That Was the Year to End All Years: An SNS 2019 Overview; Mariah sets Record on Hot 100 (SNS week of 12/15/2019)

It is that time of the year again, as we look back over the past twelve months....

JANUARY:  It's a new year, and for the first time in a few years, I actually got my first blog out this month.    "High Hopes", by Panic! at the Disco, an  alternative band that has been around for quite a while, jumps to the #1 spot on my blog, but even more important, hits the top 5 on Billboard's anti-rock Hot 100, and number one on the pop airplay chart.  It was the latest rock "novelty" song (even though the band had a top ten hit eleven years earlier when it was okay to like the genre).    Unfortunately there wouldn't be any more real rock crossovers the rest of the year, and the song has topped the apparently staid "Rock Songs" chart for 48 weeks and running, after 82 weeks...….My friend Tom Corea (Bad Attitude, The Hounds of Winter) took his son TJ to see them in concert.........As this was (and still may be) the purported last year of blogging, I take a look as to how this final year may play out...…...The husband-and-wife duo Tennis has the top debut with "I Miss That Feeling", my first add from their already 15-month old EP We Can Die Happy.   Eleven months later, they'd have the Top Debut once again from a new set coming in 2020......Speaking of Bad Attitude, we mourn the passing of its lead singer, Jamie Heath, who had passed away in December 2018.....And, in the beginning of a soap opera of sorts, there's the possibility of not one, but TWO Woodstock festivals, as 2019 marks half a century since the legendary gathering at Yasgurs Farm....while the original site, now Bethel Woods Center for the Arts would be the logical staging area, Michael Lang, one of the original organizers, proposed to have it at the Watkins Glen speedway....the site of the 1973 Summer Jam...yeah, nothing like holding a revival concert at a venue famous for holding another famous one.  To be continued...…..finally, non music related, but a dear friend I knew since kindergarten, Armand Cistaro, passed away.   He was a blog reader, but more important, a great friend who was there for you, but also made you laugh a lot....he will be missed.

FEBRUARY:  It's Grammy time, and I pretty much turn my ear away.  I heard Brandi Carlile had a great performance, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers were there as well, but other than that, nothing I cared to see...….an interesting article notes that millennials recalled popular songs that were out before their time, over those during their formative years.  But go ahead with your "OK Boomers" every time we confront you with that obvious fact...…... It's Super Bowl time, and it seemed that no one wanted to perform at halftime...politics, ya know.   Finally, Adam Levine and Maroon 5 stepped up to the plate, after both Rihanna and Cardi B refused, due to the Colin Kaepernick situation .  He did a halfway decent job...but the best performance of that night had to go to the legendary Gladys Knight, who aced the National Anthem for the game, held in Atlanta, where she grew up...….while there was no Woodstock news, another important concert, Mountain Jam, announced its move from Hunter Mountain to Bethel Woods.   The festival, which would take place in June, would feature some cool acts like the Revivalists, The Big Takeover, Avett Brothers, as well as traditional acts like Gov't Mule and Willie Nelson...….Speaking of the Revivalists, the band has an SNS first as they have the top two songs on my playlist.  Break up the Revivalists!.....Apparently, the number "17" is very popular as no less than three songs with that title, occupy the SNS 100...….Peter Tork of the 1960's TV band, The Monkees, passes away.

Maroon 5, fronted by Adam Levine, performed at the halttime show at this year's Super Bowl.

MARCH:  2019 was the year of the movies honoring or inspired by classic rock artists.  Bohemian Rhapsody, centering on the life of its lead singer, the late Freddie Mercury is a huge hit, subsequent movies such as Rocketman (Elton John), Yesterday (The Beatles), and Blinded By the Light (Bruce Springsteen) would grace theaters this year......One of SNS's favorite bands, The Black Keys, return with their "Lets Rock" set and first single "Lo/Hi", after a five year hiatus...….One of my best blogs centered around a late 1960's band called Mortimer, which included my wife's cousin.    Little did I know they had almost hit the big time as they had met some of the Beatles and were signed by Apple Records, only to be let go of their contract by Allen Klein. Still, it was one of my most researched blog as I went thru archives of trade magazines to put the story together.   Their album (their second release) was finally released almost fifty years later......

