The Soul of the Jersey Shore (Sound-Raves Week of 6/20/2011)

The first week of summer took place this week; it marked the longest day of the year.   Believe it or not, they start to get shorter until December, but to many---especially schoolkids---the hot fun has just begun.    The popular destination, of course is the Jersey Shore, with its great array of beaches, boardwalks, and of course nightlife.     Other states have their entertainment, but that of the Jersey Shore is unique; there is nothing like it.     Whether it's the strip on Seaside Heights, the venerable Headliner in Neptune, Jenks or Martell's in Point Pleasant Beach, or of course the legendary Stone Pony (not to mention other Asbury bars), chances are you can see your favorite band play somewhere.     Mike Dalton, Billy Lawlor, La Bamba & the Hubcaps, and The Nerds are just some past and present cover bands playing the Shore circuit.  And that is just the tip of the iceberg as there are many original bands patroling the shoreline as well.   I invite you to check them out.

Chances are, you can thank Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band (whose name is taken from a street in Belmar where one of the original members lived).     They, above anyone else, put Jersey on the map, and paved the way for acts like Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes and later, Bon Jovi.      The music lives on, but it will have to without part of its soul.

As you may know, Jersey lost one of its own last week:   Saxophonist Clarence Clemons, aka the "Big Man", passed away due to complications from a stroke he suffered.     You can recognize his work very easily...that wailing sax just screams the Shore.     Whether it's a last half of a classics like "Rosalita" or something like "Glory Days", Clemons kicked butt on the sax.    Bruce may be the face of the sound, but Clarence (along with Little Steven) provided its soul.    You know where you are, (or what you're thinking about) when you hear it.

I confess I have never seen him live; something I regret, but he's played on so many recordings that it's hard not to miss him.    Southside Johnny (who I HAVE seen live many times) got a boost from The Big Man on his debut "I Don't Want to Go Home".  He also appeared on albums by Gary U.S. Bonds, bandmate Little Stevens, Aretha Franklin and even Twisted Sister.     Perhaps his last project was on Lada Gaga's new album "Born This Way", including a solo on the diva's latest hit 'The Edge of Glory" which jumps from #90 to #59 on this weeks SoundRaves 100 chart.   You can hear him during the second half of that song.    And, in a duet with Jackson Browne, he hit the top 20 in 1985 with "You're A Friend of Mine".      Clarence had his own band for awhile ("CC and the Red Bank Rockers") as well as a club in that town, the aptly named "Big Man's West".

But of course, it's with the E Street Band that he made his mark and defined that sound.     He was on many Springsteen albums, but it is his live performances that could really put you away.     If you take away his sax, something would be definitely missing.

One of my favorite holiday songs is Darlene Love's "All Alone for Christmas", from the movie Home Alone 2, where she is backed by the E Street Band, and where Clarence's sax is prominently played.     And, as Bruce says, hopefully Santa has brought him a new sax.    There's talent where he's going!

Unfortunately, the way we're going, Clarence may well be joined by another soulful figure....Amy Winehouse.    As you may know, the Brit songstress, noted for her bouts with the law, drugs and alcohol, stumbled thru an embarassing performance in Belgrade, and wound up cancelling the remainder of her tour.    A few years ago, she predicted she, (like other rock icons just as Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison and Kurt Kobain) may die by 27.    Let's hope a talent like her spends much more time in rehab before its too late.    Clemons' 69 years were too young enough, 27 is downright horrible.    Clean up your act, Amy.

TOP 100:   One of Winehouse's comtemporaries who has for the most part, stayed clear of trouble, Adele, continues to rule the charts.  She's back at the top on the Album list, has a fifth week at the top on the Hot 100...and now spends a second week at #1 on SoundRaves with "Rumour Has It".    "Rolling In the Deep", down to #10 a couple weeks ago, continues to surge back into the top 5.

Adele's latest rein may end next week, as two strong songs are making bids: Train's "Save Me San Francisco", and "Say Hello to Goodbye" by Rachel Allyn; it's a matter of which will get there first.    If it's the latter, Rachel will equal Adele's record of #3 SoundRaves #1's.   And speaking of Ms. Allyn ( as we always seem to do each week), my wife and I caught her and her band live for the first time at Attilio's Lounge in Dover.     It was an awesome performance and I encourage you to see the entire band play.    She performed the song for the first time; this week she is making a video for this song.  It would be great if it was released when (see how confident I am?) it hits #1.

Though there were a few decent moves in the top 20, there was only one new entry, and that just squeaks in on the bottom rung: "Heart in Chains" by Kate Voegele; the singer and actress who has a recurring role in One Tree Hill.    She has hit the road this summer, mostly out west this month, and down South in July; hopefully she'll make it this way after that.   Her "99 Times" in 2009 was in my year-end Top 10.

Two big movers just outside the top 20: Katy Perry's "Last Friday Night (TGIF)" with a huge jump from #60 to #22, buoyed by that 80's themed video that I mentioned last week; and "Dear Mr. President" by Fitz & the Tantrums.   Although the retro-souled band (which logs a 29th week with "MoneyGrabber" at #65) has released a follow-up single, "Don't Gotta Work It Out", I'll be sticking to the album track for a while.   After all, it took about six months for "Money Grabber" to get some mainstream airplay; a few more weeks won't make a difference.    FATT (as they're referred to), will be playing the Dave Matthews Band Caravan in Atlantic City next weekend, as well as a concert in Central Park in September.

Lady Gaga, whose "Judas" holds at #19, has her follow-up "The Edge of Glory", which as mentioned above, features Clarence Clemons on sax.  Both tracks are from her Born This Way set, which a couple weeks ago sold $1.1 million, thanks mostly to Amazon.com selling the set for 99 cents.    She becomes the latest pop act to be parodied by "Weird Al" Yankovic.

The top debut and pick of the week is by a band called The Lonely Forest, "We Sing in Time", which is also Brian Sniatkowki's Song of the Week.  They are a 4-piece indie-rock band from the Seattle area.  Their third full-length album, released this year is Arrows.  Their tour will take them to New York's Terminal 5 on September 15.

Finally, after six months off the chart, Grace Potter & the Nocturnals, who seem to be playing every festival there is (including the recent Bonneroo affair out west), reentered with "Paris".   The song, which I had burned out of back in January, was back in my mind, so I figured it'd be worth the while to hear it again.    Along with her band, she'll be doing some dates with Kenny Chesney, who she duets with on "Tequila & Me" (#69).    And, probably not a surprise, they will be headling their own festival in her native Vermont later this year.
