RAVES: We will get right to the Top Debut song, at #70, the new single from the Danish duo The Raveonettes. "Observations" takes the Pick of the Week prize. The new track is from their forthcoming Observator set, due in September. The album is their sixth, and the fourth after their personal breakthru for me, Pretty in Black, ironically their lowest charting album, but still their best. Their most recent endeavor, 2011's Raven in the Grave was mostly well-received here, with their sound updated from their retro early-60s surf sound to a more synth-laden 80's. I added several songs from that set, spearheaded by "Recharge and Revolt" which peaked at #2 in May of last year. It also featured: "Apparitions" (#22), and "Forget That You're Young" (#48).
The new single puts them in yet another phase, in a more modern, subtle, even a dream-pop-like direction, kind of a cross between Coldplay and Fleet Foxes, just to think of two recent bands. Although I fell in love with Pretty in Black, the Raveonettes never stand still, yet continue to make appealing music regardless of their sound. They are on tour, first in Europe, then heading to our side of the pond, with a date at Webster Hall on October 5.
AT THE TOP: Maroon 5's much-talked about current single "Payphone" hangs in at #2, and moving up to a new peak of 37 here on SNS, but their more surreal-sounding entry from The Hunger Games soundtrack, "Come Away to the Water", tops my chart this week. Strong new entries into the Top 20 include M83's "Reunion" and Nunca's "Trails and Ways", while The Kooks have their second top 10 with "Is It Me", at #6.
NO 'ANTICIPATION' FOR THIS CARLY: I don't normally like to discuss pure pop songs and artists, but I can't really ignore the current Billboard #1 song for the fourth week. Of course, I am refering to Carly Rae Jepsen's bubblegummy "Call Me Maybe" which inches up to #79 this week. And yes, I have begrudgingly added this song as I like to at least consider anything that does top the chart if it's halfway listenable. There was considerable discussion on my SNS music page on Facebook, basically echoing the reason why I added it. One female friend didn't want to like it, but the damn song was going thru her head, even though she says she knows better. A male friend "learned to like it", basically because his fourteen year-old son was playing the heck out of it. And then there are our two favorite 18-year-old graduates from Pine Bush N.Y, Emily and Victoria. They aren't fond of the song at all (and you'd think they would since they're more in her target audience. They have listened to some of the songs on my SNS chart playlist when they visited our house this week and they were impressed, even though they have heard many of them for the first time. Jepsen actually was on Canada's version of Idol and placed third in that show's season five in 2007. Apparently her recent big break occurred when Justin Bieber signed her to his manager's record label. Jepsen is doing a world tour. Early this year, she toured her native Canada, opening up for the band Hanson, another teen-oriented band, with tons of more talent, but without a hit the last fifteen years because they moved in a more progressive direction (although they'll always be known for "MMMBop"). It would be nice if Jepsen's music could progress as time went on. Out of the current drop of divas, only Lady Gaga's music has gotten a bit more complex. We will see how long Jepsen sticks around, or whether "Call Me Maybe" will fully be entrenched in the brain..
LOCAL PRIDE: In my blog and on my chart, I love to check out new up and coming artists, especially those home grown in my area, or close by. Two such artists, Rachel Allyn and Leila, I have supported over the last couple of years (in fact, it was two years ago this week that my wife and I "discovered" Ms. Allyn, who essentially has been the hottest artists in the almost-two year history of my blog and chart). Both of them will be releasing their first full-length album shortly. No current word on Rachel's release, but she played at the Dover fireworks on July 3rd, and more importantly will be on Sunday's bill at Maplewoodstock, Maplewood's music and arts festival.
As for Leila, the talented singer-songwriter who topped my chart in May 2011 with "Hush Little Baby" from her EP Black and White, she has her album completed, but needs to raise $2,800 in order to produce the CD and have it released. She's very talented, I have put her in a class with such people as Norah Jones and Corinne Bailey Rae, among others. Please consider making a pledge so we can hear some great music.
