THIS WEEK ON THE BILLBOARD HOT 100, Shaboozey holds off a serious challenge from Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars' "Die With a Smile", as "A Bar Song (Tipsy)" logs its 19th week atop the big chart. This ties a record set by Lil Nas X featuring Billy Ray Cyrus' "Old Town Road" which originally set the record over five years ago.
There was speculation this past week that Gaga and Mars would knock Shaboozey out of the top spot, but the country song prevailed yet again. With the exception of four weeks ago, when Morgan Wallen's "Love Somebody" debuted at the top spot, and Kendrick Lamar's "Not Like Us" did the same back in July, "A Bar Song" has stuck to the number one spot. "Die With a Smile" holds at #2, and yet again, the top 10 remains the same with the exception of Teddy Swims' "Lose Control", and Sabrina Carpenter's "Espresso" switching positions 4 and 5.
That stagnation will change soon, as the queen pins of the holiday season, Mariah Carey's "All I Want For Christmas Is You", and Brenda Lee's "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree" make their re-entries at #16 and #23, respectively. Wham!'s "Last Christmas" moves 38-24, and much of the other holiday regulars re-debut in the 40's.
So, what happens next week? I had maintained a few weeks back that this week's chart, dated November 30 will be the last one before the holiday entries take over for the next five weeks. But not so fast! Last year at this time, Mariah and Brenda were at #4 and #8, respectively, with Ms. Lee jumping to the top the next week. While it indeed is possible that one of them can leap to the top, remember that Thanksgiving is a week late this year, thus the "official" holiday season is five days shorter. And while many radio stations started their Christmas programming as early as November 1, some of them start right after Thanksgiving as well.
So, can Shaboozey break the record next week? While Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars closed the gap a bit this week, the next chart will reflect activity in the wake of the Country Music Association (CMA) awards that were held on November 20. The December 7 chart would reflect activity between November 22 and 28....Thanksgiving Day. As Shaboozey performed his hit song at the awards, I am going to go out on a limb and say that he will break the record next week, holding off Mariah Carey or Brenda Lee. If "A Bar Song" gets week #20 next week, it would also squash Mariah's chances of equaling the record, as the most weeks she could then log at the top would be four. That would put her at only 18 weeks if she ran the table. If "All I Want For Christmas Is You" DOES make it to the top of the chart next week, then there conceivably can be a three-way tie for the most weeks at the top--at least before the holiday entries exit and until January, where Shaboozey could then set the record. As for Brenda's chances--she beat out Mariah last year, 3 weeks to two, thanks to making appearances during the holiday season, as well as making a video for her song, it appears that Mariah may have taken back the upper hand.
We can only wait until next week to see how this all plays out.
MOVING TO THE SNS 100, Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars' "Die With a Smile" DOES succeed in knocking out "A Bar Song' after the latter three-week, non-consecutive run. Shaboozey drops to #2, while The Beaches' former number one "Takes One to Know One" holds at #3; Pip Millett's "Hard Life" at #4. Starbuck's "Jones About You" moves back up to #5 as it also holds that designation on Don Mark's Surfside chart. Movers inside and into the top ten include Teddy Swims' "Bad Dreams" (9-6), beach duo Doyle Wood and Terri Gore's "Feels Like Love to Me" (10-7) and Orbis Max' "We Shall Rise Again" (14-10).
In the second ten, three beach music songs move up: Multi-CAMMY winner Gary Lowder and Smokin' Hot's "Driving Me Out of Her Mind" (17-13), Mighty Saints of Soul's "You Don't Know What Love Is" (20-16), and Rivermist's "Jukebox Jenny" (24-18). Grabbing Impact honors is Arc De Soliel's instrumental "Trying to Escape" (21-14), and also entering is The Heavy Heavy's "Feel" (29-19).
Last week's Top Debut is this week's Mover, Moto Bandit's "Private Pile" (56-34). Deb Browning's "Christmas in the South" continues to lead the Christmas entries, moving 33-23, as the video for the song was introduced this week at Captain Archie's club, and Deb was also interviewed on DJ Eric Bowman's show on Fun One Radio.
DEBUTS: A lot of debuts this week, eleven of them. TOP DEBUT goes to "Somethin' 'Bout a Woman" by Thomas Rhett featuring Teddy Swims, at #60. The duo performed the song at the CMA's last week. Swims has to be the hottest act in 2024; he has had a #1 and two other top tens on my chart this year, and his "Lose Control" has been in the Billboard Hot 100 top ten most of the year and logging 67 total weeks there. As for Rhett, he has had two blog top ten's, "Crash and Burn", #6 in 2015, and "Star of the Show", #5 in 2017. This is the same duo that won the CAMMY for National Shag song with "Broke". That song here peaked at #64 in 2022, thus the new song has already exceeded that peak. It's an equal, emotional dose of country and soul. Rhett has always had pop sensibility; combined with Swims' soulfulness, this is a winner through and through.
Also entering is "Ghost", by The Palms, reminiscent of the band #1 blog hit "Push Off"; Blake Shelton's new one is "Texas", another very tuneful song; his best in a while, and could equal his top ten "Nobody". The Lone Star state has been good to him, remembering his 2001 debut, "Austin". This one has references to George Strait and his "All My Ex's Live in Texas" smash. Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats enter with "Call Me (Whenever You Like)", their most "lively" song in some time; The Pozers follow their #11 "Missing You (Missing Me)", with the worthy "And You Love". It retains some of their Brit invasion sensibility of the prior song with a hint of early 70's glam, and you can throw in vintage Raspberries and Badfinger in there too. Awesome harmonies as with the prior song.
Speaking of neo-glam, Sir Prize and the Twomorrow Knights, the project by Tim Izzard and Gregory Dobbins, slow it down a bit with "Temptress", the follow-up to "Glitter Balls"; Izzard stays within the confines of that fictional band but delivers an emotional vocal at that. Lady Gaga follows up "Die With A Smile" with "Disease", kind of a throwback to her pop beginnings, but different enough to make an impact. Finally, Dexter and the Moon Rocks are near the top of the alternative chart with "Sad in Carolina". Don't let the title fool you; this is pure unadulterated alternative rock.
In addition, three holiday songs enter: They are led by Melinda Lindner's 'Come on a Sleighride", which sort of has a surf-pop (think Beach Boys or Jan and Dean) sound, think California; Meghan Trainor's take on "Jingle Bells", introduced last year but getting airplay and streams this season; and Jimmy Fallon, who did a duet with Ms. Trainor last year, returns this time with Jonas Brothers on "Holiday".
HAVE A HAPPY THANKSGIVING!
