Top 100 of 2024: Deb "Three-peats"; Marlisa, Charlotte, Shaboozey also lead tally; Mariah Sweeps Holiday Season (SNS Week of 12/28/2024)

Another year over, another award for Deb Browning as her duet with Marlisa Kay Small, "Sunshine and Summertime" trounced over the competition to land the #1 song of the year on my Scenes 'n' Soundwaves Top 100 of 2024 listing.

It marks the third straight year that Deb has had the number one song on Scenes 'n' Soundwaves, following "3 More Minutes" in 2022 and "Think I Found Forever" last year.    She becomes the first artist to land the top song three years in a row and ties The Beatles for most year-end number one's.   The Fab Four accomplished this in 1964 with "She Loves You", in '65 with "Help", and 1968 with "Hey Jude".

The song, a cover of Faith Hill's 2006 hit, was the first that Deb had recorded with Marlisa, who has been her singing partner at gigs in the Grand Strand area for a couple of years now.    It's Marlisa's second top 10  year-end entry; last year she teamed up with Jerry West for another cover, "Love Really Hurts Without You", a hit for Billy Ocean in 1976.

As the end of this year marks the halfway point of the 2020's, all of the number one songs on my year-end charts this decade are regional acts...but actually it's only two.    ScreenAge, which included current Colorjoy members Emily MacMahon and Sam Novotny, topped the 2020 and 2021 lists with "Blue Eyed Addiction" and "Think Again".    They hailed from central New Jersey, while Deb and Marlisa, of course, are based in the North Myrtle Beach area of South Carolina.   You have to go back to 2019 to find my number one song on the weekly Billboard chart ("I've Been Waiting", Lil Peep, ILoveMakonnen featuring Fall Out Boy),  and 2017 to find one that also hit number one on Billboard ("Shape of You" by Ed Sheeran).

"Sunshine and Summertime" was released in the spring of this year, but many were calling it the "song of the summer", which it officially wound up being on my summer tally.    The song landed in the top five on many beach music year-end charts as well.

Both Deb and Marlisa each added a second song on the list.   Ms. Browning's cover of "Put Your Hand in the Hand", a #2 hit for Ocean in 1971, landed at #14, while Marlisa's "No Matter Where You Go" came in at #82.

Charlotte Sessions, an aspiring singer-songwriter from my hometown of Roselle Park, NJ landed the runner-up position with "I've Fallen For A Dragon".     Charlotte was the only artist to place two songs at #1 during the year.  "Dragon" spent four weeks at #1 in March.   That followed "Should I Be the Man?" which led off the year with two weeks at the top.   "Should..." came in at #73 as it straddled both 2023 and 2024.   That song was one of two songs from 2023 list that made this year's chart as well, the other being "I See Red" by Everybody Loves An Outlaw.

Shaboozey, a relatively new country artist, was at #3 with "A Bar Song (Tipsy)".   The song was a monster national hit, hitting #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for a 19-week (so far) run.  "A Bar Song" had a three-week run here.   Neo-soul artist Jalen Ngonda and Canadian female indie-pop quartet The Beaches rounded out the top five.

Teddy Swims' "Lose Control", which was Billboard's #1 song of 2024, came in at #17.   It's the highest a Hot 100 number one song placed on the SNS year-end tally since the aforementioned "Shape of You" in 2017, when it hit the top on both lists.

Starbuck and The Black Keys tied for the most songs on the chart, with 4.   Swims, Anna Lavigne, Juliet Callahan, and Orbis Max placed three songs each.   Ms. Callahan's output included "Burning Up", which was a remix of her 2022 blog hit, "Burning" which hit that year's top twenty.    Orbis' included duets with Tim Izzard and Lindsay Murray.    Izzard's project Sir Prize and the Twomorrow Knightz also scored on the list.    Mike Taylor also had three entries, one solo, one in a duet with Karen Clayton, and one as part of The Holiday Band.

Beach music artist Sylvia Johns Ritchie, who has the number six song with "Good Love Don't Come Easy", was also involved with two other songs on the list, writing "Knocking Down Doors" for Marsha Morgan, and "Feels Like Love To Me", for Doyle Wood and Terri Gore.

Artists with two songs on the list, aside from Browning, Sessions, Small and Ngonda, include Pip Millett (including one where she was featured with Gotts Street Park), Cage The Elephant, Billie Eilish, Sabrina Carpenter, Royel Otis, Thee Sacred Souls, and Suki Waterhouse.  You can also include Italian drummer Daniele Silvestri, who drummed on songs by both Internet collectives, Orbis Max and Einsteins Dad.

As for all genres, Carolina beach music led the way for the third straight year.   While it once again had the number one song (thanks, again, to Deb Browning), and over a quarter entries out of the top 100 (more, if you count pop crossover artists like Hozier and Sabrina Carpenter which topped John Hook's Beach Music Top 40 chart).   However, only three songs topped the chart, compared to 8 in 2023 and 7 in 2022.    Sylvia Johns Ritchie's' "Good Love Don't Come Easy" and Starbuck's "Spring Break Shake" also hit the top.

