Pretty much a quiet blog, and I will explain the title below.
Bakar maintains the number one spot for a fifth week, and it holds steady as it continues to climb the Triple-A chart. However, the gap between it and the number two song "Pixie Dust" continues to narrow, and it's a toss-up as to which one will come out ahead next week. Meanwhile, Shannon Marsyada, and Jade Bird also continue to advance to the 3 and 4 spots, and don't discount Gia Ness with her "Across the Universe" moving to #6. Elsewhere in the top echelon, Caamp's 'Officer of Love" in its sixth week topping the Triple-A chart moves 11-8, and David F. Porfirio grabs his second top 10 with "Evening At the Pier" (13-10). Some big movers in the second ten, lead by Emily MacMahon's "Only Us", Ariel Pink's "Crybaby", as well as Gwen Stefani's "Let's Me Introduce Myself" and the late-blooming Django Django's "Spirals".
New Jersey's Bryan Hansen Band leads this weeks playlist adds. |
Eight more debuts this week, headed by Bryan Hansen Band's "Waiting For Tomorrow". The band, from New Jersey, makes it's debut on my blog playlist. The three piece band describes themselves as an Adult Alternative (aka Triple-A) band playing funk, rock, soul and R&B. They have played venues all around the state and beyond. The guys have been around since 2016 and have released three albums, of which the most recent, 2019's Gas Money has yielded this single, originally released last May. At the time, there was a contest for fans to post a video of themselves jamming to this shuffling, driving, gutsy song. The band them put them all together in the resulting video. The song is a winner and should do very well here. You may remember last month that it was this band that released a video remake of the holiday classic "Christmas Wrapping" along with Kim Boyko (who I will feature in coming weeks). While that song wasn't commercially available, all their other music is.
Out of the rest of the debuts, of note is "Freedom" by Illiterate Light, an experimental rock duo from Harrisonburg VA; the song features Devon Gilfillan, coming off a blog #1 with "The Good Life". It's pretty much a dreamy soul romp that works effectively. The Black Keys are back, sort of, with "Keep My Name Outta Your Mouth". Similar to the Rolling Stones' "Scarlet" which was recorded during their Goats Head Soup sessions, but not originally released on it until a recent deluxe version, this song was from 2010 when the Akron duo released Brothers, which was their breakthrough release that contained the first ever blog #1 "Tighten Up".
Also added are some follow-ups to blog hits: Iration's "Coastin'", Harry Styles' "Golden", and My Morning Jacket's "Run It". Rounding out the debuts are two "regulars": Cold War Kids and Foster The People, with "1 X 1" and "The Things We Do", respectively.
CORRECTIONS: In my Top 100 of 2020 blog in which I noted that ScreenAge's "Blue Eyed Addiction" was the first all New Jersey band to capture the year-end top spot since The Four Seasons in 1976, I had also noted acts that contained Jersey members, such as the DeLeo brothers from Stone Temple Pilots, Debbie Harry from Blondie and Tommy James & the Shondells Peter Lucia Jr (along with James himself. I omitted, however, Kate Pierson and Fred Schneider, both of the B-52's who topped my 1990 list with "Roam". While it's true that the band is associated with Athens Georgia, both of these members were born and/or grew up in the Garden State.
WINDING DOWN: Now, back to the title. As you know, I've been grinding out this blog for ten and a half years now, with the intention of talking music, mostly new, but old as well. I have discovered new artists and in many cases become friends with them. What was discouraging was last week I got a total of four views, which is an all-time low. That contrasts with the 180from the week before what I featured Emily MacMahon and Ian Roberts' band Tinkers Lane. The interests with the blog are confined to those artists and their fans/followers, and less with my friends who probably are into more older music, or at least more popular music than what I'm blogging about.
For now, I will keep this going weekly and updating my blog playlist. I still want to do editions on Alan Pasqua, a musician from my hometown of Roselle Park as well as a dear friend Gia Ness who is currently in my top 10. After that, it's playing it by ear.
