This one is late so it will be brief.
When we last left you, Taylor Swift accomplished a sweep of all the top ten positions on the Billboard Hot 100 last week. As expected, many of them fall off that section this week, but her "Anti-Hero" stays at number one. Rihanna's "Lift Me Up" debuts at #2; the song is from the latest Black Panther movie. Both of these songs were added here last week, with Rihanna grabbing Mover of the Week honors (91-65) and Taylor moving 89-69.
On the Hot 100, Ms. Swift still has four songs in the top ten aside from "Anti-Hero", but it allows the mainstays to get back into the Top Ten. Sam Smith and Kim Patras' "Unholy", which was #1 before the Taylor blitz, moves back 11-3, Steve Lacy's former blog and Billboard #1, goes back to #4 from #12, and Harry Styles' "As It Was", which was #1 for 15 weeks on Billboard and two here, moves back 16-5. While I didn't add the Sam Smith song as it's too "sparse-poppish" for me, the other two hold steady: Lacy at #2 and Styles at #26.
Moving to my blog list, Juliet Callahan maintains her #1 spot with "Burning", which has a comfortable but not insurmountable lead, as it garners a second week at the top. Lacy, as mentioned above, holds at #2, with Starbuck's "You're the Reason"--which fell off Pat Gwinn's beach chart after only one month, still inches up here to #3, leading the beach music songs which still number half of the top ten. Rick Strickland and Deb Browning & Six Piece Suits inch up to #5 and #6 respectively but remain strong. After a wild week last time, there are no new entries in the top 10, and only one in the Top 20, that being Ryan Chatelain's "Static" (25-18, Impact), who joins fellow Roselle Park Arts Festival performer Jennifer Cintron (#8) in the upper echelon.
DEBUTS: The new entries are led by reggae artist King Tappa, with the title track to his new album, "9 to 5", following his top ten "Are You Feeling It", and the new one adds a bit of soul to the reggae. Maneskin slows it down slightly with 'The Loneliest" at least when compared to their two prior hits but should still garner exposure and bring the Italian quartet back to the top 20 here. Jersey singer Sharon Van Etten has her first new one in a while, with "Mistakes", which has a steady rhythmic, bouncy beat and her voice is in fine form. This should do very well for her. Off Guard follows its top 10 "B.L.U." with "October", which rocks rather hard but is in the band's usual form, and Matt Weiss' vocals blend right in.
"Big Bad Batch of Blues" by The Holiday Band is this week's beach music entry; the song has done very well on various charts in that genre; I would have added the song a while back except it wasn't available commercially. The song combines the standard beach beat with a slice of jazz. The band's prior blog entry, "Yours" hit #11 here in 2019.
All Time Low, which had a monster alternative radio hit with "Monsters" that featured Blackbear, but which only mid-charted here, are back with "Sleepwalking". A full alt rock sound on this one as the band jams a bit. Could click. Finally, new to SNS this week is the band Talk (not to be confused with 80's new wave band Talk Talk), with "Run Away to Mars". Sort of a folk indie/rock hybrid with some Elton John and Marcus Mumford overtones. A slow start builds a bit, and the harmonies are pretty good.
A FEW MORE THOUGHTS: While awards season normally starts earlier in the year, the Country Music Association (CMA) awards were televised last week. Normally, I'm not a fan of awards shows, but this was refreshing to watch as there were no politics. There were tributes to recently passed legends like Loretta Lynn, Alabama's Jeff Cook, and rockabilly legend/ rock 'n' roll co-founder Jerry Lee Lewis who had a second career of sorts on the country chart in the early 1970's. There was a jam on "Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On" featuring two faves, Elle King, and The Black Keys performing that song. Country has made inroads on my SNS 100 of late, with six songs on the chart. Unfortunately, there are none by female artists, but I plan on rectifying it. Lainey Wilson, who was on the show, is an awesome singer, so expect a song from her in the near future, and I will delve into others.
Last week I mentioned I was working on a "#1 Song Video", similar to the Billboard Hot 100 #1's I featured last week. Mine would include snippets of all my number one songs since I started my blog in 2010. I have completed it, although I plan on waiting until the end of the year to include any other subsequent blog toppers. It's also subject, of course, to any copyright issues, but I am excited to present that to everyone. If it's successful, I plan on doing some for my yearly Top 100's and other lists I've created. I've played back the video several times and have missed some of the bands that scored on it, as well as the music that i listened to.
Finally, as I write this, another awards show, the Carolina Beach Music Awards (CBMA) took place last night (November 13). Since that genre has taken the blog by storm this year, I hope to cover the award winners on my next blog. Twenty-seven songs on my latest list, have, or were, on various beach music charts.
