Moments in Time (SNS 3/23-3/30/2014)

MOVING AROUND:  A few weeks back, I remarked about how many people we grew up listening to or watching are no longer around.    One case in point that I threw out there was the "retirement" of Scott Shannon, longtime top 40 DJ in New York City, first creating the Z-Morning Zoo on WHTZ, "Z-100" and later moving to WPLJ, and forming the "Big Show with Scott & Todd (Pettingill)" and staying with it for 23 years.

Then, all of a sudden, Shannon announced his retirement from 'PLJ, and presumable, radio.   Well, as it turned out, he didn't retire; he just moved elsewhere on the dial, winding up at WCBS-FM, 101.1 FM, the former "oldies" station, now labeled as "Classic Hits" from the mid 1960's thru the 1980's.    Like many DJ's who have graced New York broadcast history going to that legendary station when it focused on fifties and sixties music (think Harry Harrison, Dan Ingram, and "Cousin Brucie" Morrow), it's now Shannon's turn, going back to his 80's roots from Z-100.

The question is though, Shannon's WPLJ, was an adult top 40 radio station playing mostly current hits and being relevant, and during the morning show would interject current pop culturer events going on which geled with the music being played.    But, with the newest music on his new station still 24 years ago, can he still do that?     Like the legendary jocks before him, is he no longer relevant when it comes to anything new?  I've caught his show a few times on his new station, and he has brought some of his cohorts from the 'PLJ over, and it's still a good show.   Perhaps the music, after all, is still the backdrop.

WHAT'S NEW:   My blog has often dealt with the past, but it's really about the new music and I really haven't talked too much lately about what I'm listening to.   As always, scroll down to my SNS chart, where you'll see what is gracing my currents playlist.  But there's some standouts.

Haim, "Forever".  This one popped up last fall on WFUV's "The Alternate Side" top 20.  Then my good friend Laura Whelan mentioned this band; I believe they played one of the Shore bars, the Stone Pony, perhaps?     The song is infectious, and now I've been hearing it on some commercials for Target, which is keeping the song in my top 10 for awhile.  It's #9 currently. The song goes back to 2012 when it was released as the first single from their debut album Days are Gone.  Like much music in this genre, it has taken a while to catch on, but in my opinion it has.   The song grows on me by the week, and I can see how Laura likes it as well.   Terminal 5 in New York on May 10 and 11 is where you'll want to catch this band, which, takes their name form the suname of three of their sisters.  Incidentally, the fourth member, the only male, is Dash Hutton son of Danny Hutton of Three Dog Night fame, so there is musical pedigree here.

Avicii, "Hey Brother".  I've seen many of my Facebook friends post this one.    This is the follow-up to the singer/songwriter's "Wake Me Up" hit from last fall; it hit #24 on SNS and #4 on the Billboard Hot 100.  The follow-up is in sort of the same vein.    I like it better, if that's possible.   It combines the indie folk most recently popularized by bands like Mumford & Sons, with a bit of electronica, to make an interesting mix of things.  After being stagnant in the lower reaches of my chart, it jumps from #74 to 54 this week.  A winner.

No, "Leave the Door Wide Open".  This one was a recent Brian Sniatkowski Song of the Week and it's easy to see why.  Get by the name of the band first as this is not really an alternative to the classic rock band Yes.   It is more comparable to bands like The National and a favorite of mine, Interpol, as Brian points out.   A bit more squarely rhythmic than Interpol's rocking best, but it climaxes towards the end of the song.   One worth tracking, for sure.  The song debuts at #76 this week.

Lucius, "Turn It Around".   This is another 'late bloomer' that got lost int he holiday rush, and that it has taken me awhile to warm up to.   But warm up it has.  This is an exciting record, with sixties girl-group pop combined with early 1980's new wave, but very current in the ongoing  Brooklyn music scene.    The five piece band is led by vocalists Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig.   As I found out, if you're ever in a new music rut, put this song on.   It'll make you realize there's a lot out there to live for.   Their first full length album where this comes from is Wildewoman.   They will be part of the lineup at the Governor's Ball on Randall's Island, sharing the bill with the likes of Foster the People, Vampire Weekend, The Strokes and Phoenix.
