A bit late again with this edition, so it's just going to be a few words on what I'm listening to this week.
Miley Cyrus maintains the top spot this week with "Midnight Sky", the emotional pop song that has been going through my head the last several weeks. It's her third week at the top, two weeks short of her other blog #1, "Malibu" which held the top spot for five weeks in the summer of 2017. While it's a comfortable lead, there are two songs that could challenge for playlist supremacy next week: Devon Gilfillian's "Good Life" and Surfer Blood's "Karen". Any of the three have a shot next week. Further down the list are two big movers that debuted last week: The Fleshtones' "Alex Trebek", a tribute to the recently passed Jeopardy! host, with a big jump from 54 to 19, another song I can't get out of my head; and Bakar's "1st Time" (65-34). The Fleshtones' song may suffer from quicker burnout in the long run, but that remains to be seen.
Brittany Howard, whose latest release "You'll Never Walk Alone" is from a 1945 Broadway show, Carousel. |
NEW AND NOTEWORTHY: I always scour my Facebook News Feed for anything new, and one of my friends, Gail Bradley posted the latest from Brittany Howard. The Alabama Shakes frontwoman, whose solo "Stay High" went top 10 blog late last year, is back covering the standard "You'll Never Walk Alone", a perfect vehicle for her soulful voice. The oft-covered song dates back to 1945 and it's inclusion in the Broadway musical Carousel, via its authors Rodgers and Hammerstein. The list of artists who have covered the song is endless, but the first big version to hit the charts was by R&B artist Patti Labelle who scored a #34 pop hit in 1963 with the song. British Invasion group Gerry & the Pacemakers, in 1965 took the song to #48 on the Billboard Hot 100, Elvis Presley's version in 1968 got to #48, followed by Johnny Maestro and the Brooklyn Bridge's #51 placement a year later. Earlier this year, Marcus Mumford of Mumford & Sons recorded the song, and now Ms. Howard has done so as well. Also of note is that this was the closing song sung by Jerry Lewis on his annual Muscular Dystrophy Telethon that ran from 1966 to 2010.
Next on the debut list is the latest from Winnetka Bowling League, "Congratulations", from their new, third EP of the same name. This is the band's sixth appearance on the SNS 100 playlist this year alone, with three of those songs going to #1. This one is their best since "Kombucha", and probably their most rocking since. It's a steady beat, with Matthew Koma's voice holding sway. It should take them back to the upper reaches. It would be nice if alternative or Triple-A radio would embrace this one like they did with "Kombucha" or to an extent with "CVS".
Next is "Pixie Dust" by local Jersey artist Elise Farnsworth, following her #1 "In the Morning Light", also from her debut Turn Her Up. She had released a version of the song as a video earlier this year with members of her very musical family and loads of school kids joining in. In contrast, the version from her album is more of a rocker, almost in the punk range and keeps on moving. Needless it say, a third straight blog hit is on the way.
Also added is the latest from Jade Bird, "Headstart". The English singer-songwriter has two top 20 blog hits to her credit: 2018's "Uh Huh", and "I Get No Joy" from the following year. A little raw, much emotion effort is another winner for her....Arlo Parks is another from across the pond, has her first blog entry with "Hurt". She is of Nigeran, Chadian and French descent, and has been named a "breakthrough act'" of 2020 by the BBC. Her voice and style is reminiscent of that of Phoebe Ryan's....Lake Street Dive, best known here for 2016's "Call off Your Dog", returned with the socially-aware "Making Do".....Donna Missal releases her fourth song from Lighter, "Just Like You" is a mid-tempo rock song....finally The Strokes' "The Adults Are Talking" which should top their recent "Brooklyn Bridge to Chorus".
As I am not sure when my next blog will go off, I want to wish all my friends and readers (both of you...lol), a happy and especially safe Thanksgiving.
