BOTH TEDDY SWIMS and Taylor Swift were the news this week as Billboard unveiled its year-end awards, as televised on December 12. "Lose Control" was the number one song of the year, according to Billboard. While the song only spent a week at #1, it had amassed enough points during the whole year to grab year-end honors. The song had hit the charts in late 2023, hit the top in March and hung on the entire year in the top ten to grab the honor.
Teddy Swims' "Lose Control" was named Top Song of 2024 on Billboard's year-end tally. |
Shaboozey's "A Bar Song (Tipsy)" despite racking up 19 weeks at the top, tying a record, had to settle for #2, the same position it had during Billboard's "Song of the Summer" tally. Two factors kept it from being number one for the year: The song didn't chart until late spring, thus found itself five months of points less than "Lose Control". Also, Billboard's "cut-off" point was a bit earlier than in previous years, being in mid-November rather than the end of it. It no doubt would have been a closer race had it included points right up to the current week. Similar to the Song of the Summer, which went to Post Malone featuring Morgan Wallen's "I Had Some Help", despite one less week at #1 than "A Bar Song" (five versus six at the time), the cutoff point cinched it for "Help".
Both "Lose Control" and "A Bar Song" hit number one on the SNS 100: Swims' song topped my chart for three weeks, as did "A Bar Song". Hozier's "Too Sweet", #10 on the Billboard year-end chart, also topped SNS; the three dual chart toppers were the most in recent memory.
Benson Boone's "Beautiful Things" was the #3 song on Billboard; the song reached #12 here but was one of those songs that stayed in Billboard's upper echelon much of the year. The aforementioned Song of the Summer, "I Had Some Help" came in at #4, while Jack Harlow's "Lovin' on Me" rounded out the top five.
The Hot 100 is made up of three main components: Radio airplay, streaming, and sales (usually downloads). Radio accounted for "Lose Control"'s success, as it was also #1 on that component. "A Bar Song" was #1 on the downloads component. Streaming honors went to Zach Bryan and Kacey Musgraves' "I Remember Everything", which landed in the #9 year-end position.
While Taylor Swift's years-end best was only at #12, "Cruel Summer", which spent much time on the chart last year but held on this year as well), she placed eight total songs on the year-end list, enabling her to take home the Top Artist Award. Ms. Swift made history in May when her new album The Tortured Poets Department resulted in a sweep of the Top 14 positions of the Hot 100. She had won a similar award as "Artist of the Year" at the recent iHeart Radio music awards as well.
Among the other Billboard awards announced included Chappell Roan as New Artist, and Morgan Wallen as Top Male Artist. Taylor Swift, aside from Hot 100 artist, also took Female Artist, Top Songwriter, Global Artist, Streaming Songs artist, and Radio Songs Artist, as well as the Billboard 200 (Albums) Top Artist. Shaboozey copped the Sales (downloads) Top Artist.
Among other artists who appeared on my SNS 100, include SZA (Top R&B artist), Doja Cat (Top Female Rap Artist), Wallen for Top Country Artist, Beyonce for Female Artist. Post Malone and Morgan Wallen got Top Collaboration. Zach Bryan nabbed both Rock artist and country album; Linkin Park got best Rock duo/group.

MEANWHILE, On the Billboard Hot 100, Mariah Carey again takes Round 2 of the holiday season sweepstakes, earning a second straight top ranking and week number 16 overall. That puts her in a four-way tie for third place, with, among others, "One Sweet Day" that she recorded with Boyz II Men in 1995. It's also three behind the leaders Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus, and Shaboozey, each with 19 weeks for "Old Town Road", and "A Bar Song (Tipsy)", respectively. It looks like Brenda Lee's bridesmaid status is back for 2024, as "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree" remains at #2. After "Last Christmas" by Wham! moved to #3 ahead of Bobby Helms' "Jingle Bell Rock" last week, the latter moves back at #3 pushing "Last Christmas" back to the 4th slot. "A Holly Jolly Christmas" by Burl Ives round out the all-holiday top five---the exact same order and songs much of last season. It seems like the holiday season, like the rest of the year, the chart is so stagnant with the same songs listed week after week. Maybe it's time Billboard changed their method of ranking the songs?
Looking at the second half of the top 10, it looks like Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars have finally come out of the shadow of Shaboozey, as "Die With A Smile" advances to #6, while "A Bar Song" drops all the way to #9. Three of the Kendrick Lamar songs still rank 7, 8, and 10. While this coming during the holiday season prevents the duo from hitting #1, it does improve their chances once the holidays end and could prevent Shaboozey from breaking the record. Then again, next holiday season, the new record will probably go to Mariah anyway.
SNS 100: What Gaga and Bruno couldn't yet do on the Hot 100, they have done here, as"Die With a Smile" lands a fourth week on the blog chart. Teddy Swims inches up to #2 with "Bad Dreams". The Beaches "Takes One To Know One" drops to #3, while Deb Browning's holiday entry "Christmas in the South" moves 8-4. With one week to go, the questions are: will "Die" hit a 5th week? Will Deb get her second holiday #1, following "Here Comes Amazon" two years ago, and be only the second artist to claim a second number one this year? Or will Swims lay claim to that feat of two blog chart-toppers in 2024, following Charlotte Sessions earlier this year?
A second holiday entry has entered the top 20. Melinda Lindner's "Come on a Sleighride" jumps 30-11 to nab the Impact award. Thomas Rhett & Teddy Swims' "Somethin' 'Bout a Woman" (23-14), and Don West's "Small Change" also enter the top 20.
Sylvia Johns Ritchie's holiday album, "Merry Christmas to You From Us" is released this week, which includes Sylvia's song with Rivermist, "Old Fashioned Down Home Christmas" |
The Mover of the Week is also a Christmas entry: Sylvia Johns Ritchie and Rivermist's "Down Home Old Fashioned Christmas" moving from 60 to 34. The song, written by Sylvia and James Beauhall is one of the tracks on Sylvia's just-released holiday album, Merry Christmas To You From Us. Sylvia wrote or co-wrote all of the tracks on the album, except for the final song, "O Holy Night". While Rivermist sings with Ms. Ritchie on "Down Home", much of the album includes artists such as Laurie Kelly on "Hallelujah Amen", and several by Amanda Hunter Clawges (including "O Holy Night". Sylvia herself solos on "Christmas On the Bayou" and "Miracle of Christmas".
ADDS: Four new songs this week as I usually wind down the year (next month there will be plenty of new adds, don't worry). The Top Debut goes to Vacations, following up the top 25 "Midwest" with "Over You", a nice, sweet, dreamy slice of pop-oriented alternative that should match the prior song. Menehan Street Band's "Queens Highway" is a short (1:07) piece of jazzy, bluesy instrumental, but it should whet appetites for more cool sounds.
Two more holiday songs debut: Laufey, already on the chart with "Santa Baby", is joined by "Christmas Magic", which is more original than that remake, a cool lullaby-type song that's perfect for the season; the song hit the Hot 100 last week, and is featured in the holiday movie Red One. The other is by beach music artist, Lesa Hudson, with her new holiday song, "I've Got the Joy". It's a bouncy, up-tempo gospel-influenced tour de force.