Late 1960's band Mortimer, was the topic of a blog in March.

APRIL:  Probably the most successful band on my blog this decade was Fitz and the Tantrums, and they returned with a new single "123456" which would become their twelfth blog topper...….Wild Belle, another fave of mine, release their third album, which would be a disappointment...….In the cynical song department:  Jonas Brothers reunite after ten years and release a single "Sucker".  As it turned out, it wasn't half bad.  It would go top 3 on my blog, and the band would perform at the VMA awards in a remote from, of all places, The Stone Pony in Asbury Park.  Not exactly Southside Johnny, but...they ARE Jersey Boys...…..As for the continuing Woodstock 50 saga, it looks like, indeed Michael Lang would get his wish...Watkins Glen it is, as well as a cease-and-desist order for the original Bethel Woods concerts that were planned and promoted as the anniversary concerts.....in perhaps what would turn out to be a big waste of time for me, I break down all the planned acts at the various stages and days...…...In an effort to get back to the original intent of this blog, I take a look at the new Tame Impala song.     Readers aren't that thrilled...….A "country trap" song called "Old Town Road" by new rapper Lil Nas X, hits #1 on Billboard...I don't think anything of it...…..Legendary 60's pop/rock artist Tommy James, returns to the charts with a new album Alive...….In the "I'm feeling old" department:  I, having quit my hotel job, return to substitute teaching at the local high school, in a U.S. History class...the topic, Vietnam War the concurrent protests at home, complete with music by Creedence Clearwater Revival, Bob Dylan, James Brown, and others.  Yep.

MAY: In the continuing story of Woodstock 50, apparently the concert is now in doubt.   Seems that some of the sponsors and production companies "cancelled" the festival.   Lang denies that cancelation, saying the festival, now just three months away, will go on as scheduled, with new promoters...….Perhaps in anticipation of a trip to the Carolinas this month, I add a series of new "beach music" songs...four of them would hit my top 20....and the couple we visited showed me how to "shag"...….I look at the career of Bruce Springsteen as he continues to be visible this decade......WPLJ, the long time music station at 95.5 on the New York dial, comes to an end, with a weekend long retrospective of its history, from its album rock roots, on to the Top 40 era, and then to its Hot AC format, along with many of the jocks from all its formats and some of the bits from various morning shows....."Old Town Road" logs weeks 4 to 7 on the Hot 100 as by now, a remix featuring Billy Ray Cyrus' is now credited.   I still am ignoring it...…...

JUNE:  Apple comes out with a new iPod, and while many feel that is unnecessary to introduce a gadget that was popular over a decade ago, it's one I still use and I welcome it....I take a look at its advantages in 2019...….We lose two more musicians, Dr. John, and Leon Redbone, and despite their vastly different background, had a similar musical style...…..Lil Peep, a young hip-hop artist who overdosed last year and died, has a posthumous release, "I've Been Waiting", an indie pop song featuring ILoveMakonnen and Fall Out Boy.....I absolutely love it, and it hits my top spot ……. Probably my most infamous blog was, in an effort to keep track of current artists, was the one on Lana Del Rey, as she released a cover of Sublime's 90's alt-rock hit, "Doin' Time".    The blog was a bust, only garnering single-digit views...…...Another blog favorite, Nick Waterhouse, releases a new, self-titled album, and outdoes himself.  "I Feel An Urge Coming On" grabs the top spot.  But once again, nobody notices or cares...…."Old Town Road"is STILL atop the Billboard Hot 100 for 12 weeks as of the end of the month.  I finally add the song at a lowly #93.  I explain that it's "not bad at all" and that it's "worth a few weeks on my playlist".   O.....K.... ……………I take a look at the Beatles-inspired movie Yesterday...….."Lo/Hi" by The Black Keys makes its third jump to the top spot on the SNS 100.

