The Outcrops Make the Most of Playing Outside Live Again (SNS week of 9/6/2020)

While this blog is actually dated during the Labor Day weekend, I am actually  writing this 8 days later.    In a post on Facebook, I had vowed to try and get out more (now that events are being held again), while still social distancing and wearing masks when needed.   I had also listed some local artists that I wanted to see.    On Sunday, September 13, I fulfilled one of my wishes.

One of the bands that I have been following are The Outcrops.   And while I had seen them before---back in May 2019, to be exact---this was the first time I had seen them live since I had started actively listening to their music, and including their work on my blog playlist.  Turns out that I happened to be in the Clinton NJ area that day for geocaching and that it turned out the band was playing at a place called Riley and Jakes, just outside of that town.    It was a partly cloudy Sunday on the relatively cool side--mid 70's, and a decent crowd was scattered along the grounds in back of the building.   There was a bar and patio with distanced tables as well as the lawn area.

The Outcrops

I had arrived around 3 PM, two hours into their performance, presumably during the second set.   Unlike many band that seemed obligated to play covers, The Outcrops played many of their originals.   Actually the first song played when I was arrived WAS a cover, of Aretha Franklin's 1967 hit "Baby I Love You", which turned out to be a ten minute jam.    The Outcrops remind me of  Stevie Ray Vaughn' and Double Trouble.   A great mix of rock 'n' roll, blues and soul, along with that "jam-band presence".  Lead singer and rhythm guitarist Cassidy Rain has been compared to everyone from Grace Potter to Susan Tedeschi.

Like many artists this year, they had to wait out the first few months of the pandemic, but were able to perform in various combinations acoustically with a couple of the members.  But a few weeks ago, they were back performing live.  Their debut album, Peace of Mind was released back in February. The first song that I featured on my blog, "Lost Days"  hit the top spot on the SNS 100 on April 26.   This week, it moves back up my playlist from #46 to #42.   I will be looking at the album for a follow-up track soon.

I was lucky that "Lost Days" came up as the second song after my arrival.  I was able to capture it on video:

The band is schedule to play one more gig here, in Somerville at Division Street Music on September 26, and then head to Massachusetts for gigs on October 1 and 2.

SCREEN STILL SUPREME:   ScreenAge's "Blue Eyed Addiction" remains at the  top of the SNS 100 playlist for a third week.   The  song continues to be infectious, and the band has again did  a shout-out to myself and my blog last week.   Again, a big "thank you" to the quartet!  It holds off another Jersey artist, Elise Farnsworth's "In The Morning Light" which still bullets in the #2 spot and is keeping pace.   Next week could be anybody's guess in that it will be a close race between the two songs, but surging also are Delta Spirit's "How About It" (6-4), Winnetka Bowling League's "Come to the Beach" (15-6) and Michael Kiwanuka's "You Ain't the Problem" (20-9).

A pretty good crop of adds this week.  While the general public probably knows Elle King for her big pop hit "Ex's & Oh's", as well as being the daughter of comedian Rob Schneider, her talents go beyond that one song.  In fact, that top 10 Hot 100 song only reached #2 on my list back in 2015, and was actually bettered by "Under The Influence", "Shame" and "Baby Outlaw", all of which hit the top spot on my list.    Her new song, "The Let Go", the lead single from her forthcoming third album In Isolation is a subtle change of pace, but nonetheless a great effort, garnering Top Debut honors.   Her performance is a little more understated than past efforts, but still manages to let out that raw emotion, especially during the choruses.  She definitely knows how to belt out a soulful song.    Could a 4th blog #1 be in the cards for her?    As of now, I would say "yes".

The next highest debut is somewhat of a surprising one.  Dan Croll, the English singer previously had one song make my playlist: 2013's "From Nowhere" from his debut album Sweet Disarray.  It peaked here at #13 but enjoyed a 30-week run on my chart.    His new one, "Away From Today", is from his third effort, Grand Plan, released last month.   With a horn-related intro, it then sequels into a mid-tempo soul and pop effort.  A full surround sound encompasses the song with many changes throughout.

Other adds include Surfer Blood, who landed in my top 20 back in 2011 with "Swim", with their latest, "Karen", an up-tempo surf-pop, post-punk confection; Pickwick, an indie-garage, R&B outfit from Seattle, with "Never Gonna Be Enough" which dates back to 2017.   Like The Mystery Lights' "21 and Counting" (this week's Top 20 Impact), I got this from the television show Shameless.   It is a rather eerie, haunting retro-pop ballad.  New Jersey rockers  Real Estate follow-up their blog #1 "Paper Cup" with "The Main Thing" from  their album of the same name is a rather up-beat pop-rocker.    Finally, indie-folkers The Avett Brothers return to the list with "Victory".  Their "Live and Die" reached my top 5 back in 2013.
