STILL A BIT behind, so again, this is brief.
Charlotte Sessions' "I've Fallen For a Dragon" stays at the top position on the Scenes 'n' Soundwaves 100 for a third week and continues to hold off Teddy Swims' "Lose Control" which holds at #2. Both songs are still gaining points, although not enough for a bullet. "Lose Control" had been #1 for two weeks before Ms. Sessions captured the spot. Swims' is also still in the runner-up position on the Billboard Hot 100. It would have been at the top finally, except that Ariana Grande's new album dropped, with 12 songs entering the big chart, including the #1 debut of "We Can't Be Friends (Wait For Your Love)". Last week's Billboard chart-topper, "Carnival" by Kanye West and Ty Dolla $ign, drops to #4.
Back to the SNS 100, The Black Keys' "Beautiful People (Stay High)", and Black Pumas' "Sauvignon" hold at #3 and #4, respectively, but are closing the gap on the top two. In the hunt are Rick Strickland's "Joined at the Heart" (#5), Karen Clayton and Mike Taylor's "I'm Your Puppet" (#6), and Cage the Elephant's "Neon Pill" (#7). Strickland tops one of the beach charts, while the Keys' head the alternative airplay, with CTE heading up the Triple-A listings this week.
New to the top ten is Juliet Callahan's "She Was Me", sneaking into the top 10 for her second entry in that portion of the chart (11-9), while, with Spring Break in full swing, Starbuck jumps 16-10, doing the "Spring Break Shake".
In the second ten are new entries, headed by the Impact winner, The Six Piece Suits' "I Thought You Knew" (31-17); Nadia Shutkufski's "Top Down" (25-18), Vacations' "Next Exit (28-19) and "Finger Wave" by Sadie Leigh (32-20). . Billy Joel also enters, albeit without a bullet, with "Turn The Lights Back On" (22-16).
Further down the list is the Mover of the Week, Anna Lavigne's "Butterfly" (67-56), and last week's Top Debut, "Murder on the Dance Floor" by Royel Otis, goes 65-52.
Deb Browing's take on the gospel-pop classic, "Put Your Hand in the Hand", from her Give Me Gospel set, enters Mitch Harb's beach chart at #25, and the SNS 100 at #48. |
TOP DEB-UT: Deb Browning's version of "Put Your Hand in the Hand" grabs Top Debut honors at #48. I mentioned last week that Deb sat down for an interview with beach music DJ Don Mark to discuss the song, along with her new gospel album release Give Me Gospel. While Canadian singer Anne Murray originally recorded the song in early 1971, as a B-side to her single "It Takes Time", it did not chart on the Hot 100. However, another Canadian outfit, Ocean, recorded it, and it peaked at #2 on the Hot 100. The song was written by another Canadian, Gene MacLellan, who also wrote Ms. Murray's breakout hit "Snowbird". "Put Your Hand in the Hand" is an oft-covered song, spiritual in nature, and I remember my grandmother, who was a devout churchgoer back then, sing that song, as I presume it was sang frequently in church.
As for Deb's take, while the lead single off Give Me Gospel, "Chain Breaker" (#37 this week) was aimed at Contemporary Christian stations, "Put Your Hand in the Hand" is marketed to her beach music fans. One listen and you'll know why. Deb makes the song all her own, changing the tempo drastically to a beach/shag beat that you can easily dance to. Excellent Tim Sidden production makes this a recording to be recognized with. The song is already on some beach charts, including Mitch Harb's Top 25 and a hitbound on Eric Bowman's The Wave survey. Nice groove here, and Deb seems to have a great time singing this.
Other debuts include a duet with Gwen Stefani and husband Blake Shelton, entering with "Purple Irises". These two seem to have the greatest success when they duet, and you can see that when you hear this song. It might take a couple of listens to really get into it. Listening to the lyrics, it seems it might even be autographical, with certain years mentioned. It's slow to get off the ground, but once it does, it flies high.
It's been a busy time for Internet band Orbis Max. While "Something About You" is still climbing my blog chart, and waiting in the wings is the next Tim Izzard duet, "You Know What You're Doing", I add the current single "Not This Time". The versatile e-band headed by Jerseyan Dw Dunphy, rocks out on this one. Starting off with a great Don Baake guitar intro, Dunphy's Jersey Shore-esque vocal takes over. Heck, this one can transport the listener to Asbury Park's Stone Pon". This band means business!
Before Billie Eilish, Olivia Rodrigo, even before Britney and Christina, we had Debbie Gibson, who as a teenager, had several hits in the 1980's. I've seen a lot of pages devoted to Ms. Gibson lately, thus I checked out a song off her most recent studio album, "Love Don't Care". I've added Debbie before, mostly recently a song of her 2022 holiday album, but her 2021 album The Body Remembers, yielded this new, danceable song that is persistent. This is actually the third track I've added from that album: "Girls Night Out" peaked at #93 in 2020, while "Me Not Loving You" got to #69 in 2022. "Love Don't Care" was originally released as a single in June 2023, but with some key posts by and about her (she was recently on and performed on an 80's cruise, and she is currently celebrating the 45th anniversary of her hit album Electric Youth), it can make some noise here. Now in her fifties, she sounds better than ever.
Also entering is the English female alt-rock trio HotWax, with "Phone Machine", definitely in the alternative arena; Yune, a project of David Dean Burkhart, a rather eclectic outing; New Jersey artists (Bergenfield) Bleachers with "Tiny Moves", an indie-pop confection; and legendary beach music group The Tams, with "Our Love Will Grow", a cover of a song originally done by New Orleans group The Showmen back in 1961. Has potential!!!