Pennsylvania artist Shannon Marsyada releases her album Oceans, a project funded by Kickstarter.

JULY:   Shannon Marsyada releases her new album, Oceans, and I get a complementary copy for contributing via Kickstarter.   I review her career as well as the tracks off the new CD.   Apparently what I couldn't do with any other blog this year, I succeed with this tribute as I had received the most views of any entry this year, mostly from her Pennsylvania fan base.    You need to check her music out!...…..Stranger Things, the hit Netflix series, releases its Season 3; the show takes place in July 1985 and I point out the historical accuracies of the episodes, and in particular a song, "Never Ending Story" by Limahl that is sung by two of the characters in the final episode...….In the ongoing Woodstock 50 mess, the drama increased with just a month to go. Seems that Watkins Glen withdrew itself as the venue for missing a payment; Michael Lang and company now set their sites on a horse racing track in Auburn NY, even having a town meeting.   But that would also be a no-go and the concert is dangerously being close to being canceled...….."Kombucha" by Winnetka Bowling League, the alt-rock contingent headed by former EDM artist Matthew Koma, heads the top of my SNS 100 for three weeks...….."Old Town Road" is STILL #1 on Billboard; by month's end it had tied "One Sweet Day" and "Despacito" for the longest reign on the Hot 100, 16 weeks and counting.....Not wanting to miss history, I rush the song up the SNS 100, by month's end it jumps 19-2 just missing a record jump to the top...…...More Woodstock woes as ten artists and groups back out of the beleaguered festival, fast a sinking ship.

AUGUST:    Woodstock 50, after a proposed move to an amphitheater in Maryland fell apart, was mercifully canceled, thus giving Bethel Woods, the original festival site of the 1969 arts and music fair, the spotlight.   Several artists, either who performed there originally, were around in that era, and newer ones who perform in that style, were featured over the three days.  Radio station WXPN broadcasts the actual events, including announcements, as well as the music that happened during that weekend, fifty years prior...…..A couple who were pictured on the soundtrack album of the original festival, Bobbi Kelly and Nick Ercoline, are still together and were greeters to all those visiting Bethel Woods over the anniversary weekend...….."Old Town Road" smashes the Billboard Hot 100 this month with its 17th, 18th and 19th week at the top; the song hits my #1 spot for two weeks...….Helping matters, in a case of perfect timing, is that my wife Barbara had gotten tickets to see Billy Ray Cyrus perform at Skylands Park, a few months before.   While the place wasn't really packed---it's been quite awhile since Cyrus had a hit----it was a good concert, punctuated by a nine-minute version of "Old Town Road"; one of a few breaks Cyrus has had to stay relevant after his initial success 28 years prior.   It returns the song to the top of my SNS 100 for two more weeks...……Another "country trap" song,  "The Git Up" by Blanco Brown, the  object of many viral "challenges" dances, makes it to my top three, even though the song only wallows in the teens on the Billboard chart...….Tommy James releases a slow, acoustic version of his 1967 Shondells hit, "I Think We're Alone Now".  The song makes my top ten, putting the Cedar Grove NJ resident back in the pop spotlight...…..I take a look back at the original Woodstock festival, and its impact on music history...….It's my ninth anniversary doing Scenes 'n' Soundwaves. I take a look as why I decided to start this blog and why I may end it at the end of this year...….

Nick Ercoline and Bobbi Kelly, pictured on the Woodstock soundtrack, were still together and served as greeters during the 50th anniversary celebration at Bethel Woods, on the original site.

