A little late this week (actually I started this several days ago but haven't finished it until today). Nothing really good to talk about this week, so I'm going to get right into the charts and stuff.
HOT 100: Kendrick Lamar is still talk of the top 10 as he still has three songs in the top 4, and "Luther", which features SZA, is number one for a third week. At this point in time, it seems like I have to add one of these songs, and "Luther" enters the Tremors section of my chart, which serves as a "bubbling under" of sorts. My friend Lorrie Sanchez had sent me the song and I listened to it, and it's a nice, smooth easy-going slice of hip-hop, a bit jazzy. She mentioned that she, like me, was disappointed in this year's Super Bowl halftime show, but this song, she really likes. She also admits that she didn't know who he was before that, but kudos to her for checking these out and recommending "Luther".
Except for Lamar's arch-enemy Drake, moving 11-10 with "Nokia", every song on the Billboard chart has been there 15 weeks or more, and the top 9 hold positions. "Die With a Smile" is still #2, "A Bar Song" still #5, "Birds of a Feather", #7, and "Lose Control", #9,, now in its 81st week, ten weeks away from tying Glass Animals' "Heat Waves". I may bite the bullet and re-add the Teddy Swims song, but will still emphasize his current single, "Guilty" which debuts here at #76, but of course, is nowhere to be found on the Hot 100.
SNS 100: Turning to my chart, the competition is really shaping up and taking hold. Thee Sacred Souls' "My Heart is Drowning" still leads the pack, for a third week, but it is being chased by Tennis' "Weight of Desire" at #2, My Morning Jacket's "Time Wasted" at #3, Orbis Max's "Follow" moving 5-4. Positions six through 9 are busy as well, with Moon Soul's "Love Again" (10-6), Starbuck's "Beach Radio" (14-7), The Six Piece Suits' "Lovers Into Strangers" (12-8), and the Mover of the Week, The Black Keys' "The Night Before" leaping 24 to 9. Sylvia Johns Ritchie's "My Heart Knows You By Heart" is the other new entry into the top 20 (21-14).
The Mover of the Week is last week's Top Debut, Billie Eilish's "Wildflower". Almost Monday's "Can't Slow Down" also moves big, from 46 to 31.

Singer-songwriter Michael Nau , who also fronts Cotton Jones, has the Top Debut with the solo effort "No Quit" |
DEBUTS: Michael Nau has the Top Debut this week with "No Quit", debuting at a lofty #34. So, how did this bone-chilling song come to me? Seems that another song of his, "Love Survive" was featuring on the first episode of the new Kate Hudson Netflix series, Running Point. That song, from 2016 (with a reworked version in 2023), was added to my "up and coming" playlist on Spotify, which was awesome enough, but as per usual, the streaming service will recommend other songs by the same artist. When "No Quit" came on, I was blown away. It has sort of a Richard Swift vibe, with cool, psychedelic overtones. But what really sold me was the repeating bass riff, which sounds so much like "Crystal Blue Persuasion" by Tommy James and the Shondells, which persists over the entire song. That same vibe was also present on Don West's recent blog #1 "Small Change", currently at #17.
The song came out in 2019, and Nau has released several singles since then, which I will soon explore. Nau is also a member of the band Cotton Jones, formed in Maryland in 2008 and still active, although that band hasn't released anything since 2012; Nau has released five albums since then, most recently 2023's Accompany.
What might stop "No Quit" from reaching the top, however, aside from the competition, is that the first time I heard the song, I replayed it twelve times and thus is in danger of burnout. So, I will monitor this song over the next several weeks.
You have to go all the way down to #74 to get the second highest debut, Phantogram's "Come Alive". This one is a psychedelic/dream pop complete with electronica overtones. This is the Greenwich duo's best in a long time and should top their recent "Happy Again".
As I mentioned above, while the world is still fixated on "Lose Control", I go for the latest from Teddy Swims, "Guilty". It's another pop-soul confection, and he sings with a lot of heart. Next is yet another song from a TV soundtrack, this one being "Liberty" by Ashley Clark, which was featured in season four of Sweet Magnolias. Another feel-good song here--pop with a dash of funk, which also was released in 2019 (how is it that I kept missing these great songs when they came out?), but as they say, it's new to me.
Next is "Any Day Now" by Canadian singer-songwriter Ruth Morayniss. You may know her by her stage name Ruth E. Music who has guested on a couple of Einsteins Dad songs, including the current "Black Doves"; however, she is using her real name on her Spotify page; thus, am billing her as such. This one was released a little before the Einsteins Dad track, but it's nonetheless compelling. A great concoction in the indie-folk spectrum. I love her voice.
Morgan Wallen follows the blog top 10 of "Love Somebody" with "You're the Problem". No it's not an "answer record" to Michael Kiwanuka's 2020 blog-topper, "You Ain't the Problem", but another pop-slanted country tune, a perfect complement to his prior release. The song hit #2 on the Hot 100 a few weeks ago before falling back, but it's still in the top 20 nationally.
Lucius returns with "Gold Rush". This band has had many styles over the years and has been featured on many other artists' songs. This one is a rather stripped-down but still with much instrumentation, and rather haunting at times. This one has a shot.
And finally, we've come full circle of sorts. I mentioned how the debuting Michael Nau song "No Quit" has a bass line that resembles Tommy James & the Shondells' "Crystal Blue Persuasion". Well, we have Tommy James debuting this week with "Where Did Our Love Go". This is, yes, a remake of the Supremes' #1 song from 1964, and has been remade by everyone from Donnie Elbert to The J. Geils Band, to most recently, Kid Rock, who had a beach music hit with it in 2019. James, aside from performing with his current group of Shondells, still records; his 2019 album yielded a top 10 blog hit with an acoustic version of his 1967 Shondells hit, "I Think We're Alone Now", a slowed-down reworking of that smash. He pretty much does the same thing here: A choir info sets the stage for this rather understated version, and sort of makes it his own. Much different from prior versions of the song, but James has never balked at trying anything new.
Unfortunately, last week, Tommy, while performing suffered from exhaustion and had to end his show early, then was out of commission for several days. He is 78 years old and is still very active, but fans of Tommy will remember that back in 1970, he had collapsed on stage, pronounced dead, and then decided to "retire" on a farm in upstate New York, putting an end to the Shondells (the other members continued for a while as Hog Heaven). But we are glad to report that Tommy, after resting, is doing well and performing again, having just done a concert in Tulsa on March 15.
Two songs enter the Tremors chart this week: Niko Moon's "Dance With Me", as well as the current #1 song in the country, Kendrick Lamar's "Luther", featuring SZA.
BENDER GOING OFF?: This week, "Bender Coming On", by Whiskey-Chitto Ramblers moves 87 to 69 in its second week on the chart. However, it could be its last. Seems that all traces of this song, its album, the song's video, as well as frontman Seth Storer's solo single "Hungover You", (which drops off the chart this week from #97), and the band's prior single, "Breakdown" (currently at #47, after peaking at #10) have all but disappeared from Spotify, iTunes, Amazon and YouTube. While it's not uncommon for artists to pull songs for various reasons, this seems sudden, especially for an emerging artist. A requirement for charting on SNS is that a song must be available in some configuration to be included. The band had contemplating changing its name early in the year, but there haven't been any updated posts on either the band's or Seth's Facebook page. If I get more information, I will pass that on.
