Hey there! First of all, once again, sorry for the delay. I've been very busy in other endeavors, mostly doing a lot of hiking and geocaching (which someday, I will explain to you what that is). Thus, we have another "double issue", plus the fact that this is running late as it is. With the pandemic easing a bit (the new BA2 variant notwithstanding), I've been getting out more, and remember that it was two years ago, at the onset of COVID-19 that I had reactivated the blog. While the future of this blog is still uncertain, for a few reasons, I am going to keep laboring on as much as I can. Although for this one, I will keep it brief.
Tim Izzard's "Empty My Head" spends a third week as my #1 song, but narrowly holds off Einstein's Dad's "Here to Home". Close behind are Anna Lavigne's "Mindblown", holding at #3 but still gaining points, and Portugal. The Man's "What, Me Worry?" (#1 on Billboard's Triple-A chart) moving to #4, becoming the first established act to crack my top 5 in several weeks. Any of these four songs could hit the top next week. If "Here to Home" does the trick, it will be only the fourth instrumental to do so since I started my blog in August 2010.
Hegazy holds at #5, and the songs by Babeheaven, SadGirl, LP and Papercuts remain strong but again, can't move up too much but are closing the gap between the top echelon. Red Hot Chili Peppers' "Black Summer", currently #1 on Billboard's alternative chart, still move up, but get pushed out of the top 10. The second ten is also very active with big moves by The Black Keys (15-12), Mitski (20-13, former Triple-A number one), David F. Porfirio (21-14, Impact Aware), Band of Horses, Joy Again, and Bob Moses. Just outside the top 20 is last week's top debut, Deb Browning & Six Piece Suits' "Take Me By the Hand" moving 45 to 23 and getting the Top Mover. By the way, I want to thank Deb for sharing my last blog that featured her; it got hundreds of likes and many of her followers loved the article. This is a very talented singer/songwriter, and deserves all the accolades she can get.
After several tumultuous weeks of awesome adds, this week's new playlist adds are more subdued, but still worthy. New Jersey's Sharon Van Etten is back with "Porta", which is a soulful, bass-driven up tempo heartfelt romp that has potential. Christina Taylor had a big top 10 blog hit with "Damn Boy" which made inroads into the country scene, but somehow still missed the charts; she follows it up with "Somebody Will". Continuing the same theme as the previous song, is standard but solid country fare. Ms. Taylor sings with her heart and perhaps this is the one to break her for good.
Anyone remember Don Dixon? Back in the mid 1980's, he made inroads on the rock charts with "Praying Mantis". Subsequent efforts went unnoticed, but a look at this week's Carolina Beach Music charts show him on it with "Young Love", that featured Dip Ferrell and The True Tones. It's definitely got the beach music beat and nice to Shag to, with several plays it can break here on my playlist. It's great to see artists from the past, and those maybe overlooked, given a fair shake in this genre. In the wake of Deb Browning's success, I will go to these charts more frequently. Kacey Musgraves follows her top five blog hit "Justified" with "Camera Roll", and Weezer returns with "A Little Bit of Love". Ms. Musgraves is a slow, rather sparse, ballad which could catch on with several listens, similar to Brandi Carlile's latest, and the Weezer song is a mid-tempo light rocker that could click. Also added this week or The Lumineers' "Where We Are", and finally Jack White follows up "Taking Me Back" with the acoustic-like "Love is Selfish".
