Break Up the Revivalists (SNS week of 2/17/2019)

Note to my readers:  As you might know, I  have not been feeling good the past couple of weeks, as an infection came on.    I was out of commission for a couple days and still haven't felt back to normal.   It is March 4th and am feeling considerable better to do a blog.    In the past, I usually "combine" weeks, but the music business doesn't sleep.   Songs that can be popular one week can take a dip to the next.     I will, in subsequent weeks, cover the pertinent music that is going on, including the passing of Peter Tork of the Monkees.   However, this week (February 17) there are two phenomena that took place with the SNS 100.

For the first time in the almost nine years of my blog, one act has the top two songs on my blog playlist, also known at the SNS 100.    The Revivalists, who, aside from some Alternative and Triple-A play, aren't even on the pop map, now have the top two songs on my list.   It's also the first time that a song has displaced another one by the same act.  "Change", the third single by The Revivalists from their album Take Good Care, displaces "You and I", which was the second single, from the top spot.  "All My Friends", the first single, finally leaves the top 20, having also been at the top.

The three number one songs also put the Revivalists in an elite group:  Artists who have pulled three songs from one album.    Only Adele's 21 set , and Fitz & the Tantrums' More Than Just a Dream as well as their eponymous third album have pulled three (or more) singles.     The Revivalists also join Adele, and the Tantrums, as well as Rachel Allyn to have three or more consecutive songs reach the  top.

Unfortunately, with the current pop climate getting worse by the week, you probably won't see any crossover by the New Orleans band anytime soon.   The band has made the Hot 100 only once: "Wish I Knew You", from their debut Men Amongst Mountains, reached #84 there in 2016.   That song also reached #7 here on SNS.

JUST SEVENTEEN:   Four new entries this week, all by artists who have been here before.   Sharon Van Etten, who I just found out hails from Belleville, NJ, follows her "Comeback Kid" (still in the top 20), with her latest, "Seventeen" from her current album Remind Me Tomorrow, which comes in at #60.   With that entry, there are now three songs titled "Seventeen" (or "17") on my SNS 100 listening.    Greeting Committee's "17" now sits as #35 after peaking  at #7 and has been on the list....you guessed it....17 weeks.   Welles' 'Seventeen" moves up to #66 in its fourth week.

Songs with "teens' in the title have always been popular through popular music, from the opening lines of The Beatles' "I Saw Her Standing There" ("she was just seventeen").   While not as popular as "sixteen", seventeen has widely been mentioned in song.   Usually it's either introspective, such as the Van Etten song (as well as Janis Ian's classic "At Seventeen" from 1975), or a lament to underaged females, such as Winger's "Seventeen" or The Raiders "Just Seventeen".  As far as the Welles song, which sounds a lot like Radiohead's "Creep", it's hard to pinpoint what it's all about, but based on the video is seems like the protagonists is trying to free her from a domineering father.      The Greeting Committee's song seems to be about a guy, age 17, whose parents, after constant falling outs want to throw him out of the house.

If any of you have better interpretations of the Van Etten, Welles or Greeting Committee's songs, feel free to respond!

Also debuting this week or the latest from Broken Bells ("Shelter"), The Decemberists ("Traveling On") and a politically-charged entry from Gary Clark, Jr ("This Land").
