But it was Annette, who made the most impact, especially with me growing up. Of course, she is best known as one of the "mouseketeers" on the original version of the "Mickey Mouse Club", the Disney kid's show that originally ran in the 1950's, but best remembered by me in its sixties reruns. She also had a string of hits in the late fifties on the pop charts after the show's end, and then proceeded to start in a series of Beach Party movies with Frankie Avalon. She was indeed America's sweetheart. Her big hits included "Tall Paul" (#7) and "O Dio Mio" (#10).
Appearances dried up after the end of the 60's, but she still made some appearances on TV sitcoms and variety shows. She also starred in a few commercials for Skippy Peanut Butter. Finally, in 1987, she reunited with Avalon in a spoof & tribute to those beach films, "Back to the Beach", which for me, along with some current pop icons of the day (Pee Wee Herman), as well as those from the sixties (Tony Dow and Jerry Mathers of Leave It To Beaver), and Bob Denver and Alan Hale Jr from "Gilligan's Island". Also, I remember it for the great version of Dick Dale's surf-rock gem "Pipeline" which he performed with Stevie Ray Vaughan on the film's soundtrack.
Not too long after that movie, Annette was inflicked with Multiple Scorosis (MS), which gradually took its toll on her and her body, and it was this disease which ulitmately did her in. She was a throw back to what I thought were better times of my youth, and now she's gone.
HEARING THE BLUES: The artists I review on my blog are generally national acts, along with a few local talent as well. I rarely talk about cover bands, unless my friends are in them. Bob Shupp has been a friend for a few years, and is a regular at the Jets tailgates I've attended since 1997. He is there with his wife Ellen and a couple of friends. Bob is the drummer for Blues Chamber, which have been around for years, but who I finally had the opportunity to check out, at Frenchy's, in my hometown of Roselle Park. They are very good. As the name suggests, they are a blues oriented cover band, doing some George Thorogood and many others. They're also into classic rock, and even some pop stuff is done. Tonight (April 13th), they played the Lakeside Pub in Wayne. Excellent musicianship. They've been around since 2001 and used to play at the Great Notch Inn, that little place you pass along Route 46 as you're going by Montclair and Little Falls. If you want more info on where this trio will be playing, go to their website at http://blueschamber.com/Blues_Chamber_Web/Home.html
ONWARD TO THE MUSIC: I'll keep it brief, but Fitz & the Tantrums continue at the top for a sixth week. They are just one week away from tying the longevity record. Did anyone catch him with Daryl Hall on his VH-1 show last week? They are a talented band, and I'm glad they are getting some sort of airplay on this record. Lana Del Rey and Leagues slip into the second and third positions, followed by the Vicci Martinez record that has been permeating my mind much of last week. Leila's the only new entry in the Top 10 with "October", her third on SNS. Pink's duet with Nate Ruess jumps all the way from #25 to #11, and that is another song going thru my head this past week. "Just Give Me A Reason" is her biggest pop hit from their latest album The Truth About Love. Glad to see the Philly songstress stay at the top for over a decade now. Yeah Yeah Yeah's and Paramore also hit the Top 20.
CALVIN + THE MACHINE: I don't normally pay attention to pop records unless they've scaled the top of the charts (unless of course, they are indie crossovers), and usually anything unknown that features another artist I figure would just be another uninspirated pop record. But two things happened to me recently. On weekday mornings, I listen to a bit of WPLJ, the Adult Top 40 station in New York. Usually I hear the same songs every morning, which is actually OK if it's a good song. Mostly it's banal pop, but I hear Pink a lot, as well as Maroon 5, Train , and even some Katy Perry and Taylor Swift is OK.
Lately I've been hearing a pop record that is a bit of a throwback to the techno/trance era, intersperced with pop vocals. The vocals were very familiar. A look down the charts of the Billboard Hot 100 reveals a song "Sweet Nothing", by Calvin Harris featuring Florence Welch. Well, I have no idea who Harris in, but the vocals on the song were unmistakenly Welch's. If you don't know who she is, let me give you a nudge. Ms. Welch is the Florence of Florence + the Machine, one of my favorite artists in the SNS era, with two number one's on my chart, plus several other entries. Here, she lends her vocals to, as I mentioned earlier, a rhythmic pop record which breaks down into a dance-oriented trance beat. Poppish, yes, but I love her vocals, and even the instrument break is awesome. Harris, by the way, is from Scotland, and has been around since 2007. He's had three U.S. Top 20 hits, with "Feels So Close" and "Let's Go", the latter a colaboration with hip-hopper Ne-Yo, and of course the Welch hit, which peaked at #10 nationally. I'm glad to see Florence have a hit; it just unfortunate that she hasn't done it with The Machine--yet, anyway. There is another song from the album that features Ellie Goulding, so we have that to look forward to as well. From Harris' third album 18 months.
Back to more indie things, the other high new entry this week is from a band called The Veils, with "Through the Deep Dark Woods". They are a band from London fronted by Finn Andrews, and have been around since 2001. The song, a recent Brian Sniatkowski Song of the Week, is from their upcoming fourth album Time Stays, We Go, due at the end of this month. They will appear at the Bowery Ballroom on May 7. I like this song, it's fresh indie at it's best. A driving, rock-oriented soulful song that doesn't let up. It's a song you could listen to over and over. I picture listening to this at some kind of outdoor event, and I could hear it over and over. Two examples of fresh new material after a few weeks of drought.
