Unearthing the Indies (SNS 8/4/2013)

PUMPING OUT:   As I try and catch up to the current, I kind of wonder what's happened to the musical outlets, especially those for indie and alternative music.     Yes, I know pop music is popular as ever (when is it not?  After all "pop" is short for popular, right? )     Two sites that I have referred to in the past which have seem to go dormant are RCRD LBL and Indie Music Reviewer.     RCRD LBL I had depended on for some great new, fresh music while becoming somewhat of a throwback to simpler times.    Just listen to The Veils, Golden Void, Foxygen or Wild Belle and you'll know what I mean.    Some of those, I've gotten from friends, but many came from RCRD LBL, which was a site that you could download legally free music.   But a recent look at the site reveals there is nothing new since May 30.   What happened?   I knew the trend in the last several years was to move away from free downloads, and towards streaming.   Streaming seems to be the new way to purchase or have access to music.   I still prefer to buy my mp3's (or at least get them free from an authorized band website or other promotional place).    But regardless, it does introduce bands that I probably would never have heard about.   And with rock music--and that includes the established bands--rarely being able to be heard on terrestrial radio, much less anything more obscure, you need to find these outlets.

Indie Music Reviewer was another website where you could subscribe to get emails containing links to new music to try out.   Again it was for free.    Well, I checked this out, and again--nothing new since the beginning of July.     So it's back to the drawing board.  There are many new bands to be heard, and I will continue to search for outlets for new bands, because frankly, a lot of the stuff I near nowadays--and that includes songs in the top 10 on the Alternative Chart, have left a lot to be desired.   Let's hope the tide turns once again.

SPOTLIGHT:  Let's focus on the three top debuts.    If you remember last week, I picked out "Dear Prudential", the Beatles' classic as the new, third  featured track from Rachel Allyn's album Do It Yourself.  Leila Hegazy's Looking Glass, which also had two tracks make my top 10, I have now plucked a third song from.    Like her twin sister Omnia, she will now use her last name professionally.    The song is "The Reason Why".    I think with this track, Leila has cemented her own style.    Pop with a jazz flair to this one, as it moves mid-tempo.     Easy listening for sure, Ms. Hegazy definitely has the talent and definitely deserves to be heard.    I also love how the guitar comes in halfway through.   This is a great song to have on in the background as well as to listen to it directly.    I could see her doing a nice jam to this in live concerts.

I mentioned earlier about new bands while due to the inactive sites referred to above, have been cut off, but I did catch this one from Indie Music Reviewer.   That would be "How Do You Know, by Field Mouse, another from the busy indie scene in Brooklyn (Portland Oregon seems to be the West coast hotbed equivalent).  Anyway, this definitely can get filed under the "dream pop" category.    It again proves my point that I made earlier, that the fresh new music is often made by the obscure, unsigned bands.    This is very dreamy and surreal..  Rachel Browne sings lead vocals and plays guitar for this four-piece band.  They were on the list of bands to watch for in 2012.   Well, I hope that maybe 2013 and beyond can be fruitful for this really good band.   This should go right to the top of the SNS list soon.  August 20 they will be playing in their home borough, at 284 Kent Ave with a few other bands, and the Music Hall of Williamsburg, also in Brooklyn on September 21.   Keep your eye out for them.

Has it been really over three years ago since we were treated to the feel-good sounds of "Home" by Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros?      That was a great song, indeed.   Their second album Here was a hit as well, featuring the #4 SNS hit "That's What's Up".   Now along comes their third album, eponymously titled, and the lead, featured track is "Better Days".   This is definitely a different sound than the other familiar tracks, so don't expect another "Home".   But it's still a great song, a little gospel and retro soul thrown into a chugging mid-tempo track.    Definitely worth a listen.  Looking at their tour schedule, I was excited to see that they are playing at Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square PA, on September 28, a place I've been to a couple of times.  However, that will be the closest place they will be playing.

TIDBITS:   Paul Czekaj's summer anthem, "At the Beach", holds on the top spot for a fifth week.  And I need to correct myself; for the state contest for an official Sandy recovery song, Paul will be submitting "My Home New Jersey" and not "Even Better Than Before" as I indicated earlier.    And finally, Rachel Allyn will be opening up for "The Gambler" himself, Kenny Rogers. at Yonkers Raceway, on August 18.  The Jefferson House seems like a long time ago, doesn't it?
