LAST WEEK, while I was writing my blog, the annual nominations for the 2024 Carolina Beach Music Awards (CBMA), or "Cammys" were announced, and the beach community were busy congratulating one another. I promised I would go over the pertinent awards, so here they are:
FEMALE VOCALIST
Deb Browning
Karen Clayton (Castaways)
Laura Kepley (The Tonez)
Lesa Hudson (Rick Strickland Band)
Rhonda McDaniel (Carolina Coast Band)
Angela Resignalo (The Catalinas)
Most of these artists should be familiar to SNS readers, with the possible exception of Angela Resignalo, who fronts the longtime beach band The Catalinas, but that band made the SNS 100 in 2021 with its cover of the Patti Drew/5th Dimension gem "Working On A Groovy Thing". However, the others have had blog hits more recently, including of course, last year's winner, Deb Browning. While the others front bands, they also record solo, and all of the others have made my top 20 this year. While all these nominees are awesome, I feel that Marlisa Kay Small and Sharon Woodruff should have been included.
MALE VOCALIST
Chuck French (Band of Oz)
Gary Lowder (Gary Lowder & Smokin’ Hot)
Dustin Ahkuoi (Band of Oz)
Jim Quick (Jim Quick & Coastline)
Rick Strickland (Rick Strickland Band)
Steve Long (Too Much Sylvia)
While many of these vocalists are less well-known (at least, to me), the bands they belong to most certainly are. But Rick Strickland has scored many times fronting his band; ditto for Gary Lowder. Too Much Sylvia has hit here before, as has Jim Quick who also doubles as a deejay in the area. As for the two Band of Oz vocalists, Dustin Ahkuoi has scored with a duet with Sharon Woodruff. Steve Long won this category last year. A personal pick here would have been Gary Alexander, who scored top 3 here with "There's Always Beach Music", but alas was nominated.
RISING STAR:
Autumn Tyde
Bridger Warlick (Gary Lowder & Smokin’ Hot)
Evan Wright (The Pink Slips)
Pepper Creek Band
Steve Cheek
Deb Browning won this award two years ago, and Rivermist got the nod in 2023. While I've heard of Autumn Tyde (although not yet adding a song of theirs), and I hadn't heard of the Pepper Creek Band (something to check out in the future), the other three have hit my top 20. My personal pick here would be Steve Cheek, although Bridger and Evan deserve much merit as well. Maybe The Mac Daddy's Band should also be on this list.
ENTERTAINER:
Craig Woolard w/ Embers feat. Craig Woolard
Dustin Ahkuoi w/ Band of Oz
Gary Lowder w/ Gary Lowder & Smokin’ Hot
Jim Quick w/ Jim Quick & Coastline
Karen Clayton w/ The Castaways
Lesa Hudson w/ Rick Strickland Band
Laura Kepley w/ The Tonez
A lot of legendary bands here like the Embers, Band of Oz, and The Castaways, but every vocalist here is worthy. I think Craig Woolard is the only one who hasn't scored (yet) on SNS, but everyone else her has had their presence felt with me. Again, I would have also added Sharon Woodruff with The Main Event Band, and Rhonda McDaniel from The Carolina Coast Band.
SMOOTHIE
"Count On Me" Lesa Hudson (#3)
“Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me” The Castaways ft Karen C. & Brady H. (#25)
"Dreamcicle" Rev Bubba Deliverance (#12)
“I Believe In You And Me" The Pink Slips ft Evan Wright
“I'll Be Loving You Always” Gary Lowder & Smokin' Hot(#90)
This apparently is a kind an award for a mid-tempo song or ballad. Four of these songs made my chart (and I've inserted their peak position after each entry), and the one that didn't, based on their summer entry "Dance", warrants inclusion as well. Based on chart position, my award goes to "Count on Me", but any of the others are good as well.
