Adele to Mariah: Wait Your Turn! (SNS week of 12/12/2021)

This one will be very quick as I hope to do one more regular blog before Christmas.

HOT 100:  You know those memes that undoubtedly come out every November?    The month where all the Adult Contemporary stations switch to all Christmas music, and Hallmark starts its wall-to-wall holiday movies, well before Thanksgiving?   The meme is usually a turkey telling Santa to wait his turn...Thanksgiving is first!!

Adele's "Easy on Me" holds off Mariah Carey's annual "All I Want For Christmas Is You" for the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100.

Well, the Billboard Hot 100 is sort of like that this week.   Adele's "Easy on Me" holds the number one position on the big chart for a seventh week, preventing Mariah Carey's perennial "All I Want for Christmas Is You" from grabbing the top spot--at least for now--for a third straight year.   In 2019, the song, originally released in 1994 finally hit number one for three weeks that season.   Last year it held it for two weeks (and would have had a third had Taylor Swift's "Willow" not debuted at number one that last week of the year).     Following Mariah at #2, we have "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree" (#3), "A Holly Jolly Christmas" (#5), "Jingle Bell Rock" (#6), and "It's the Most Wonderful Time" of the year (#10) in the top ten, with Wham!, Jose Feliciano, The Ronettes, Dean Martin and Nat "King" Cole in the second ten.  Several more are listed below that.

ON MY CHART: It's also a close race on my playlist as ScreenAge's "Like Fine Wine" barely holds off Anna Lavigne's "Dance the Last Goodbye", to gain a second week at #1.    Fleet Foxes' "Featherweight" holds at 3.   Next week it looks like a toss-up...most likely either ScreenAge or Ms. Lavigne, although the Foxes have an outside chance as well.    Anna's "This Time" moves to #4, with what looks like the winner of this holiday season for me is Kristin Chenoweth's "Why Couldn't It Be Christmas Every Day", with a 15-5 jump and Mover of the Week.  Can it hit number one, a feat that only two other Christmas songs have done: (The Killers' "I Feel It in My Bones", 2012; Katy Perry's "Cozy Little Christmas"; 2018)?  The song is far behind the top 3, and with really no airplay or buzz on the song, it is unlikely.  But you never know.

Getting the Impact award is the quartet of Christina Taylor, Haley Mae Campbell, Brenna Bone and Kaylee Rose, with "Jingle Bell Rock" moving 37-19.  Ed Sheeran and Elton John's "Merry Christmas" also moves big from 73-47.    And it's another holiday song that grabs Top Debut honors, that being Train's "Mittens".  The song is from the new Hallmark movie, Christmas in Tahoe, which stars front man Pat Monahan and is based on the band's 2015 album of the same name, although this song isn't on that collection.    It's a midtempo rather funky trip, and a nice one when the organ kicks in.   The band seems to have a good time with this.   No doubt it'll have a happy ending on the playlist! I have to say that there is a good crop of holiday songs this Christmas season.    There are 9 songs on the list this year.  Will any of them become classics, or will they be forgotten next year?  You never know, but they're on my list (which I've have checked twice!), so I'll have this forever.

NEW: I am limiting the debuts for the rest of the year so I can listen more to the holiday stuff, but have added two new non-Christmas songs, both getting some alternative airplay.  From the L.A. scene is Cuffed Up, with "Bonnie".  There are comparisons to early 90's bands like The Pixies and Sonic Youth.   The song definitely carried the sound of that era, pure alt-rock and ambience-filled.     Meanwhile, from England come Bloc Party, with "Traps". Also, a rocker, this one seems to mix elements of punk, ska and maybe a bit of glam as well.    The band has been on my list before, most recently in 2016 with "The Love Within" (#92 peak), which this new song has already passed.   Interesting!

Finally, inching onto the list before being a Tremor last week is "Stay" by The Kid LAROI and Justin Bieber, a song which was #1 for seven weeks on Billboard, and has stuck around the top five for months.  It was the only song that prevented Drake from dominating the entire top ten a few months back, and, along with Adele, it's helping to impede the progress of the Christmas songs there. LAROI's previous song, "Without You", featuring Miley Cyrus, peaked here at #22.  It's a bit of funky pop, maybe a notch above what normally passes for music these days.    It comes in at #94.  I figured it's good for a week or so, although it could catch on with a few more listens.  We shall see.

COMING UP:  Next blog will be my last regular one of 2021, which will be my year's recap.    I haven't yet decided if I'm going to do an updated Christmas Top 100 list for this year; that all depends on when I get the recap edition out.   Then of course, is my annual Top 100 of the Year, which should be very interesting.    Then I have a decision to make about the future of both this blog and my listening and reviewing current music, and/or, how will I be listening to it.   But I won't worry about that just yet!