SEPTEMBER:   Another fave band of mine from this decade, Foster the People, scores on my list with "Imagination".  Again, nobody cares or notices...…...What they do care about are two more passings in the rock world:   Eddie Money, and Ric Ocasek, who both scored with many hits in the 70's and 80's (the latter with his band The Cars),  pass away...…….."Song of the Summer" honors go to "I've Been Waiting" on my blog, while in Billboard, it's a "no brainer"..."Old Town Road"... DUH!.....The song that knocked "Old Town Road" out of the top spot is unlikely teen singer Billie Eilish, which also tops the alternative chart.    Still, I have had a hard time trying to get into her music, and add "Bad Guy" begrudgingly.   But after about 20 listens, I think I actually like the song....

Billie Eilish was one of the breakthrough artists of 2019.

OCTOBER:  Fitz & the Tantrums release their fourth album, All the Feels... While the feeling is, indeed there, it's surrounded by too much EDM and rhythm which drowns out the sentiment.  As a result, the album fails to chart...…...Better news is for Wilco, who grab their first blog number one in eight years with "Love Is Everywhere (Beware)"...…..and two more rock passings: This time it's Ginger Baker of the classic psychedelic band Cream, and .38 Special and original Lynyrd Skynyrd member Larry Junstrom…….Having been successful with the blog on Shannon Marsyada, I do the same with local Jersey laurate Paul Czekaj, who had just released his first video in three years with "The Painter of the Sky".  Once again, the number of views goes through the roof...

NOVEMBER: With the continued erosion of the rock genre in popular music, I take a look at what went wrong, and how hip-hop, which arose from the ashes of disco, wound up kicking new rock's ass...….."Uptown Funk" grabs the top spot in Billboard's ranking of the top songs of the 2010's...….Women make their mark in the upper regions of my SNS 100, with Shannon Marsyada's "The Message" leading the way, but also spotlighting Molly Burch, Andreya Triana, and Delacey…...The American Music Awards are on, and I actually watch some of it.  It was pretty much the Taylor Swift show, and no current rock acts were on the show...no surprise there.....We go to see Mannheim Steamroller perform in Morristown.

DECEMBER:   The final month of the blog (?) begins with Michael Kiwanuka's "Hero" atop the leader board...….It's the holiday season, of course, and with it comes all the controversies.    Darlene Love, the legendary singer who has one of the memorable Christmas  songs of all time, with "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)", lashes out at NBC and the producers of the annual "Christmas At Rockefeller Center" holiday special, for snubbing her and her famous song (though covered by others invited to the show) after ten years...... Meanwhile, another show associated with that network, The Voice, featured two of its coaches---John Legend and Kelly Clarkson, covering the embattled standard, "Baby It's Cold Outside", with half the lyrics changed to make it more politically correct..   Despite that, many are not thrilled, including Deana Martin, whose father Dean Martin popularized the song sixty years ago...…..I take a look at a couple of songs that they should make movies out of, and reflect on the past nine and a half years of blogging....,,My blog hits the 300,000 view mark...…...and finally, "High Hopes" is still at the top of the Rock Songs chart.   The way things are going, it'll probably be there next year at this time too, by reasons of lack of competition.

MARIAH MAKES HISTORY:   Leave it to the charts to cause some uproar at the end of the year.   It's been an interesting year on the Billboard Hot 100, to say the least.   Of course, there's "Old Town Road' breaking the record for most weeks at the top of the chart, with 19, Ariana Grande with the top three songs back in March, the most songs at the top since The Beatles had the top five in April 1964.  Two Jersey artists, Halsey and Jonas Brothers, scored #1 songs, and Billie Eilish became the second youngest female to hit #1, as well as having the first song, "Bad Guy" to hit the top on both the Hot 100 and Alternative charts, in both cases, since Lorde did the trick with "Royals" five years prior.  "Bad Guy" also became the ninth song to stay in the top 10 for 30 weeks or more.  Taylor Swift set a record for the biggest jump on the Hot 100.....From #100 to #2 with "Me!" featuring Brendon Urie (of Panic! at the Disco), but never hit #1.

