But this one is totally dedicated to the best, in my opinion, music that I listened to from August of 2010, when I started this blog, to July 2015. I had posted this list as a Facebook note last week, so perhaps the music itself isn't such a surprise. But, as I do with my weekly SNS 100, there are links to mostly videos what you can enjoy and relive. (Note: for my weekly SNS 100, scroll down to the bottom as it is there this week, but my emphasis today is looking back at the past five years).
TOP OF THE LEAGUE: So, what about the list? Well, if you are a Fitz & the Tantrums fan, you will relish this page. Seven songs on the list, including five in the top 30, and the number one song, "Out of My League". I think it's a great choice for the top spot as, for me, it defined an era. Friends loved it, and it was coming off an album that I had discovered before many of my friends did, thus for me, the expectations were great, and were delivered. The song spent seven weeks at the top, and stayed on my list for a record 63 weeks, debuting in early March of 2013, not dropping off until the start of the following summer. It had all the ingredients of a smash: soulfulness, sentimentality, and of course great musicianship. The only thing it didn't have was chart success as the song didn't make the Billboard Hot 100, its crime being that of a rock song. But it did grace the top of the Alternative chart, the format I listen to the most (along with Triple-A).
Following that song in the number two position was probably one that nobody ever heard of, as it didn't make any chart. But it did get airplay on Vermont's WEQX and just made the bottom of that station's top 102.7 of 2013. That would be "Keep You" by the reggae-influenced brother-and-sister duo Wild Belle. Part of the reason for its high ranking is that it was slowly climbing my blog list but the song really grew on me. It took almost half a year to top my chart, and it stayed there for six weeks. It also lasted 54 weeks on my SNS 100, second only to "More Than Just A Dream". Wild Belle also had a second entry, at #75 with its follow-up "Backslider".
Probably the definitive choice for anyone's number one song in the first half of the 2010's, could be Adele's "Rolling In the Deep". It was definitely the most-played song on my iPod, and the memories of me playing it over and over upon it coming out in December of 2010 as I was heading to my company's Holiday Party is persistent. Like the Tantrums' song, it was new music from an artist I really got into their last time out, in this case being 2008's 19 set. It rose to the top of my charts months before everyone else got into it. It ranks at #3 on my list. She had a lot of songs from her 21 set make my SNS 100, including two others at the top, but alas, this is the only one to get the anniversary honors.
Perhaps in testament to some great bands and artists that have appeared in recent years, many of them have multiple appearances on the list, not an easy task as I had listened to over two thousand songs between the start and now. Aside from Fitz & the Tantrums and Wild Belle, others who appear more than one include: fun, with two songs, plus another that features lead singer Nate Ruess; neo-garage band The Satelliters with two entries; Grace Potter & the Nocturnals, Golden Void and The Black Keys, two big faves, have three apiece. Florence + the Machine has two, as does Capital Cities.
Pop music smashes, although second in listening pleasure to alternative rock, also abound. Led by Pink, with three entries, some songs that have topped the pop charts (and referenced in the related culture) are included here. They include Lorde's "Royals", Pharrell Williams' "Happy", Robin Thicke's "Blurred Lines", and Ellie Goulding's "Lights".
I have also given the local, unsigned artists and friends who just play for the love if it, some time. More on them on my next blog, but Rachel Allyn leads this category with three songs on the list; also included here is Paul Czekaj, both Omnia and Leila Hegazy, and The Hounds of Winter, plus two bands I heard at festivals: Shannon Marsyada Trio, and The Big Takeover.
Check out the lists, click on the links and replay your memories of the past five years!

(August 2010 to July 2015)
BACK TO THE CURRENTS: Beck assumes the top position for a second week on my current SNS 100, but a familiar band, Fitz & the Tantrums is right there at #2. It's a testament to their More Than Just A Dream set that I'm still into playing songs from it. Five of those songs are listed above; and this is the sixth one. Four of those have hit the top, and the one that didn't, "6 AM" which rose to #3 is still on the list after 47 weeks, the third most long-running song since the start of my blog. The Foals and I Am Dynamite make big strides into the top 20, but the big mover is retro-soul singer Leon Bridges with a huge jump with "Coming Home". The top debut is by a Northern Irish teenage female singer called Soak (real name Bridie Monds-Watson), with "Sea Creatures". It's from her debut album Before We Forgot How To Dream.
