be a hit on my chart.   It enters at #94.

Another from the early years on my chart, Neko Case, returns with "Wreck".   This is another winner for her, with great instrumentation, and her voice is in rare form.  A bit more polished than prior efforts, it's a pleasure nonetheless to listen to her.    "Bad Luck" hit #1 for her back in 2018, this one has a chance to equal it.   A plea not to be afraid of her love, it enters in the #95 position.

Finally, we look to the top of the Indie charts to find a band called The Peppermint Kicks, with "Little Doll (Piccola Pupa)".    Indie rock heaven with a nice, raw, sound combining 90's alt rock with 60's garage.    These guys do rock.
