Lacy Tops Styles; Rick Strickland Debuts New Beach Music Single; Black Keys Get 8th #1 (SNS week of 10/2/2022)

This one is running late so I am going to make it brief.

ON THE HOT 100, Steve Lacy dethrones Harry Styles' "As It Was" as "Bad Habit" hits #1 on the Billboard survey.  This ends Styles' 15-week run that set a record for the longest runner at the top spot by a solo artist with no featured performers.    Lacy, unlike many songs that debut at the top spot (or near it), started the old-fashioned way, starting at #100 on that chart and gradually working his way up.   He was at #2 for several weeks before finally knocking out "As It Was".

Steve Lacy's "Bad Habit" hits the #1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100, ending the 15-week streak of Harry Styles' "As It Was".  The song moves to #3 on the Scenes 'n' Soundwaves 100 list this week.

It's a bit surprising--but a pleasant one at that-- that "Bad Habit" is this high on the chart because several other artists that span genres---and he encompasses a bit of alt-rock, Triple A (he's top 10 on that list), soul and hip-hop---usually don't get noticed.    This is a very cool song that also functions as a pop record as well, and hopefully we will hear more from and about him.

This change also affected my SNS 100 for the week.   Lacy moves from #6 to #3 here, while Styles drops 4-10.    "Bad Habit" has a good chance at the top spot next week.     Back to the Billboard list, there is, of course, a chance that Styles can return to #1, something that he's done the four previous times that he was knocked out there.    In 24 weeks, he hasn't been lower than #3, and he did that only once.    He debuted at #1 in April there and has been #2 all of the other weeks.    But, while he was knocked out previously, it was usually for a song that either debuted there based on streaming demand, or via a promotion by the label of the song that caused it to sharply rise.   Those songs--which included Beyonce's "Break My Soul"--would drop precipitously out of the top spot a week or two later.    Lacy, as mentioned before, had a slow rise up the chart from the bottom so it's possible that he may stay there.

Meanwhile, Glass Animals' "Heat Waves" drops a notch to #19, logging its 89th week on the Hot 100.  If it holds on for one more week, it will tie the longevity record set by The Weeknd's "Blinding Lights".

[As this blog is late, I already know next week's positions.  Lacy holds at #1, Styles drops to #3, while "Heat Waves" drops a notch to #20, and ties the longevity record of 90 weeks]

IT'S AIN'T OVER UNTIL THE AKRON DUO SINGS:  Meanwhile on my list, The Black Keys move into the top position with "It Ain't Over".   The song, from their latest album Dropout Boogie, becomes the duo's 8th #1 blog song.    They are just four behind the record of 12 set by Fitz and the Tantrums.   It's interesting to note that Fitz's 12th number one, "123456" came the week of May 19th, 2019, and was knocked out by the Keys' "Lo/Hi" which had returned to that spot after three previous weeks when it was knocked out by Fitz and company.    And while the Tantrums', which had gone into a bubblegum pop-oriented direction, hadn't returned to the top spot since, The Black Keys have had three additional blog toppers.

"It Ain't Over" is the second single from Dropout Boogie to top the list.   Excluding their experimental Delta Kream set from last year, it's the third straight album that had yielded two blog #1's, and fifth straight alt-rock oriented set that yielded at least a #1 song on my list dating back to 2010's Brothers at the start of my blog.    It should also be noted that it took 14 weeks for "It Ain't Over" to get to the top spot, a long time by their standards.    I actually had jumped on the song long before alternative and Triple-A stations did as they were still playing the previous single, "Wild Child".   Reception has been a bit colder for "Over", and while it's top 10 on Triple-A, it's only #31 on the Alternative list after seven weeks.

Finally, "It Ain't Over" ends a six-week run for Carolina beach music on the list, which began with "The Thing About You" by the Carolina Coast Band for three weeks, followed by "Cruzin' Down the Boulevard" for three weeks as well.   The latter, by the Carolina Blue Dots, tumbles a bit as the group had been touting its follow-up "New Shoes, Let's Go Dancing", as it tops Mitch Harb's chart for the fourth straight week.

Steve Lacy, as mentioned earlier moves 6-3 with "Bad Habit", while "The Thing About You" drops a notch to 4.   Holding at #5 is "Hey Girl Hey Boy" by the Carolina Dreamers.  Juliet Callahan moves to #6 with "Burning", while Starbuck's "You're The Reason" advances into the top 10 (12-7).   With Bubba D. Liverance's "In My '64" (10-8), beach music has five of the top eight.   Long Island-based Off Guard grabs its first top ten since 2019's "Lights" as "B.L.U." moves 13-9.   Styles' "As It Was" is #10.  Deb Browning, after 19 straight weeks in the top 10, drops 6-11 with her former #1, "3 More Minutes".

Big movers into the top 20 include OneRepublic's Billboard Top 10 "I Ain't Worried" (Impact award), and yet another beach music gem, Doyle Wood and Sylvia James Ritchie's "Not Tonight (I Have a Heartache".    Also jumping back into the top 20 is Lesa Hudson's "Breathless" which originally peaked here at #11, got as low as #32 but has yo-yoed back up towards the top of the list, thanks to both the song being #1 on a couple beach music lists, as well as her FB live stint last week (more on that below).  "Breathless" moves 27-17 in its 21st chart week.     Jennifer Cintron's "Run" takes Mover honors (57-44).

Lesa Hudson (L) and Rick Strickland, both of the Rick Strickland band, hosts  "Rick and Lesa's Happy Hour" each Monday on Facebook live at 7 PM.   The October 3 edition featured the premiere of Strickland's new single "You're the One For Me", which debuted at #61 on the SNS 100.

IT'S HAPPY HOUR AGAIN:  Speaking of Lesa Hudson, her bandmate Rick Strickland, who heads the band that bears his name with he and Lesa as vocalists in their live shows, broadcasted their "Rick & Lesa's Happy Hour" on Monday October 3, to premiere Strickland's latest song, "You're the One for Me".   The hour-long webcast featured songs by both Strickland and Ms. Hudson, and the new song debuted at the end of the hour.    And a big "thank you" to Lesa for the shout-out to myself and my blog!  It made my day.    "Rick & Lesa's Happy Hour" is featured every Monday at 7 PM on Facebook Live.

NEW AND BRIEF:   Six new songs this week, headed by "You're the One For Me" at #61.    Strickland follows up his top ten "Sandy" with this one that has that classic, bouncy beach beat.  Kind of reminds me of classic beach bands like The Tams and Chairmen of the Board.   A very upbeat, cheery positive song of a new love should give Strickland a third-straight top 20 song.   Very nice!

Also this week, new songs debut by British rockers The Struts with "Fallin' With Me",a nice slice of rhythmic, catchy alt-rock; The Backseat Lovers' haunting "Growing/Dying", by the band that hit top 10 blog two years ago with "Kilby Girl"; and Jimmy Hall, who was with the southern rock band Wet Willie in the 1970's and had a cool solo top 30 hit with "I'm Happy That Love Has Found You" in 1980, going the beach music route with "Jumpin' for Joy".

While I have ignored country music lately (well, at least the kind that wasn't on beach music lists), I add two songs from that genre that are at the top of that chart: Morgan Wallen's "You Proof" and Cole Swindell's "She Had Me At Heads Carolina" which despite the title, is NOT beach music.  It's the first blog charter for Swindell and the fourth for Wallen.