But just this week alone, two records were set.  Last week's #1 song, "Heartless" by The Weeknd, drops to 17, breaking a 45 year old record set by Billy Preston's "Nothing From Nothing", and tied the following week by Dionne Warwick and The Spinners' "Then Came You".

And the other record?

Mariah Carey's quarter-of-a-century old Christmas song, "All I Want For Christmas Is You", smashes several records on the Billboard Hot 100 this week.

Up until this week, it wasn't a great year for Mariah Carey.   Her holiday classic, "All I Want For Christmas is You", which seems to grow in popularity every year and which peaked at #3 last holiday season, set a dubious record for falling out of the Hot 100 the week of January 12, from that high a position.  Then there's "One Sweet Day", her duet with Boyz II Men which held a share of the Hot 100 most weeks at #1 record (along with "Despacito") until "Old Town Road" broke it.
Well, Mariah's got the last laugh this week, as "All I Want For Christmas Is You", hits the top spot, taking 35 weeks over a quarter of a century to do the trick.  That sets a record for the longest climb to the top; breaking the record by "Macarena (Bayside Boys Mix)", By Los Del Rio, which took 33 weeks to hit #1 in 1996.

The song is also the first holiday entry to hit #1 in sixty-one years.  You have go back to "The Chipmunk Song (Christmas Don't Be Late)" by The Chipmunks with David Seville, during the holiday season of 1958 to find another Christmas chart-topper.   In fairness, though, much of that gap was because of various changes in Billboard chart methodology.

From the inception of the Hot 100 in 1958, through the end of 1962, holiday songs were able to re-chart every year.   Now-standards like 'Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree" and "Jingle Bell Rock" would appear in the years following their release.  "The Chipmunk Song", for example, charted every year until 1962.     However, due to a change in methodology, Billboard banned holiday songs from charting on the Hot 100, instead creating a chart "Best Bets for Christmas" which ran from 1963 to 1972, thus popular songs released then never charted; now-classics duvh as John Lennon's "Happy Xmas (War is Over)", The Carpenters' "Merry Christmas Darling" or Jose Feliciano's "Feliz Navidad" never charted.     Beginning in 1973, they were able to chart again, but very few did, and if they did, it would be in the lower regions of the chart.   And, to be honest, much of the 1970's were rather lean years for commercial releases.   It wasn't until 1978 that we got another holiday entry in the upper regions of the chart, when The Eagles' take on "Please Come Home for Christmas" peaked at #18 that year.

The next big holiday song to hit the top 20 wasn't until 1984 when Band-Aid's charity "Do They Know It's Christmas" reached #14.  Billboard did reinstitute a Christmas singles chart briefly in the mid 80's, but the focus by then was more on albums.   Very few songs during the 80's were released as vinyl or cassette singles, thus the scarcity of chart presence; they would instead wind up on compilation albums.

In December 1991, Billboard changed its methodology to use point-of-sale methodology to track singles and monitored airplay on radio stations to base the charts on.   Still, very few hit the charts because they weren't available as singles.   One of them did:  Elmo & Patsy's 1979 novelty hit "Grandman Got Run Over By A Reindeer" finally reached the charts in 1997 thanks to a re-recording.  But it wasn't until the following year that Billboard, because of dwindling physical singles sales or record labels not releasing singles at all, that non single releases were permitted to chart.   In the next decade, with the advent of digital downloads, holiday songs started to chart, and Billboard also eliminated the recurrent rule:   Older songs can re-enter the Hot 100, but only if they had enough points to hit the top 50.    Thus, holiday songs, Carey's in particular, were finally able to chart. This became rampant in the 2010's with the advent of streaming as many holiday songs were heard that way, paving the way for not only Carey's song, but many other classics, to hit the charts again.

