Well, to be honest, you'd be wrong. Fact is that I haven't been listening too much, if at all. And there are many, many reasons for that. My last blog was February 9, when I reminisced about the Beatles first coming to America. Well, since then, we've been in the polar freeze weather-wise. While this skier would have welcomed all this weather not too long ago, my heart just wasn't in it this season. Maybe too much of a good thing? Maybe a dark, desolate feeling, you know, the "Seasonal Affective Disorder". Add to that some health tests that triggered off some concern, and well, you just want to crawl into a corner and sleep in the warmth and comfort of your house. And finally, there really hasn't been any noteworthy new music to listen to anyway. Would this blog, after three and a half years, finally fall into oblivion? After all, I'm lucky to drudge up even a like or two with my new music posts these days.
Well, a few things have happened lately. Although it hasn't warmed up, even well into March now, it hasn't snowed significantly in the past two weeks, although mounds of it are still in my lawn. It's now getting lighter earlier, and getting dark later. And my health tests? One came out negative, the other showed an inflammation, but thank goodness, no cancer. Whew!
But then again, there's the music. Haven't updated the iPod with my SNS 100 list in over a month. And the songs I listen to, for the most part, are so uninspiring. In face, only two really stood out: Pharrell Williams' "Happy", by virtue of hearing it on TV in the news, or the recent Oscar telecast, or the fact that it's #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Let's face it; Pharrell, who was featured on two big hits of 2013, "Get Lucky" and "Blurred Lines", him and his Smokey Bear hat, is as hot as you can be. And "Happy" is a great pop song. It debuts high at #37.
The Olympics took place last month, and in the middle of it, Jimmy Fallon debuted his version of The Tonight Show, which featured U2 playing their new single "Invisible". I have, for the most part, been a fan of U2 since they broke through in 1983 with "New Year's Day" from their War album. They have gone thru many changes, some great, some not so. Although hardly cutting-edge these days, they still add freshness to rock and roll, which in this day of inspired pop music, is a plus. Not ground breaking, but a welcome change. "Invisible" enters at #83 this week.
As for worthwhile new bands, I point to Temples and Hospitality. With the scarcity of new worthwhile music, I've added two songs apiece by these bands. Temples is at #76 and 93, while Hospitality is at #60 and 77. To be honest, most of the other stuff that's been added in the last couple months is hardly earth shattering. But then again, when you've been away....
WHAT DO I DO? So, now the question becomes, so I keep this blog up? I've gone through stretches in the 21st century before no listening to anything new; oldies keep permeating my brain. And yes, great memories of those timeless songs. But I also remember songs over the last three and a half years playing a part of the events and friends that I've been in contact with as well.
And, with my blog recently garnering its 14,000th hit recently, it's time to labor on. Or at least attempt to. I need to do a better job of seeking out new music that I would love, regardless whether it's played on the radio or not. And then listen to it, faithfully, and sharing it with you. Hopefully, in the ensuing weeks, I'll get back into it, offer fresh stuff for listening as well. My friends have supported me every time I thought about discontinuing this, and I just keep on keeping on. Hopefully with the advent of spring, the journey will continue.
MY SNS: This week's chart encompasses three weeks from the last one on February 9. Capital Cities' "Kangaroo Court", it's follow-up to the Billboard Top 10 "Safe and Sound", but in my opinion a much better song but sadly didn't chart, rises to the top, replacing Fitz and the Tantrum's "The Walker" , which logged three weeks at the top, the last two on the frozen chart during the two weeks I missed. And, "Out of My League" starts it's second consecutive year on the chart, it actually moves up in its 52nd week!! But that, along with Wild Belle's "Keep You" (the top two songs of 2013), in its 49th week, has a negative connotation: It means nothing exciting has replaced it.
Hopefully that will soon change.
