Late to the Party? (SNS 10/6 & 10/13/2013)

Growing up, a majority of the music you heard on the radio was current.  Chances are, it was a hit.  Sure, you'd here a "solid gold" tune from time to time, but that was probably when the record just fell off the charts...a far cry from the "oldies" that are five, ten, twenty, hell, even fifth years old now.    But if you were into a record, say, three months after it fell off the chart, you would be considered "square", or at least "behind the times".    Passe.  Not what's in right now.

Fast forward to the present, where songs on the radio stay there for months, even years.    What was popular several months ago is probably still hot now.   Or is it?    Anybody remember one year ago when everyone was doing "Gangnam Style"?   What happened to that?   For that matter, where did the "Harlem Shake" go?    Now the "thing" is "Twerking", although to my knowledge there isn't a song that celebrates this latest move (although its perfector, Miley Cyrus seems to be tearing up the charts, but that's a story for another day).

I bring this up because on my latest SNS chart, "Blurred Lines", by Robin Thicke, Cyrus' accomplice during that infamous VMA performance, moves from #8 to #6 this week, and dag nabbit, the damn song is going thru my head.    It's sure to hit my top five, and who knows, even get to the top.    One problem though.    The song topped the national charts this past summer.    In fact, Billboard named it the "song of the summer" for 2013.     Last we looked, we're well into fall.    The song is still in Billboard's top 10, so I guess it's still "cool" to get into this song.

Still, all this goes to show whether it's advantageous to get into a song after everyone else.    That's happened a lot to me lately; one needs to look at my chart to figure that out.    Now of course, the pop stuff I'm late on anyway, since alternative music I look at first.     Also in the top 20, Bruno Mars' "Treasure", already peaked nationally, moves to #16 on my list; a similar situation also occurred earlier this year when "Locked Out of Heaven" made my top 3 a couple months after everyone else heard the song.

But it's some of the rock stuff that I'm embarrassed to be 'behind the times'.   Sure, "Out of My League", the current #1 Alternative song, topped my chart way back in March, but what about Capital Cities?   Lorde?  heck, let's even bring up "Radioactive" by Imagine Dragons.  Again.   and maybe you can throw Avicii into the equation while we're at it.  Well, Capital Cities' "Safe and Sound" I added last year, only got it to #48 and dropped off after 9 weeks.    And then I just forgot about it.  Next thing you know, it's in the top 10 nationally.    As for "Radioactive", it's been at the top forever, but it never made my top 40.  In fact, the #43 on this week's chart is its peak.  Oh, and it's been on the chart for 44 weeks (45 actually as the chart is held a second week).  That ties the all time record set by Foster the People's "Pumped Up Kicks".    Well, if it makes things any better, it's still in the top 20 nationally after 59 weeks; it needs 13 to break Billboard's all time record set by "I'm Yours" by Jason Mraz.  So I have at least that going for me.      Oh, and "Royals", the current #1 national song, does hit my top 20, so I'm not THAT far behind.     "Safe and Sound" re-enters at #77, and I actually like this one.

Moral of the story:  a good song is a good song, no matter when you listen to it.

NEW AND NOTWORTHY:   Those songs from SNS faves of the past came out recently; headed by the new one from Those Darlins, "Optimist" at #65.    Of course, they had one of my favorites from last year, "Screws Get Loose", my #2 song of 2012.    Since then, the complexion of the band has changed somewhat.   Kelley Anderson had left the Nashville outfit around the time Screws was released; she was replaced by a male, bassist Adrian Barrera. The new album Blur the Line (an answer to Robin Thicke, perhaps?) came out on October 1.   The track I'm featuring fist is "Optimist", although singles such as "In the Wilderness" and the title track have also been released, I'll decide in subsequent weeks.    More overtly punk and not quite as soulful than "Screws", "Optimist" is a persistent song, and has all the attributes for a rocker.    Not a bad start to the new effort.

The Killers were the hit of the holiday season last year with their annual Christmas single, "I Feel it In My Bones".  They have a new release as "Shot at the Night" comes in at #87.  It's from a new greatest hits set, "Direct Hits".   The Las Vegas band, still known primarily in the pop world for "Mr. Birghtside" their debut top 10 hit from their first album "Hot Fuss", expect the hits set to be released on November 11.    Very mid-tempo synth-driven, but still worthy of a listen.   The band still has something to say.

MORE THAN JUST A RECORD:   The new number one song is "Keeping an Eye Out" by Fitz and the Tantrums, a cut from their latest More Than Just a Dream set.    The album track (not a single) because their fourth song to top my chart, tying Rachel Allyn for the most chart toppers.      Meanwhile, "Out of My League" is still number 1 on the Billboard Alternative Chart, and is climbing the Adult Top 40 list in that publication.   That song has been enjoying a bit of a resurgence on my list as a result.   The band has been doing the talk show circuit still, appearing on Ellen DeGeneres and Conan's show recently.   No word on any new singles released, although friend Tom Corea posted the song "The Walker" this past week.    Glad to see others take to this band.   Of course we are nearing the third anniversary of me adding "MoneyGrabber".

One party I was early to.
