WE HAVE A NEW #1 song on the Scenes 'n' Soundwaves 100 this week. Neo-soul outfit Thee Sacred Souls move to the top with "Easier Said Than Done". The San Diego-based group scores their first blog #1, after two near-misses. The song is off their 2022 debut, self-titled album. After scoring two blog top 5 (and charting on alternative and Triple-A), "Love is the Way", and "Running Away", both standalone singles, I had heard "Easier" off their debut album, and it blew me away. They seem to be the male equivalent of femme trio Say She She and is seemingly apart of a soul revival.
While I anxiously await their second album (they also have an EP out), in the pipeline is a collaboration with Molly Lewis on the song "Crushed Velvet". which I will add in a couple of weeks.

"Easier..." knocks Charlotte Sessions' "Should I Be The Man?" after a two-week reign at the top, but the big story this week is the Roselle Park native's follow-up, the bizarre yet awesome "I've Fallen For a Dragon". While "Should I Be The Man?" is a relative straightforward but catchy composition, the new song bends all genres, and you can hear the many styles that go into the song. I was looking up the genre called "Trip Hop" on Wikipedia, and it seems to fit this song. Also called "downtempo" (which is weird because the song is pretty much moving), trip hop, according to the entry includes, among other things, electronica, psychedelia, soul, breakbeat, rock, R&B, ska and lounge. And believe it or not, I can hear traces of all these styles in this song. Despite all that, the song is very cohesive and works to the fullest extent.
While "Should I Be the Man?" is a great introduction to Charlotte's talents, "Dragon" really showcases Ms. Sessons' versatility. I really hope the song can latch on to a radio or Internet station because this young woman should be going places.
The song grabs Top Debut honors coming in at #33 on this week's chart.
The top 10 is rather quiet this week as there are no bullets among the top eight songs, but still some jostling for position, namely an 8-5 rise for Gary Alexander's "There's Always Beach Music". Two debuts in the top 10 include Richard Swift's "Would You", and Gary Lowder and Smokin' Hot's years old remake of "Sitting in the Park".
"Sauvignon", a cut from the current Black Pumas album, gets the Impact nod this week (22-16), although radio is playing the latest single, "Ice Cream" which should debut next week. Varsity and Jaime Wyatt also debut in the top 20.
There are some big movers below the twenty spot that could enter the top 20 as early as next week. Colorjoy is close to attaining a seventh top 20 song from their Golden Age set as "Cigarettes and Vanilla" moves 33-24; just behind is Teddy Swims' bluesy "Lose Control" to grab Mover honors in a 45-25 advance. The song moves 8-4 on the Billboard Hot 100 and sits at #1 on the Triple-A chart. Look for a big jump next week. The latest from Orbis Max and Tim Izzard, Starbuck, and last week's Top Debut, The Black Keys also make impressive moves.
DEBUTS: While Charlotte Sessions' latest debuts at a high #33, there are other worthy new entries. Carolina Beach Music is a very diversified genre, where there is a mix of shag-able up-tempo songs and slow-dance ballads. There's also a nice mix of original songs from singer-songwriters such as Deb Browning, Rick Strickland, Lesa Hudson, Bubba D. Liverance, Jerry Powell and many others. But remakes of soul and beach classics from the 60's and 70's are also awesome when they're redone. The latest in that latter group is "I'm Your Puppet" by Karen Clayton and Mike Taylor. The singers hail from The Castaways and The Holiday Band respectively, with Ms. Clayton winning the CBMA female vocalist of the year in 2022. The song was a hit by James and Bobby Purify in 1966, and this new version, melodically true to the original, has the production just different enough to make it stand on its own. The harmonies on the chorus are very together, and when the vocals are divided, the soulfulness of each come out. With several other beach remakes of classic soul hits abounding on the SNS 100 these days, the song should be very welcome, especially with Mike Taylor currently on the blog chart both with The Holiday Band, and a duet with Sylvia Johns Ritchie.
Two alternative rock favorites return to the chart after lengthy hiatuses: Cage The Elephant enters with "Neon Pill". It's more of a down to earth mid-tempo compared to previous outings, but the chorus comes alive, and the band hasn't lost a beat. The song really gets going midway through. CTE has had much success here (11 top tens, including two #1's), and that should continue with this. Meanwhile, Two Door Cinema Club's "Sure Enough" is a mover with some 80's overtones and 90's attitude. Very danceable and keeps going and doesn't let go. It's TDCC's first blog song in five years and should essentially pick up where they left off.
Also debuting is Carly Pearce, featuring Chris Stapleton with "We Don't Fight Anymore". Ms. Pearce is one of my favorite country artists, and this is a nice country/blues ballad that should do well here and on the national charts, especially with the genre hot right now. There are three pop hits debuting as well. Arianna Grande's "Yes And..? which debuted at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 (and currently #5) a rather rhythmic pop romp consistent to what's out there now; Doja Cat's follow-up to "Paint the Town Red", "Agona Hills", which after an exciting intro, is standard hip-hop, and unlike the prior hit, there's no cool loop of a classic song. Tate McRae makes her blog debut with "Greedy", again standard pop, but she sings with some emotion, especially during the choruses.
