Still Some Exciting New Music (SNS week of 11/3/2019)

Having drifted a week behind, this will be a "filler" blog (i.e., not posted on Facebook), as the blog dated 11/10 will (hopefully) publish later this week.

Love Fame Tragedy holds at the top for a second week, with "My Cheating Heart",Matthew Murphy's side project apart from his worth with The Wombats.   His band had a #3 blog hit back in 2011 with "Toyko (Vampires and Wolves)", but his solo project leads for a second week.   In the runner-up spot is Shannon Marsyada's "The Message" from her album Oceans.  It is still gaining points and has an excellent chance for her second number one.    It swaps places with "Love is Everywhere (Beware)" by Wilco.   But aside from that switch, the rest of the top 10 hold their positions as there was a bit of a lull in really likeable music the last few weeks or so.

That shouldn't last beyond this week though.  While Middle Kids, Delacey and ScreenAge are advancing towards the top ten, there are two big movers in the SNS 100 that have captured my ears in the last couple of weeks: Molly Burch and Michael Kiwanuka, who have the Impact and Mover awards this week.

Burch's haunting yet beautiful ballad "Only One", coming on like a female Chris Isaak (of "Wicked Game" fame), moves 50-16 this week; while Kiwanuka rebounds after the disappointing "Money" with the very melodic and upbeat "Hero" (74-35).

Another strong song which is the Top Debut this week is the new one by The Griswolds, "Nice to Meet Ya".  The Sydney, Australian three-piece band has been on my blog several times before, but their highest position here to date was the #17 "Feels So Right" in 2017.   This one is a nice, good-timely poppy, uptempo, jangly guitar-oriented tour de force that has caught on immediately with me, and lands at #63.

The remainder of the debuts are all by acts that have invaded the upper part of my list before.  They include probably two of my favorite country acts, Blake Shelton and Thomas Rhett; Wilco's follow-up to their SNS #1, with "Everyone Hides"; Coldplay, back after an almost four year hiatus with "Orphans"; Big Thief, who hit top 20 last year with "Shark Smile", returns with "Not", and this week's Billboard Hot 100 #1 song, Selena Gomez's "Lost You to Love Me", which is purported about her ex, Justin Bieber.   Ms. Gomez had a #3 blog hit in late 2015 with "Same Old Love", but took a three year hiatus for some "soul searching" and perhaps to deal with her lupus battle and gaining weight.    I've always liked her, and this one is a worthy new song.   Combined with last week's Billboard chart-topper, Lewis Capaldi's "Someone You Loved" (47-31 this week), it's nice to see two decent pop songs at the top of the national chart, something sorely needed.   Of course, it is WAY too early to count this as a trend.

LATE BLOOMERS:   As you know, my list is based mostly on my liking songs, with some input from friends who post these songs on social media.    I usually listen to them via iTunes library and my iPod, but with one hundred current songs, I usually don't have the time to listen to them every week.   I usually listen to my top 20, then mix up for the rest of the songs.  As a result some rarely get heard, thus wander around the lower parts of my blog chart.  I don't want to drop them all together as sometimes it takes a listen or two (or three) to like a song, and some of these grow on me.    Such as the case with some slow risers:   "I'm In Love" by Mini Mansions bullets 53-45 in its 15th week, Jersey girl Christina Alessi's "The Truth is Upon Us" gains a bullet in its 13th week (65-55); Sleater-Kinney, which drops 30-40 this week with the ironically-titled "Hurry on Home", took 16 weeks to hit its peak last week.

As they say, "slow and steady" wins the race.
