Ready for the North (SNS 2/2/2013)

Well, I've cut down the lag time to just four days now.   This week will be very brief as I wanted to get this in before I make the trip up north tomorrow.   As I mentioned last week, it's the annual ski trip, this time it's Sugarbush Vermont.   We're expecting a big snowstorm--or maybe we aren't.  No one is quite sure.   It's something about two storms coming together.    New Jersey might get 2 inches, 2 feet, or rain.    New England is bound to get a double dose of the white stuff.   So between the possibility of getting stranded up there, and if not, then just the ride up here, I figured I'd update my list in time for the four day weekend for me.

SCRAMBLE:   Well, it wasn't Thao & the Get Down Stay Down making that 14 to 1 move I mentioned last week, but I wasn't far off.      Grace Potter & the Nocturnals, however set a record for the biggest jump to #1, up from 9 last week, with "Runaway".     The fact that they are from Vermont--a state which I'm heading to---perhaps wasn't lost on me.    It's Grace's second #1, with "Stars" having been atop the list back in December.    And with "Never Go Back" peaking at #2, the album The Lion the Beast the Beat is one of the most successful ones on SNS.    This is a great band, and hope to catch them soon; "Stars" is still on a couple of charts nationally and hope it breaks through.     "Runaway" reminds me of "Tiny Light" from their previous album in that the rock guitar sensabilities comes pouring through.

COLD AS HECK:  The Top Debut this week is by Cold War Kids, and "Miracle Mile".  To be honest I've had trouble finding some good songs with even a drop of soul in it this year.    I managed to snag Pageants last week (which hits the Top 20), so I gave this one a shot..   We last checked up on the Long Beach California group in 2011, when "Louder Than Ever" had a four week run at #1 early in that year on my chart.   That song, from Mine is Yours, was a significant part of my ski trips two winters ago.    "Miracle Mile" is from their new forthcoming set, Dear Miss Lonelyhearts.  Not as immediate impact as the previous song, still, after a piano intro, it's a driving song with forceful guitars and vocals that keep up.    With a drop of pop overtones, this one should stick around, especially with the weaker competition.    I don't like it as much as "Louder Than Ever", at least not year, but has potential with many listens.     Indie rock at its best.  April 13th at Webster Hall in New York is where you'll catch these guys.

A LITTLE BIT COUNTRY:    Either the next blog or the one after that, I will talk about some country music, but I wanted to touch on a couple of things.   Last week, I mentioned "Jersey Strong" as a country-sounding song about restoring the shore areas devasted by Superstorm Sandy.   Turns out that After The Reign is indeed a country band, playing the Jersey Shore circuit and involved in promotions with Thunder 106.    Which brings me to that station's house band.     Rachel Allyn has finally released her long awaited first full length album, Do It Yourself.     I have downloaded it, but will wait upon my return to review it, at which time I will pick the track or tracks to spotlight on my chart.

Happy listening!
