Elsewhere, Fitz & the Tantrums get their 16th top 10 as "Fool" jumps to #8. As I discussed a couple weeks back, the band has gone out on a limb and vied for commercial success. While I have stayed with the song--it's catchy and a bit goofy--radio has not embraced it. Alternative radio, which netted the band two number one's from their second album More Than Just a Dream, didn't even add the song to their playlists. As the saying goes, in an effort to win new fans, they lost the old ones. The question is, will I stay on board? "Fool" makes it to #8 in its fourth week, but will it continue their string of #1's which is six in a row? We shall see. Meanwhile, Foxygen gets its sixth top 20 as "On Lankershim" enters at #17. Saint Motel gets its third in the upper echelon via "Sweet Talk".
Seven debuts this week, all rather low, headed by Electric Guest's "Oh Devil" and it's another palatable effort for the LA indie band. I also add Foster the People's intended first single from their third effort Sacred Hearts Club. Like Fitz and the Tantrums, the band was selling out in an effort to duplicate their "Pumped Up Kicks" pop hit of six years ago, but again, they are falling short. That album only debuts on the Billboard 200 at #47--a big comedown from the top 10 status of their first two sets. Will the band get their eighth top 20 here at SNS? That remains to be seen, but again, selling out in this fickle day and age, just alienates those who supported you in the first place, because your music was unique. This, my friend, is what's wrong with the music industry in the 2010's.
Kjband has released their latest album Best Kept Secret, with the title track entering at #89. Ken and company's previous album, Noise, yielded the top 10 "Waves". Barns Courtney returns with "Golden Dandelions"; his "Fire" reached #12 on SNS last year. Right behind is Milky Chance's follow-up to "Cocoon", with "Blossom". Another LA indie band, The Record Company is next with "Baby I'm Broken", their SNS debut, and as mentioned last week, I add Linkin Park's first single off their latest, "Heavy", a hip-hop / rock hybrid that features Kiiara, and sung by the late Chester Bennington.
