The top debut this week is "Monday" from Leila, at #63. It's the second featured track from her first full-length album Looking Glass that came out this past fall. It follows "Mirror Mirror", which peaked at #6 and spent several months in my Top 10. Although the whole album is great from start to finish, this track especially stands out for me. I will post a video of this on my wall soon (there's a live version and acoustic live version as well on YouTube), but the studio version is very awesome as well. It is in her blusey-sultry style groove that she is comfortable with, but it's more than that. The song reminds me of 1970's soul gems, "Sara Smile" by Hall & Oates (especially the intro), and "Easy" by The Commodores.
Of course, the main difference between those classics is that Leila is, of course, female, and that alone adds something special to her performance. You can find her playing live at many small venues around New York City; most recently she was at Cafe Alor in Staten Island performing with her twin sister (and equally talented) Omnia. One of my priorities is catching a show with either of them. Nice, laid back soul coming from here.
One portntial problem that may befall Leila is her performing name, which is the given first name. I expericenced this firsthand when I tried to download her "Hush Little Baby" (from her debut EP, Black and White), #1 from May 2011, I found out there was another singer from Europe with that name, who once played keyboards for former Sugarcubes leader Bjork, and who herself released an albout in 2012, U&I. There was a little contest suggested by our Leila as to how she wanted her stage name to be. It appeared the winner was her full name, Leila Hegazy. Well, with apologies to the "other" Leila, that, despite her fifteen year jump on ours, there is only one Leila. As long as she keeps putting out good songs like "Monday" there will be no contest!
Next in line is the third single from Pink, "Just Give Me A Reason", from her current The Truth About Love. I've always considered the Philly singer/songwriter a cut about all the other so-called divas out there, not only because of her professionalism, but her rock-ish approach to pop music. "Blow Me (One Last Kiss)" was an unexpected treat on my chart last fall (seven weeks at the top spot here), as well as the #2 follow-up "Try". This one is a little change of pace for her and features Nate Ruess who is the lead singer of corssover indie pop band fun., recently off a #1 SNS hit of their own with Carry On". I wouldn't call "Just Give Me..." a ballad, more of a mid-tempo song, but it's still a little outside the pop box. Chalk up another winner for Ms. Alecia Beth Moore.
A few months ago when I was looking at the website RCD LBL (which showcases new releases from rather obscure artists), I came across an interesting outfit, Thao and the Get Down Stay Down. An example of the burgeoning indie folk scene and hailing from San Francisco, and former quintet turned duo (lead singer Thao Nguyen plus guitarist and keyboardist Adam Thompson), "Holy Roller" reached my top 10 a month or so ago. However, their new entry at #76, "We the Common", the title track from their latest set, is garnering more widespread airplay. It was added to the currents playlist at alternative station WEQX, and was a recent Brian Sniatkowski "Song of the Week" (as was its predecessor). The new one is less immediate than "Roller", upon first listen: Stripped down and rawish folk, it actually reminds me of some of the singer songwriter folky stuff of the early 1970's, like Donovan's "Riki Tiki Tavi". This one will grow on you a bit, and could be their breakthru. They will be on tour (which I mentioned a couple weeks back that Sallie Ford & the Sound Outside will open for them).
BRIEFLY: A passing mention at some of the other rising songs of my SNS 100 list that I hadn't talked about thus far. Jersey rockers Bon Jovi are back with a new album, What About Now, which became their third set in a row to debut at #1 on Billboard's album chart. Jon and the gang are touring once again, and the single "Because We Can" is rising (#27 this week). Vicci Martinez has been a prime mover for a few weeks here as "Come Along" rises to #23. This week, I added the fact that it features Cee Lo Green on this. What I didn't mention a few weeks back was that Martinez was a finalist on season two of "The Voice" (in which Green was a coach). Glad to see other outlets besides "American Idol" produce some budding starts. And speaking of "Idol", I like current winner Phillip Phillips' latest "Gone Gone Gone", a worthy successor to "Home", which finally drops off my list after 39 weeks. It has a similar feel to the prior hit. The Avett Brothers' "February Seven" a bit of a slower pace from their top 5 "Live and Die", but it's heartfelt and I did hear it while I was at Krogh's in Sparta the other day. It's growing on me. And in the veteran department,"Change" by Churchill and "The Curve" by Golden Void, a link to the memories of last fall, are still in the Top 20 after over four months, as I still continue to enjoy both of these songs. The former is on the Triple A chart and was on the verge of breaking thru.
Finally, it's March and "I Feel It In My Bones', the Christmas entry from last season, by The Killers, is still on the charts. Then again, with the winter we've had, it may as well stay in there!
