Fleet Foxes, Anna Lavigne Battle it Out; ScreenAge Leaps Into Top 10; 'Blues' Keys Debut (SNS week of 4/18/2021)

 This one is a bit late so I will keep it short.    Fleet Foxes' "Sunblind" stays at the top position on my playlist this week, holding off another challenge by Scottish singer Anna Lavigne's "Every kind of heaven".  Both songs are well ahead of the pack, and probably will stay 1-2--in either order--for a couple more weeks or so.

Oneiric, Jade Bird and pop star The Weeknd all bullet in the Top 10, but the next number one could very well be ScreenAge's "North Star".   A bit more on that Jersey band below.   Tytillidie inches into the top 10 with "Doomsday".

In the second ten, The Offspring appears headed for its first blog top ten as "Let the Bad Times Roll" moves 17-13, while Winnetka Bowling League is close to its eighth such designation as "Romantic Way" moves 13-11.  Babeheaven and Valerie June featuring Carla Thomas both enter the top 20, while Delacey, despite a strong debut (#59) back in January with "Unlovable", took 16 weeks to finally crack that top 20 designation  Pageants' 'All Bets Aside", last week's other big debut along with ScreenAge, moves 42-26 in its second week.

The Black Keys have released an old "hill blues" tune Crawling Kingsnake as lead single from their album of blues covers, Delta Kream.

THE BLUE KEYS?:  The Top Debut this week goes to "Crawling Kingsnake", the new single from The Black Keys' upcoming album Delta Kream.  That set, which drops May 14 is a departure for the duo, as it consists of covers of hill country blues songs.   It's not their first foray into that genre; back in 2006 before they broke through, they released the EP Chulahoma.    Given the bands stripped-down basic rock roots, it's not a far stretch for them to take on the blues, as much of their music has blues influences, most notably the "Weight of Love" track from their 2014 album Turn Blue.   

"Crawling Kingsnake" is a cover of a song dating back to 1941 originally done by blues guitarist Big Joe Williams, and notably covered by John Lee Hooker around the same time, and who recorded several versions of it, including one with Mick Jagger in the 1990's.    The song is more of a country blues style, which fits in with the theme to the new album, the Keys' tenth.   The song should easily top the recent "Keep My Name Outta Your Mouth and put the band back in the top 20.   The song debuts at #63.

Other adds this week include the Joy Formidable's "Into the Blue", a palatable alt-rocker from the Welsh band;  Julien Baker, a singer-songwriter from Tennessee, making her blog debut with "Heatwave", a hybrid of alt-rock and folk; veteran Liz Phair, who was very popular in the 1990's with songs like "Whip Smart", also making a blog debut with "Hey Lou", which is apparently about early alternative legend Lou Reed, and has some Velvet Underground undertones to it; and finally Grouplove, with "Deadline", its twelfth blog entry, but still trying for its first top ten since "Tongue tied"  way back in 2012.

HAPPENINGS:  Speaking of ScreenAge, it appears that the band is going full throttle.  The Jersey quartet will be making its live streaming debut on Friday April 30 at 7 PM, and have also announced that the second single from their upcoming DNR album, "Think Again" will drop on May 7.  The band certainly isn't resting on their laurels.  Meanwhile, another Jersey band, Oneiric, now #4 with "The Ride" is busy working on their debut album, and are looking forward to live gigs soon.    Keeping with fave  Jersey bands, The Outcrops had some acoustic shows this month, including one up in the Adirondacks of upstate New York,  but the full band has a good live schedule. Some dates include Division Street in Somerville NJ on May 29, and The Parker House in Sea Girt at the Jersey shore on June 27.  Lead singer Cassidy Rain has also performed some solo gigs as well.   No word on whether the band is recording the long awaited follow up to their #1 blog hit "Lost Days" or their 2019 debut Peace of Mind.   Remember Christina Taylor?   The country singer from North Carolina has released a new single, "As Good as You Look", which will debut next week.
