The weekend of this blog date, April 20 was spent down in Washington DC. No, it wasn't to visit the Mall or any of the national landmarks, but to visit our niece Bailey, who, with her roommate Katie, found an apartment in a really nice area in the Dupont section of the town. As it was in the springtime, many trees and flowers were in full bloom, although the famous cherry blossoms had already gone past peak.
Instead of touring the Washington Monument, Capitol Building and other places of interest on the National Mall, we confined our stay to Georgetown and some other nearby areas. Beautiful spring weather had a great turnout of people outside. We saw an ensemble of musicians with some musical instruments, and another with washboards. It reminded me of New York City at times. And then there was Bailey herself, and in the nine years I've known her, since she was a teenager, she's been up on all of the cutting edge music. She's gotten me into bands like Death Cab for Cutie, The Head and the Heart, Regina Spektor, My Morning Jacket, and most recently Dawes, introduced when we visited her last year.
This time around, Bailey was ahead of me (I usually ask, every time I see her, what is she listening to. She went ahead and made me a mix CD with new stuff she's listening to. She played some of it on her iPod. I haven't had time to play it, but in the next few weeks I will add some of the songs and do a review. The only song familiar to me is "Serpents" by Sharon Van Etten, a top 10 SNS hit early last year. Another promising song is by Ben Howard, "The Wolves". And stuff by bands I'm somewhat familiar with, just as Blind Pilot, Ben Harper, White Denim, First Aid Kit, and Feist, just to name a few. Hopefully some will become regulars on the SNS 100 soon.
CHART ACTIVITY: Despite its popularity with one of my friends, it looks like Fitz & the Tantrum's "Out of My League" won't break the record for most weeks at the top. It's stopped at seven, leaving it in a tie with "Blow Me (One Last Kiss)" by Pink, and "Screws Get Loose" by Those Darlins. Lana Del Rey's "Ride", finally hits the top spot. The song, from her album Paradise, is her second SNS Top 20 song ("Video Games" hit #12, which was from her full-length Born to Die set), and is still haunting me. It's a very soulful song that just keeps coming at you. It didn't make any national charts (despite her EP making top #10 on Billboard's chart). Definitely still need to follow her. The two biggest entries into the Top 10 are The Veils and Calvin Harris featuring Florence Welch. Golden Void also enters the two 20 with their second SNS hit, "Shady Grove".
The debuts this week are headed by Matthew Koma's "Parachute". A friend introduced me to this song, and also indicated that he is a friend of hers. He hails from Long Island NY, and probably at this point, his claim to fame is that of Carly Rae Jepsen's (of "Call Me Maybe" fame) boyfriend. "Parachute" will not wind up in any year-end rock lists, but if you're looking for some quality pop music this is it. This is the type of music that you might hear from female artists like, say, Ellie Goulding (who he is opening up for in a current tour of Europe). It's interesting that he started out as a punk rock artist inspired by the likes of Elvis Costello, but has traversed several genres, hoping to find a comfort zone. If you want some non-threatening, but thinking-mans pop, check it out; it's from the EP of the same name.
Right behind Koma is the new entry by Foxygen, "San Francisco". While on first impression, it's more cutting edge than Koma's song, it comes across at pop, too, although more of the dream & indie pop variety than mainstream. But only at first, as it delves into a bit of psychedelic pop and rock before it's all over. It really grows on you. Foxygen has been a favorite since "Make It Known" hit #2 here early last fall. The subsequent "Shuggie" was OK, but this one will bring them back to the top echelon of my chart. Both "Shuggie" and "San Francisco" (no relation to The Mowgli's current song) hail from We are the 21st Century Ambassidors of Peace and Magic. The Knitting Factory and the Mercury Lounge on May 14 and 15, respectively, in New York City is where you will find this really cool band.
PROSPECTS: As I said earlier, it's been a rough year writing this blog. I have skipped a few weeks since the start of the year. And since I'm going away soon, a few more weeks may need to be skipped. I am nearing 10,000 views on this blog since I started it on this platform two years ago, so I want to keep it going at least until then. Listening to the music and making my chart is a labor of love, but trying to write about it every week is very time consuming. What I will say to that is to just let nature take its course.
