Calvin Harris has the highest new entry onto the top 20 with "My Way", which breaks a mini-slump for him. He had three consecutive top 10's from his previous album, but a slight departure from his usual style saw his last couple of released stall in the middle of the chart. Billy Spanton Band returns to the top 20 as "Shake Your Soul" continues its resurgence in the wake of keyboardist and friend Ron Pietranowicz's passing.
Rihanna has the big mover on the list with "Love on the Brain" (78-40). The Knocks, already moving up with "I Wish", featuring Matthew Koma (44-33) are back with "Purple Eyes" which features Phoebe Ryan, debuting at #74. This debut means that we have sort of a "community" with Matthew Koma, Phoebe Ryan, The Chainsmokers and The Knocks having multiple entries on the list, with others being featured artists. The Chainsmokers have three songs, one featuring Ryan, who now has three as well. She is also featured on one of the new Knocks songs, one of which also features Koma, who has a solo song as well. Got that?
We have our second holiday song debuting on the list,; that would be "Here We Come A Wassailing" by a band called Under the Streetlamp. The song actually is from a 2012 album. Normally, holiday songs are limited to the year they are released. However, I've been hearing it on Sirius XM's "Holly" channel, and since I haven't heard the song before this year, I will make an exception. Any similarities to "Rock This Town" by the Stray Cats was purely intentional; but it surely is infectious.
Also entering this week are Bishop Brigg's "Wild Horses", her follow-up to "River"; and Milky Chance's "Cocoon".
My next blog will be the last new one of the year and possibly for good and will cover December 11 and 18th. I will then cover my annual top 100 of 2016. It was an unusual year for music that I listened to, as many of the year-end lists, as well as American Music winners and Grammy nominations are much different from what I was listening to this year.