SONG OF THE YEAR:
"Another Day” Too Much Sylvia (#52)
“Better” Rhonda McDaniel (#14)
“Everythings Changed” Rivermist (#5)
" Joined At The Heart" Rick Strickland (#5)
“Sunshine & Summertime” Deb Browning & Marlisa Kay Small (#1)
“Wildfire” Gary Lowder & Smokin' Hot ft Joe Morris (#25)
All the songs in this category have charted on my blog, (and again, its peak is listed here). First of all, where is "Good Love Don't Come Easy" by Sylvia Johns Ritchie? That certainly belongs, but having said that, it would be a crime if "Sunshine & Summertime" doesn't win. Six weeks at the top says a lot. If not the Dynamic Duo, then Rivermist should get it.
"Dance With Me" Niko Moon
"Fires Don't Start Themselves" Darius Rucker
“ Just One More” California Honeydrops
“Top Down” Nadia Shutkufski
Well, only one of these songs has charted here, that being Nadia Shutkufski's "Top Down" which made my top 20, so that's my pick. But where's Starbuck? If not "Beach A Go Go", then at least "Spring Break Shake".
ALBUM OF THE YEAR:
“All I Want For Christmas” The Embers ft Craig Woolard
“Burning It Up for Your Love” Sylvia Johns Ritchie”Give Me Gospel” Deb Browning
”In The Moment” Gary Lowder & Smokin’ Hot
”Power of Two” Rick Strickland & Lesa Hudson
" Whole Lotta Susan" Susan Trexler
GROUP OF THE YEAR:
Band of Oz
Embers ft. Craig Woolard
Gary Lowder & Smokin' Hot
Jim Quick & Coastline
Rick Strickland Band
Too Much Sylvia
All good entries, but where is Rivermist? Or the Pink Slips Band? My pick here would be Rick Strickland's outfit.
COLLABORATION OR DUO
“Going Down Swinging” Mike Taylor & Sylvia Johns Ritchie (#23)
“I'm Your Puppet” Mike Taylor & Karen Clayton (#6)
“Lonely Side Of Town’” Blackwater Band ft Angela King
“Someday At Christmas” Craig Woolard & Jackie Gore
“Sunshine & Summertime” Deb Browning & Marlisa Kay Small (#1)
“Wildfire” Gary Lowder & Smokin' Hot ft. Joe Morris (#25)
Four of the six charted here (and its peak is noted). While my gut reaction is that of another award for the "Dynamic Duo" (Deb and Marlisa), the two Mike Taylor entries are very much worth it as well; when you work with two awesome women, it adds so much.
MUSIC VIDEO:
“Another Day” Too Much Sylvia
“God Winked” Doyle Wood
“It's Over” Gary Lowder & Smokin' Hot
“Someday At Christmas” Craig Woolard & Jackie Gore
”Wildfire” Gary Lowder & Smokin' Hot ft. Joe Morris
"Hustlin" Jim Quick & Coastline
The final category I'm spotlighting; I believe Rivermist won this last year. To be honest, I really haven't seen these, so your guess is as good as mine.
The 2024 Carolina Beach Music awards will take place in November. Good luck to all the nominees.
SNS 100: It appears that the top 3 songs are breaking away from the pack, as they hold their positions, while gaining a lot of points. At the top for the second week is "Got to Be Good", by Gotts Street Park featuring Pip Millett, which is a virtual tie with the runner-up, "A Bar Song (Tipsy)" by Shaboozey, which holds at #2 (the tiebreaker is last week's position). A slightly distant #3 is "Rainbow" by Cage the Elephant, but again distancing itself from the rest. While "Got to Be Good" is a personal favorite and didn't chart anywhere, the other two are powered by #1 status on other charts. "A Bar Song", while settling for runner-up on Billboard's "Song of the Summer" chart for 2024, logs a ninth week atop the Hot 100; the longest run this year, and could take year-end honors there. As for "Rainbow", that currently holds the top spot on both the Alternative and Triple-A airplay charts.
