An "early" blog this week (actually it's when it supposed to come out, except that I've been late the last few weeks). I wanted to get this out before we go on a road trip. It would have come out even earlier if not for an explosive new song by Deb Browning and Marlisa Kay Small. And I am very lucky to receive an advance copy, resulting in an immediate (and lofty debut).
Ray Scott of Riptide radio interviews Deb Browning (C) and Marlisa Kay Small during the release of the beach music duo's new single, "Sunshine and Summertime". |
The dynamic duo, two of my beach music faves, who have performed together at gigs in the North Myrtle Beach area, and who I had the pleasure of catching one of them when I visited the area a year ago, have finally recorded a song together. The duet has been teased via posts by the beach music community, but the actual title wasn't revealed until Deb and Marlisa visited the studios of radio station 94.9 The Surf and sat down with DJ Jim Quick, who was the first to play the new song.
The title? "Sunshine and Summertime". And the living definitely felt easy when I heard the song!
If ever two people were having a blast in cutting a record, it's these two. If you've ever been down in the Carolina coast, or cruising along Ocean Drive on the Boulevard, you can probably relate. The song is all about life in that area. Of course, you can shag to it, bop to it, or do anything you wish with the song. After the song was played, Jim Quick loved it, and predicted this would be the song of the upcoming summer. It would be a great choice, and, given how these songs stay on the beach charts for extended periods of time, it could be the song of the fall and winter, too. If you're in a down mood, just put this song on. I guarantee it that it will lift your spirits.
"Sunshine and Summertime" was jointly produced by two of the best production outfits in the Grand Strand area. Tim Sidden, who is Deb's regular producer, arranged and engineered the recording, while production chores were handled by Ocean Drive Productions, headed by Melissa Hinson and Wayne Troutman, whose recent credits include the blog top tens "Everything's Changed" by Rivermist and "I'll Be Around" by Michael McMeel, as well as the chart-topping duet with Marlisa and Jerry West, "Love Really Hurts Without You".
Deb and Marlisa made the rounds on the afternoon of April 3 to promote the new song. Aside from meeting with Jim Quick at the 94.9 The Surf's studio, the duo moved on to Deckerz Bar and Grill, in North Myrtle Beach for a Riptide Radio interview with Ray Scott. After that, it was WOHS 101.5's turn, with Terri Gore and Randy Davis, also at Deckerz. The song was previewed at all three stations. The day was capped off there with a celebration of the song's launch.
Deb and Marlisa have performed together since mid-2022 when Deb's former gig partner had gotten a promotion and left the area. Originally a temporary fill-in, Marlisa, a former Ms. Senior South Carolina in 2018, made so much of an impression that she became Deb's permanent singing partner, and now, release their first duet.
As a result, the song debuts at a lofty #29 on the Scenes 'n' Soundwaves 100 chart this week, becoming only the ninth new entry to debut in the top 30 of the list. Get ready for a lengthy chart run here by two of the sincerest and talented singers in the music business.
SNS 100: Turning to the top part of the chart, Charlotte Sessions and Teddy Swims switch positions yet again, as "I've Fallen For a Dragon" moves back on top, for a fourth non-consecutive week, forcing "Lose Control" back to #2. It's the seventh week in a row that these two songs sit at the top of the SNS 100 in either order. However, next time, Starbuck's "Spring Break Shake" moving from 7-3, has a chance to finally break the duopoly. Incidentally, Starbuck's Bruce Blackman has announced a follow-up, "Beach A Go Go" for a summer release, so beach music will be very visible with warm weather coming. "Lose Control" also drops to #4 on the Hot 100 after a sole week at the top of the big chart. The rest of the Top 10 is stagnant, except for Deb Browning's former duet partners The Six Piece Suits, moving 13-10 with "I Thought You Knew". And, speaking of Deb yet again, her "Put Your Hand in the Hand", garners Impact honors, entering the Top 20 (22-15). Jaime Wyatt's "Feel Good" is the only other entry into the Top 20. And I have to add another Deb tidbit, as 2023's "Think I Found Forever" logs a 51st week on the chart, tying her "3 More Minutes" for the fifth longest run. If Deb can hold one for one more week, she will tie Ed Sheeran's "Thinking Out Loud" for fourth place.
NEWLY ADDED: I only added five new songs this week. The new song by Hozier, "Too Sweet" would have been the Top Debut this week but will settle for second highest this week. A look at the latest Billboard Hot 100 has one of those album bombs, this time coming from Future and Metro Boomin' with five debuts in the Top 10, including the new #1 "Like That" (with Kendrick Lamar). However, a big (and pleasant) surprise is the #5 debut of Hozier's "Too Sweet". It's a mid-tempo chugger which is a bit different from his other singles. The beat is persistent, although it still has the singer's stamp on it.
What's refreshing about the debut is that up until now, Hozier was considered a "one-hit wonder" with "Take Me To Church", but "Too Sweet" now makes two Top Tens for the Irish singer-songwriter. In contrast, Hozier has two blog #1's (neither of which is "Take Me To Church", that got to #2), "Someone New" (2015) and "Francesca" (2023). "Too Sweet " enters here at #65.
Next, we have the Rolling Stones, rocking once again with the third single off of Hackney Diamonds, "Mess It Up", doing what they do best. Finally, Catfish and the Bottlemen, who had a blog top 10 in 2019 with "Longshot'; and Local Natives, who scored with "Just Before Morning" in late 2022, both return with "Showtime" and "April", respectively. "Showtime" is in the center alternative rock lane, while "April" is in the Natives' dreamy, yet chugging, alt-rock mode. Both have chances.
As I hinted at above, this is a combined week as I take a one-week hiatus. The next blog will be dated April 14, and will be posted sometime that week.
