Good Stuff That's Out There! (SNS 6/2/2012)

THE LOWDOWN:  I'll make it brief this time, so here's some stuff I've been listening to and getting into a lot lately:

Lana Del Rey, "Young and Beautiful".    Her "Ride" has been one of my favorites this year, and is still in my top 3.   And before that, "Video Games" hit my top 20.    Those songs were from her first two studio albums, and she has a third one on the way.   However, this song is from the soundtrack to the current remake of the movie The Great Gatsby, and if you enjoyed "Ride", you will like "Young and Beautiful" as well.   It took me two listens to realize that the same soulfulness that marked the prior song, also went into the new one.  As for the soundtrack, it's a pretty interesting mix of old and new, as well as current alternative favorites, such as The XX, Jack White, Florence + the Machine, and Gotye; plus hip-hop heavyweights will.i.am and Jay-Z .  Gotta also love Bryan Ferry's input in his remake of "Love is the Drug".  Might be worth checking out if only for the curiosity factor.  "Young and Beautiful" is the top debut at #73.

Daft Punk, "Get Lucky".  The song moves from #45 to #36.   The electronic duo are best known (by me anyway) for their 2002 hit, "One More Time", which landed in my year end top 10 of that year.   It's been eight years since their last set, but their newly released album, Random Access Memories, recently debuted at #1 on Billboard's album chart.   So, why the sudden interest?    Well, first of all, the sound is different.    In fact, traditional fans of the group may not like this.    As for "Get Lucky", it definitely has a seventies disco-era feel to it.    That is no coincidence.     Seems that the album was produced by Nile Rodgers, who was with the band Chic (of "Le Freak", and "Good Times" fame), and then a legendary producer who worked with Diana Ross, Debbie Harry, Duran Duran and even Southside Johnny.     That is just the tip of the iceberg.   Other collaborators on the album include Giorgio Moroder (another disco-era producer, via Donna Summer and Blondie's "Call Me", just to name two), and Pharrell Williams, who is the featured vocalist on "Get Lucky".

Kurt Vile, "Waking On A Pretty Day".   At first I was reluctant to add this one.  After all, I just started playing "Never Run Away", and that was a decent song.   Plus "Walking..." clocked in at 9 minutes and 31 seconds.    In this world of short attention spans, it's something I could do without.   Until I heard the song.    I'm not sure what it is, but the song jams.   More of an easy-going approach, but it is persistant.   It keeps you interested.  It could be the retro soft-rockfish guitars, or the indie-ish vocals, but it's worth all of the ten minutes.    His latest album is the similarly-titled Walkin' on a Pretty Daze".  It moves 100 to 63 this week.

Churchill, "The War Within".   While "Change" hits the 30-week mark, the Denver quintet comes back with a new EP, titled after the new song (just as their prior EP was named after "Change").   For those who dismissed the prior song as "bubblegum pop" (one friend of mine did just that, I soundly disagreed), you can't make that claim on the new song.    It's familiar Churchill, but in a more progressive vein.    It's still palatable, but gets you thinking a little.   Worth trying.   The song moves 65 to 55 this week.

Candace Glover, "I Am Beautiful".   This of course, was the coronation song for the latest Anerican Idol winner.   As I have done with the previous two winners, I have added this song.    I love it, it's a nice ballad with R&B overtones, although more of a pop vein than soul.    2011's winner Scott McCreery's Country "I Love You This Big" peaked at #33, while last year's winner Phillip Phillips hit #11 with the indie-folkish "Home".     Both songs debuted in the top 10 in Billboard.

However, in contrast, Glover's song only entered at #93 on the chart and fell off the next week.  Much was made of a female winning the Idol crown for first time in six seasons.    Her performance of  "Beautiful" as well as Adele's debut "Chasing Pavements' and a classic "I (Who Have Nothing)" clinched the title for her.   So, why the low chart position?   Perhaps, it's due to the song relationship with the artist.  Many have felt, that it doesn't do her justice, that an R&B singer be handed a pop song.    There are plans for Glover to put out another song more in an R&B vein as her second single.   The other reason might be "Idol" itself.    It's no secret that ratings dropped again this season, thus it could be the "who cares?" situation.   Last year's "Home" dropped off the charts after three weeks; it could be suggested that it became a hit only after it was played during the Olympic television coverage, and when Triple-A radio started playing it.   Many have said that they just loved the song, and didn't know Phillips won "Idol" that year.     All I can say is that talent will prevail; and I do like Glover's future.

DELAYED REACTION:   I try to, as much as possible, to sync my current playlist with what is current out there.   Many times that isn't possible for various reasons.    Often, I'm not aware of songs until I've heard them a few times, or, not hearing them being announced on radio (a chronic problem), or just missing out.   Two examples on the SNS chart this week are Alicia Keys' "Girl on Fire" and Rihanna's "Stay".   But it works the opposite, too.     It was almost one year ago, on June 30, 2012 that I added "Next to Me", by Emeli Sande.   It was a catchy song, and I held onto it for 21 weeks, peaking it at #27.   Not awesome, but a solid presence.   Well, just so happens that it's still ascending the charts, knocking on Billboard's Top 10 and #3 on the Adult top 40 chart.   And my wife is constantly humming it now.    Radio is playing it.    So, I had no choice but to bring it back.    This phenomenon is nothing new; it happened last year with Ellie Goulding's "Lights" which was my #1 in December of 2011 but didn't hit the top 2 on Billboard until the following autumn.

AT THE TOP:  The Veils log their second week at the top spot with "Through the Deep Dark Wood".  Yeah Yeah Yeah's inches into the top 10, while Foxygen and Pageants hit the top 20.