As for the others in the top 10, it appears that "Takes One to Know One" by The Beaches (12-5) may challenge the top three in the coming weeks. Michael Kiwanuka's "Floating Parade" also enters the top 10. Also noted is that there is no beach music song among the top 9 for the first itme in quite a while; The Tonez's "I Hear You Knockin'", though still gaining points, is pushed back a second week, now at #10.
However, don't discount the shag music; "Back By Popular Demand" by Dustin Ahkuoi and Sharon Woodruff moves 14-11, while the Impact award goes to Marsha Morgan's "Knockin' Down Doors". Steve Cheek's "Last Summer" also bullets up to #18. "Step Into Your Power" by Ray Lamontagne is the only other new entry into the top 20.
This week, we have co-Movers of the week, tied with the same increase in points. They belong to last week's Top Debut, "Missing You (Missing Me)" by The Pozers, and Pip Millett's solo "Hard Life".
DEBUTS: Beebadoobee has been one of my favorite alternative artists the last couple years or so, and she scores the Top Debut this week with "Beaches". She and her band slow it down a bit with this heartfelt alt-pop offering. Sort of a change of pace here, with hints of Incubus' "Love Hurts". "Take A Bite" did okay here, peaking at #18, but this one should take Beatrice and her band to at least the Top 5, if not the very top. The song enters at #78.
Hozier follows his multi-format (Hot 100, SNS, Triple-A, Alternative) #1 "Too Sweet" with "Nobody's Soldier". This one has a driving beat, Hozier still braves through it with his soul-infused voice, and it's squarely in the alt-rock vein. It's great to see this artist having a "second wind" or so. The song never lets up.
Next is yet another song from Orbis Max (and another is still in the pipeline), "Tuesday Too". This one has the Jersey Sound stamp on it, again thanks to leader Dw Dunphy, and it rocks like it should.
Calypso Joe & the Coconuts had a recent mid-charter with "New Latitude" earlier this year but follows that one up with "Beacha' Didn't Know". Written by Charlie Sattenfield, who fronts and writes for the band, as well as for other beach artists, (notably a co-writer with Sylvia Johns Ritchie; they wrote Marsha Morgan's top 20 "Knockin' Down Doors"). This one has that awesome "Margaritaville" vibe, always a favorite for a song to sound like. Michael Lusk's lead vocal just blends in with the tone of the song.
Billie Eilish has been at the forefront of the pop scene for several years now, but it was only a few weeks ago that she broke through on Scenes 'n' Soundwaves with "Lunch", whilch peaked at #2. While that song was a top 10 hit on Billboard, it was superseded by "Birds of a Feather" which has been in the top 10 on the big chart for a while. While it's not immediate as "Lunch" for me, with a couple of listens, I like it more. This is excellently produced, and, like the prior song, she actually sings with a bit of zest. The song should definitely follow "Lunch" into the top 20.
Completing the SNS 100 entries is "What Getting Over You Looks Like", by The Dust-Ups. I touched upon this band a couple weeks ago; it's a collaboration between two artists that appeared (separately and together at different times) at Roselle Park's Arts Festival in recent years. It's led by home-towner Ryan Chatelain, who hit my top 10 a couple years back with "Static". The band also includes Alek Speck who also performed there. They then got together to form The Dust-Ups with two other members and performed at last year's festival. Earlier this year, the band released its eponymous debut and are touring the area. The song is a cool, steady beat with Chatelain's very Jersey-eque vocals (see, New Jersey does have a unique sound in its rock bands). I love Speck's drumming on here, and Joe Palmisano's guitar work is great as well. Palmisano is a multi-instrumentalist, and Stephan Swalsky is on bass. The Dust-Ups will be playing in Easton PA on September 29, one day after Ryan will be playing solo at the Roselle Park festival.
Two songs enter in Tremors: Royel Otis' cover of The Cranberries' "Linger", and Hippo Campus' "Paranoid".
This week's chart is the last to determine Scenes 'n' Soundwaves' "Song of the Summer" contest for 2024; the results will be posted next week.