While pop artists have routinely made my list, the representation was much stronger this year.    As I've blogged about recently, the same songs occupied the Hot 100's top 10 for weeks on end with little movement.    While that is of concern, the songs that did that stay there were, for the most part, very good.   Pop artists like Sabrina Carpenter, Billie Eilish, Shaboozey, Benson Boone, SZA, Teddy Swims, and the duet of Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars did very well, in most cases, reaching my top five, with Shaboozey and Swims hitting the top.   Hozier achieved a rare grand slam of sorts:  Not only did "Too Sweet" top both the Hot 100 and the SNS 100, it also reached #1 on the alternative airplay chart and John Hook's Beach Music Top 40 listing.

New Jersey artists, as they've done every year, were represented as well.    Bon Jovi, of course, has been around for decades, and Jon and the gang returned to the chart this year, but aspiring female artists such as Charlotte Sessions, Dani Zanoni, Nikki Briar, and C. Lynne Smith also landed songs on the chart.   And you don't have to start out as a singer to achieve success:  Actresses such as Suki Waterhouse and Kate Hudson made the list.

Neo-Soul continued to make inroads, not only on my chart, but the Triple-A listing of Billboard as well.   Aside from Jalen Ngonda, acts such as Michael Kiwanuka, Thee Sacred Souls, Pip Millett, and even The Black Keys, landed on the list.   For the Keys, it was a cover of William Bell's 1968 R&B hit "I Forgot to Be Your Lover".

Alternative music, while still represented by not only the Keys, but Cage the Elephant, took a back seat to more indie music.  The Beaches, Vacations, Varsity, The Pozers, and Public, scored.    Travis made the list for the first time in about 20 years as well.

Were there any disappointments?   A few.    Missing from the list were two of the hottest artists in 2024.  Taylor Swift, despite being named Artist of the Year by Billboard, and whose latest album resulted in a sweep of the top 14 positions on the Hot 100, missed my year-end chart.   Morgan Wallen, who had two national #1 hits, including his duet "I Had Some Help" by Post Malone which was Bilboard's "Song of the Summer", was also shut out.

Last year's two hottest new entries, Say She She and Colorjoy, which combined for 11 entries last year, only managed one this year: the latter's "Cigarettes and Vanilla", which set a record for most top tens (7) on Colorjoy's Golden Age set.      But neither group released any new significant new music, spending the year mostly touring or concentrating on gigs.    Say She She did release a couple of songs, including a Taking Heads cover of "Slippery People", but to little promotion.

Here is the Top 100 in video montage form that I posted on YouTube.  Scroll down to the bottom for the actual listing.

HOT 100 NEWS:  I promised to keep you updated on the holiday activity on the Hot 100.   The final chart of the season dated January 4, 2024.  And Mariah Carey completes a sweep of the Christmas season as "All I Want For Christmas Is You' logs a 4th week at #1.   That ties  2022 for the most weeks Mariah has held the top spot.      It's just part of a history-making Hot 100 this week.

There was some concern last year, when Brenda Lee's "Rocking Around the Christmas Tree" beat out "All...." three weeks to two, but Mariah came back strong this year to complete the sweep.   In addition, "All I Want for Christmas Is You" has now logged 18 total weeks at the top, just one off the record of 19 set by Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus' "Old Town Road" and tied just last month by Shaboozey's "A Bar Song (Tipsy)".    As it is expected that all of the holiday entries will drop off next week, it's a good bet that Mariah Carey will break the record next year--unless Shaboozey isn't done yet (see below).

For the first time in history, holiday songs have swept the entire top ten.   In fact, they comprise the top sixteen, and 23 of the top 25 on the Hot 100.    Brenda Lee is again relegated to the runner-up spot, but as Wham's "Last Christmas" wins the third spot, beating out Bobby Helms' "Jingle Bell Rock", three of the four weeks.

Another big surprise is that Ariana Grande's 2014 song, "Santa Tell Me", which entered the top 10 for the first time, jumps from 9 to 5, displacing the usual "A Holly Jolly Christmas" by Burl Ives, moving that down to #6.    Perennials Andy Williams' "It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year" drops to #7, Dean Martin's "Let It Snow" to #8.    Kelly Clarkson's "Underneath the Tree", like "Santa Tell Me", new to the top 10 last week, advances to #9, and Nat King Cole's "The Christmas Song" rounds out the top 10.

Only two non-holiday songs are in the top 25:   Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars' "Die With a Smile", the lone holdout last week at #6, drops to #17, and none other than Shaboozey's "A Bar Song" at #24, which managed to get past the two Kendrick Lamar songs it trailed the last few weeks.    With all of the holiday entries due to exit next week, that sets up a showdown between Gaga & Mars, and Shaboozey.  Will "Die With a Smile", the current #1 on SNS, finally achieve the top spot on the Hot 100?  Or will Shaboozey prevail, which would break the record with his 20th week for "A Bar Song"?

We shall see.

For my readers, a big thank you for your support this past year.   Have a safe, happy and healthy 2025!