For example, on the current Hot 100 dated December 21, 2019, behind Carey's song, Brenda Lee's "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree" is right there at #3; Burl Ives' "A Holly Jolly Christmas" is #10, Bobby Helms' "Jingle Bell Rock" at #15, Andy Williams' "The Most Wonderful Time of the Year" at #20; Dean Martin's "Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow", #24; Wham's "Last Christmas", #26;  Nat King Cole's "Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting...)", #32;  Jose Feliciano's "Feliz Navidad", #34; The Ronettes' "Sleigh Ride" #37, Gene Autry's "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer", #38;  and Williams' "Happy Holiday/The Holiday Season",  #43.   There are two newly released songs on the chart this year thus far, Taylor Swift's "Christmas Tree Farm", and Jonas Brothers' "Like It's Christmas" at #59 and #61, respectively.   I add the Swift title this week, while the Jonases have the highest holiday charter on my list this week, at #13.

Interestingly enough, "Baby It's Cold Outside"---neither the Dean Martin classic, nor the John Legend/Kelly Clarkson revamp discussed last week, are on the Hot 100, although they could be on the specialty/genre specific charts.   Keep in mind, however there are still a couple of chart weeks left in the year, which no doubt, songs may still rise or debut.

Back to Mariah Carey.   The success of her holiday song enables her to set more records.   It is her 19th #1 song, breaking a tie with Elvis Presley for second place, and is just one behind The Beatles' record of 20.   And finally, the song becomes Carey's 80th cumulative chart week of all her number ones, breaking Presley's record of 79. No doubt she'll add at least another one next week.

But there is one cautionary note:  After the holidays are over, will the song drop completely off the chart from the top spot, similar to her exit last year from #3, setting another, dubious record?

We shall see.

THE FINAL FLING:   Nine years and four months ago, my first list of what would eventually be called, "Scenes 'n' Soundwaves 100", which is my currents playlist, was published.  The first number one, on August 23, 2010 was "Tighten Up" by the Black Keys, which held the top spot for the first four weeks.   The 159th...and final...number one on my blog is "Hero" by Michael Kiwanuka, which is in its third week at the top.  The top four songs are still advancing, and the entire top 10 is strong.

It looks like Jonas Brothers' "Like It's Christmas" will be the top song of the holiday season 2019 as it moves up to #13, ahead of Alessia Cara's "Make It To Christmas" at #25.  As it is my final blog, I only add one new song, the holiday entry from Taylor Swift, "Christmas Tree Farm".   It has that bouncy melodic feel to it, similar to other recent holiday releases.    It's pretty much all been done, but Swift, who has gotten awards for her work this decade, but who, in my opinion, has seen her rather "conform" to the current pop of the day, deserves one more entry; when she was primarily a country artist, I had added many of her songs at the beginning of my blog era.

As I have said, this is my final weekly blog.    There are still more to come, however.  Next,  I will be posting my latest edition of my Christmas Top 100, which I am counting down on my Facebook timeline; followed by my already-computed Top 100 of 2019, and finally, my favorite songs of the 2010's and my personal "chart records" over that span.  While I intend on then taking a break from the blog, neither it, nor my listening to new music will go away.   My SNS 100 will continue into the 2020's but it will be kept to myself unless someone wants it, however, it's very apparent that since nobody really follows it or cares about my "chart positions", it doesn't make any sense to keep posting it; in fact I am surprised I kept it going for this long.    I will keep it running for my own reference as I track which new music to listen to.    I will share music with anyone who cares to listen; I am already exchanging indie artists with a friend.    Also I will explore the world of streaming, as I probably have spent $4000 total on downloaded songs these past ten years.   I will continue to write a blog or two, but it will usually involve older music, such as an artist's passing, and I will also start a project to review a particular year, starting with 1964 and working forward.

A big thank you to all those who have followed my "exploring the world of music---or at least my take on it".
