Music Review Week of 4/30/12

We'll get right to it this week.    "Screws Get Loose" by Those Darlins remains at the top for a third week, and now by a comfortable margin over Gotye's "Somebody That I Used to Know", which has now been #2 for a ninth week in a row, definitely a record.   The song, which definitely deserves to be at the top, does hold that distinction for a third week on Billboard's Hot 100.   Fun.'s "We Are Young" holds at #2 on the big chart, but drops a notch to #4 here, displaced in the third spot by "This Head I Hold", the LA indie quartet Electric Guest.  Primarily a duo consisting of Asa Taccone and Matthew Compton and working with Danger Mouse (most notably one half of Gnarl's Barkley, with Cee Lo Green), they were named as one of MTV's "Artists to Watch" in 2012.  The song, "This Head I Hold" is excellent and Taccone's vocals remind me a lot of Motown legend Smokey Robinson.    Last week, the band released their debut album, Mondo.  This week, they played The Bowery Ballroom in New York City, and will also play in Washington DC at the Rock n' Roll Hotel.   Definitely an act to catch.

Elsewhere in the Top 20, there are three debuts, most notably "Blood for Poppies", by Garbage, which seems to be catching on with alternative rock stations.   As expected, it took several listens to really get into this one.   The 'oh-oh-OH's in the chorus remind me a lot of Laura Branigan's 1984 hit "Self Control", but other than that, this one is all Shirley Manson & company's song.    A nice return for the band.   Lady Antebellum's very sentimental "Dancing Away With My Heart", advances 21-14, becoming the Country trio's first Top 20 hit on SNS (although their 2010 hit "Need You Now", which popularity had pre-dated my chart, did land in my end of year list for that year).    With sentimentality on Facebook these days landing squarely on my fellow Roselle Park High School alumni, this story of two lovers who haven't seen each other since the end of school, does tug on the heartstrings a bit.    Great song, as country has been making somewhat of a comeback on the chart, with Rachel Allyn (#17), Toby Keith (#25), Kellie Pickler (#81) and Kenny Chesney & Tim McGraw (debut at #89) also representing the genre.

"The Rifle's Special", the second track featured from The Shins' album Port of Morrow, also enters the top 20 this week, outdistancing the first single, the top 10 alternative single "Simple Song".  This is currently an album track, as the second single will officially be "Bait and Switch".

This week's Top Debut is the new single by Metric "Youth Without Youth".  It comes from the Canadian indie-rockers forthcoming album, their fourth, Synthetica.  The band had my #1 song of 2009 with "Help, I'm Alive" from their prior set Fantasies.  A track from the Twilight: Eclipse soundtrack "I'm Yours" also landed in the top 10 of my year-end list the following year.    They will be at Lollapalooza in Chicago this summer, and well as shows in their native Canada.  In June they will be in Kansas City at Livestrong Sporting Park for a festival that also features Foster the People, The Joy Formidable, The Shins, The Kooks, and The Dirty Heads, so if you're heading out that way, check it out.  If you can't make it out there, stick around as they will embark on a U.S. Tour this fall, with the primary stop being New York's Radio City Music Hall on September 23.  Synthetica will drop June 12.

Next at #83 is "Living It Lonely" by Smash Palace, and with this comes quite a story.   If the name of this band sounds a bit familiar, then (1) you live in South Jersey or the Philadelphia area, and (2) you listened to rock radio in Philly and even top 40 radio station WPST, based in Trenton.    The year was 1985, and a quartet of South Jerseyans released their major label debut, eponymously titled.   (They actually had been around since 1980 as Quincy).  The single, "Living On the Borderline" got some airplay on MTV, and tons of airplay on WPST.   The song made my Top 100 year-end list in 1985, at #84.   Not only was the single popular but WPST made a point of playing others from that album: "Juliet to Me", "No Love Lost", and "Count the Days".

Then...nothing.    The band attempted to follow a producer to a new record label, but it fell thru, and their old label dropped them.   They went their own separate ways, and didn't release their next album until 1996.     But by then, they drifted back into obsurity.    Six more albums were released, the most recent being 2000's "7".    One friend of mine, Diane Carson, a transplanted Roselle Parker living in  Cape May, in 2010, "LIKEd" them on Facebook, so I decided to check them out, and was in shock that they were still around.     This new single is from their forthcoming album Do It Again, and has gotten some airplay on radio already, in fact 21 stations are playing the song (perhaps the secret is to have titles that begin with the word "living")!    We've seen bands have success, then taking forever to make another impact (Nada Surf comes to mind). It would be great to see these guys finally breakthru twenty-seven years later!

Right behind them is the new song from Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros, "That's What's Up".    As you recall, back in 2010, they were the authors of the priceless "Home", from their 2009 set Up From Below.  That song was on my original SNS chart in August 2010 and reached #12, and landed at #11 on my year end list.    Another song, "40 Day Dream" reached #15 and #50, respectively on those lists.    Lead singer Alex Ebert (there is no "Edward Sharpe") also released a solo effort last year, a song "Truth" from his "Alexander" album.   He also has sung with the band Ima Robot.

"That's What's Up" is from the contingent's follow-up album Here, on May 29.   Catch them at the Roseland Ballroom on May 8 and 9.   This band always seems to have fun on their recording; no doubt it's twice as much in concert.   A current song on my chart, Of Monsters and Men's "Little Talks" (#99) reminded me a lot like "Home".

Other newbies include Linkin Park's "Burn It Down", a pop-rocker, is from their new release Living Things which is due June 26.  "Kill for Love" by The Chromatics, yet another from the hotbed that is Portland OR, is the title track from their album of the same name, released back in March.    The aforementioned Chesney/McGraw duet, and Morning Parade, a quintet from Britain, round out the debuts.

IDOL and HIATUS:   A few weeks ago, I mentioned I was going to write about the current season 11 of American Idol if two of my favorites, Elise and Colton were still standing.  Unfortunately both got picked off last week and the week before, respectively.   Those two I thought would have been brought some styles unlike any of the past winners.    Frankly, out of who's left, I really have no clear choice.    Phillip as some potential, but is he really different from the Kris Allen-Lee DeWyze-David Cook conglomerate?     Hollie looked good this week, but she's a far cry from Kelly.     Joshua has a good chance, and perhaps Jessica as well.  Skylar seems to be uneven.    But whoever does win, don't hold your breath of them cracking my chart.

RESTING UP:  Scenes 'n' Soundwaves will take a break next week.    The chart will be frozen, but the "weeks on list" will count as the songs will maintain their positions.   This means that "Screws Get Loose" will hold the top for a fourth week, with a chance to tie the record for most weeks at #1 in two weeks.  It also means that "Someone That I Used to Know" will be stuck at #2 for a tenth week; talk about futility!

Scenes 'n' Soundwaves 100 for Week of April 30, 2012.
