The Metric System (Music Review 6/11/2012)

DEAL THIS: It's been quite a while since I've basically had "nothing" to specifically write about in my blog.   Ive been pretty busy mourning the deaths of musician after musician, or to report on the music of an event I attended.    So, the only new thing that has basically happened during the past week, but that I created a new Facebook group page, named after this blog.    I am hoping to get some music discussions going regarding some of the new stuff that's out there, but a lot of the oldies, classic rock and classic hits that many of my friends grew up listening to.     I plan on posting some of my new music there, as if anyone noticed, much of my Picks of the Week, and other new stuff have been absent from my wall for awhile.    Please request to join; it should be fun once we get into things.   Aside from posting my current favorites, I'll do some past countdowns, and all are welcome to post as well.

WE'RE A CANADIAN BAND:   Metric scores its first SNS #1 as "Youth  Without Youth" jumps into the top spot this week.    The Canadian outfit led by Emily Haynes, formed in Toronto, in 1998, has been one of my favorites over the past several years.     They have released five studio albums, but the first one to attract my attention was 2009's Fantasies.  In fact, one of the tracks, "Help I'm Alive" was my #1 song of that year in my year-end list.   Another great song of theirs hailed from the Twilight: Eclipse soundtrack (the second film in the popular series).   "Eclipse (I'm Yours)", reached #2 (kept out by The Black Keys' "Tighten Up"), and itself landed at #6 on my 2010 year end list.

"Youth...." hails from their just-released fifth set, Synthetica, and Haynes herself handles the synthesizer as well as keyboards and of course, the lead vocals.   The sound is pure millenium indie-rock, and the single has such a bouncy beat.    It grow on you with every listen.    There's a good chance that the band will have a year-end top 10 song for the third time in four years, in 2010.    On September 23rd, they'll be playing Radio City Music Hall in New York City, which I think is a cool venue to see them.

Elsewhere in the upper echelon, we have The Decemberists finally cracking the Top 10 with "One Engine".   As I speculated a few weeks ago, it joins Maroon 5's "Come Away To The Water" as two songs from the soundtrack of the hit movie The Hunger Games.    I'm not sure why this Portland band isn't getting airplay with this song, but that's OK.

The biggest entry into the Top 20 belongs to Passion Pit, with "Take A Walk".  The band is from Cambridge, Massachusetts, and the song is from their second album Gossamer.   They did make some noise their first time out with their debut Manners (#51 on Billboard's Album Chart).  A single from that album "The Reeling", landed at #21 on my year end Top 100 for 2009.  This Saturday, they'll be playing in Randall Island, a show that might be worth catching.

The top debut this week is the third track from The Black Keys' latest album El Camino.  This one is called "Little Black Submarine".  A slower, more acoustic number starting off, then starts cranking up midway--as opposed to the bouncy "Gold On the Ceiling" or the frantic "Lonely Boy", it eeriely reminds me a little of "Stairway To Heaven", which just becomes another indication of this duo's versatality.

Of Monsters and Men is next with "Mountain Sound", the follow-up to "Little Talks", the Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zero's "Home" soundalike which just fell off after a nice 25-week run on SNS.  This is actually just an album cut (the new single will be "Dirty Paws") from their current (and debut) album My Head Is An Animal.  It too, has that kind of upbeat sound, if not otherwise similar to the prior song.     You still can't help but compare it to the Sharpe song, however.

DELAYED REACTION:   A couple of the hits on my past SNS charts are still developing into hits elsewhere.     The number 1 Alternative song this week is Grouplove's "Tongue Tied", knocking out the Black Keys two week run with "Gold on the Ceiling".     "Tongue Tied", also at #64 on the Hot 100 and slowing moving up, reached my top 10 in late February.     The song is falling slowly in its 27th week on SNS, and if the song catches on a la fun. or Gotye, we could see it quite a while longer (I'm still not really tired of it).

But probably the biggest lag between an SNS hit and a national hit could be Ellie Goulding's "Lights".   It has been creeping towards the top 10 on the Hot 100, #12 this week, and re-enters the Adult Top 40 list at #21.     "Lights" was my #1 song back in December.  It fell off my chart in March after a 24-week run, but if it cracks the national top 10, I may re-add the song.
