KUNGS, featuring Cookin' on 3 Burners has the unlikely number one song this week on my playlist. The French-born DJ, born Valentin Brunel released this back in 2016, but just a little over a month ago, I heard it piped in down the shore at Martells Tiki Bar in Point Pleasant Beach. In this day and age when radio is shunning anything of quality, this is pretty much where I get my inspiration for new music---wherever I happened to be at a particular place in time. "This Girl" ends the three week run of Neko Case's "Bad Luck". That song drops to number 3. Florence + the Machine's '"Hunger" advances from 4 to 2; the Brit outfit led by Florence Welch is one notch away from its four SNS charttopper. Cigarettes After Sex's "Apocalypse", the follow-up to "K" advances from 24-13. Smaller moves within the top 20 include Tennis' "My Emotions are Binding", Hegazy's "Smolder", and Iration's "Press Play"; that outfit joins The Big Takeover's "Rainboots" (10-8) as the reggae songs in the upper echelon. Zedd's "The Middle", featuring Maren Morris and Grey, holds at 19, maintaining its bullet, joining Camilla Cabello's "Never Be the Same" (14-15) as pop crossovers in the top 20.
The Top Debut is the new one from St. Paul & the Broken Bones, "Apollo", from their forthcoming album, "Sea Of Noise". The Birmingham soul outfit previous albums yielded four SNS top 20 hits, including the #1 "Call Me". The new song doesn't disappoint and should continue their street. It really cooks and the brass work continues to impress. Definitely top ten material. Their forthcoming album is Young Sick Camellia, due out next month. Also debuting are Portugal. The Man, Franz Ferdinand and St. Vincent, following up their recent successes here.
