As it's not the intended reason we went, there wasn't much. It would have been great while we were in Vermont to catch Grace Potter's Grand Pointe North festival, but we missed it by two weeks. Oh well. Our friends Terry and Fred aren't big music fans, either...but lucky for me, they like breweries, wineries and a couple of other things, so the music wasn't missed too much. I did play my iPOD on the way up, and several songs went on in my head, like Django Django's "Default" as well as my reigning #1 song, "Elizabeth's Theme" by Dirty Beaches. That went through my head as I shot a few more scenes for this video I want to make. As I've mentioned that recent weeks, it's not going to be a big thing, since the song is rather soothing anyway. But I hope to put it together soon.
"One More Night", by Maroon 5 got some mentions during the trip; the song is #1 for the third week on the Billboard Hot 100, it moves up to #27 on SNS. Finally, at our overnight stop in Watertown, we hit Buffalo Wild Wings for the first time, a bunch of people at a nearby table were singing (or at least yelling out) Taylor Swift's "We Are Never Getting Back Together". Our friend Victoria Scholl, who is attending Rochester University of Technology, had a Deadmau 5 poster up in her room; the band spent a couple of weeks on SNS recently with "Professional Grievers', it ranks currently at #106.
STYLIN'?: And then there's "Gangnam Style". By now, everyone had heard this infectious pop/rap/dance song. It's #2 on Billboard, and Victoria (and her sister Emily, whom we also visited at Keuka College in the Finger Lakes) are aware of this burgeoning dance craze. It makes a big leap from 54-8 on my SNS 100. The day after we got home, we headed to the Denville Fall Harvest Festival, and when this song came on, several kids were doing this. The video now has about 400 million hits, and it looks like this will be the biggest dance thing since the Macarena, which stayed at #1 Billboard for weeks on end sixteen years ago. I haven't done this yet, but I guess it'll just be a matter of time before all weddings and other banquets will feature this alongside the Twist, Electric Slide, Cha-Cha Slide and all the rest. I do, suspect, that for me, this song will have a short chart life. Will it hit #1? It looks like that possibility, but the bottom line is that it's really not my kind of music. However, much of my chart is also influenced by my friends and surroundings, so, who knows?
REACH FOR THE SKY: Some good debuts to talk about this week, and we will start with the new single by Adele, "Skyfall", coming in at #48, which I think is the highest debut this year so far. It's the theme song from the new James Bond movie of the same name, and from the film's Soundtrack, It won't be a part of any new Adele album (she had said publicly that she is taking a break from her next endeavor), so we will have to enjoy this for now. And there's a lot to enjoy. Bond themes are making a comeback after down time in the late 1980's and 90's. Madonna's "Die Another Day" reached #8 in 2005, and the two subsequent themes, by Chris Cornell of Soundgarten, and Jack White, also made the national chart.
Adele's song debuts on the Billboard Hot 100 at #8, equaling Madonna's peak with hersong. But you have to go back to Duran Duran's "A View to A Kill", which hit #1 in 1985 to find a higher charting Bond song. "Skyfall" is one of the best themes in a long time. It harkens back to the 1960's themes like "Goldfinger" by Shirley Bassey, to which this one has been compared to. Given Adele's soulfulness, it's really not that much of a surprise, as she puts her usual heart and soul into any performance she takes on. The hauntingness of an earlyBond theme is back!
Another high debut, at #59, is "If You Love Me", by Child Actor. This one I found off of rcdlbl.com a couple of weeks ago, but it wasn't available for download, until now. A bit along the lines of Grizzy Bear's "Yet Again", in that it has that sort of retro pop vibe coming into it, although this is more synth-based. Child Actor is a male-female duo from Boston-- Sedgie Ogilvy (vocals) and Max Heath (keyboards), and I believe they are cousins. Some 60's psychedelic pop meeting 70's and 80's synth-based music is a good way to describe them.
Next up is "Mirror Mirror" by Leila, from her just-released first full-length album Looking Glass. You have heard me mention both her (full name Leila Hegazy) as well as her equally-talented twin sister Omnia, both with worldly music styles, but vastly different approaches to them. Leila had a #1 song on my chart back in May 2011 called "Hush Little Baby", as well as a mid-charting song "Black and White" earlier this year. Both songs were from her debut EP, also called Black and White.
Looking Glass features all new songs, and while I plan to review the whole album in the near future, I wanted to select one song from it now. I am not aware if there is a "single"from the album, but based on iTunes, it appears that "Mirror Mirror" is the most poplular, so I added that at #63. The song (no releation to Diana Ross's 1982 hit of the same name) is a voice and piano ballad similar to Adele's "Somebody Like You" in that regard. But I can hear Aretha Franklin's "Natural Woman" as well as maybe even a bit of early Elton John thrown in for good measure. She has always had a soulful voice, and I have compared her in the past to Norah Jones and Corinne Bailey Rae, and most recently Rebecca Furgeson (who's at #2 this week on SNS). This is, however, more in a laid back blusely vibe. And if I can make "Elizabeth's Theme" #1, then this one certainly has the potential to be her second SNS chart topper. And, like the first, "Hush Little Baby", the title (and lyrics) point to old nursery rhyme songs, just wanted to point that one thing out. I like this song a lot and I know I will even more after several listens. This girl's got talent!
One more debut to mention, that being "The Curve" by Golden Void. I don't know anything about the band, but this song is pretty much a mish-mash of every 70's classic rock song you could think of. KISS immediately comes to mind, but you can throw in a bit of Thin Lizzy in there for good measure. There's a few bluesy jams a la Led Zeppelin in there as well. I love it!
