AFTER LAST WEEK'S frenzy, a pretty quiet week on the music discussion front, so it's another look at the charts, which seems like the same news over and over again...well at least the Hot 100 is. As for my Scenes 'n' Soundwaves 100 chart, Carolina Beach music has the top two, six of the top 10 and 8 in the top 13.
It's again the same old news on the Hot 100, as "Luther" by Kendrick Lamar featuring SZA logs an eleventh week on the Hot 100. While it's still well off the record of 19, the way this stagnation is going, I wouldn't be surprised if it challenges it. But there's hope in the song that has gradually advanced to the #2 spot: "Ordinary" by Alex Warren. It's a steady climber, and it would be nice if it took the top spot next week. It seems that unless it debuts there at the top, the best a song gradually moving up could be is #2, and hopefully that theory will be proven wrong. "Die With a Smile" is still #3, down a notch, and "A Bar Song", which shares the aforementioned record of most weeks at #1, holds at #5 but once again gains points. Of course, Shaboozey's follow-ups are pretty much ignored; "Good News" drops a notch to #38. However, his duet with Jelly Roll, "Amen", which both of them performed at this week's Academy of Country Music (ACM) awards show, debuts at #77, which hopefully will advance next week due to the performance.
And then we have "Lose Control" by Teddy Swims, up to #7 from 9, in week 89 on the chart. It already holds the record for most weeks in the top 10, and now it's just two off the chart longevity of 91 set by "Heat Waves" (Glass Animals). Benson Boone's "Beautiful Things", at 66 weeks, is still in the top ten as well. Unfortunately, none of Swims' follow-ups are making any noise. So, what else is new?
MOVING TO my chart, it's a virtual tie for the top spot on the SNS 100. But it's Sylvia Johns Ritchie's "My Heart Knows You By Heart" holding on for a second week. As it was ahead last week, it barely holds off "I Never Wanted To" by Deb Browning and Michael Fite, but that duet nonetheless moves from 3 to 2. It has a good shot at the top next week, but potential competition in the coming weeks may come from.....themselves. Fite's group The Mac Daddy's Band moves7-6, while Deb's latest, "Does Your Baby Got Your Back" advances 18-9. Beach music dominates the top 10 with six entries, with two more at positions 11 and 13, and they include MT Jones' "I'd Be Lying" (9-8), Rivermist's "Oceans Apart" (dropping 8-10 but still gaining points), The Tonez's "Flip Flops" (13-11), and Jerry Powell's "Dance With Me" grabbing Impact honors (22-13).
The only other newcomer to the top 20 is "Black Doves" by Einsteins Dad featuring Ruth Morayniss. Last week, I changed the billing to include Ms. Morayniss, also known as Ruth E. Music, as the song is pretty much hers, and Spotify lists the song both as "Einsteins Dad" and "Ruth Morayniss". As the Dad has other songs released, it's only fair to give Ruthfeatured credit on this one, not to slight the regulars of Einsteins Dad who of course contribute.
Big movers on the chart are all beach music as well: The Mover of the Week was last week's Top Debut, that being "Salty Southern Saturday Night" by Pepper Creek (88-54). Also advancing are Starbuck's "Who's Gonna Love You" (50-34), and "All Because of You" by Rick Strickland and Lesa Hudson (54-37).

Moon Soul scores the Top Debut this week with "Don't Change" |
DEBUTS: Moon Soul has an awesome new song, "Don't Change", which is a worthy follow up their top 10 "Love Again". This is another example of cool, throwback soul, lavishly produced, nice and smooth. Not much is known about this artist, which might be one woman and not a band. It remains a mystery, but, as this is its third entry on the SNS 100, I hope to find out more about the artist soon. This song is a winner, and it debuts at #67.
In recent week's I mentioned that Whiskey-Chitto Ramblers, the Alabama outfit headed by Seth Storer, had pulled their songs from all music sites, as they transitioned to a new distribution company. Last week, I'm happy to report, that all their songs are back, thus "Bender Coming On", which had climbed the charts for a couple of weeks, only to be removed, is back. It re-entered last week at #101, and now climbs back into the SNS 100 at #84. While Seth himself also has a version of the song on his just-released album Chapter I, I'm going with this versions as I had started to before the removal, as Seth's solo "Insomia" continues its ascent (37-30).
Also moving onto the main chart from Tremors is indie band The Streetwalker Cheetahs' "Long Tail". If you like The Pozers, you'll like this band as well. With a guitar riff resembling The Beatles' "Day Tripper". I sense a dash of Social Distortion or Bob Mould in there as well. This one cooks, and hopefully it will hit my top 20 soon. It recently topped a couple of indie charts. It enters at #86. Bush's "60 Ways to Forget People", reviewed last week, also moves from Tremors to #88.
England's Jade Bird, who scored a pair of #1 songs on my blog chart in 2021, returns with "Dreams". While she had released a couple of EP's last year, including Burn the Hard Drive, whose title track was a disappointment, peaking at #64; this one is a return to form of sorts. She sings with emotion, similar to her awesome "Head Start". Her voice is in fine form and in great range. This should return her to at least the top 20 if not higher. Well done.
Sports Team follows up its top 20 "I'm' In Love (Subaru)" with "Bang Bang Bang". While the name of that song reminds me of that AJR song "Bang!", the song couldn't be any different. This one, while in the alternative lane, sort of has a Western blues swing to it, a "Ghost Riders in the Sky" thing. Unique enough to make it two in a row here; it debuts at #92.
The third in a series of new Orbis Max releases for 2025, "Oh Polaris", enters at #96. The core gang is back, including drummer Daniele Silvestri, who at this point, seems to now be a regular for both big Internet collectives, the other being Einsteins Dad. This one is a bit slower, more jazzy and bluesy, but Dw Dunphy's vocals remain in full control.
Two former coaches on The Voice round out the debuts. Kelly Clarkson enters with "Where Have You Been" at #98. This one starts a bit slow, and while the tempo doesn't pick up, Kelly displays her blues and emotion as the song goes on, which propels the song into new heights; a guitar break in the middle, picks it up even further. At the end of the song, you realize this is an awesome tour-de-force. While it would be nice to say this would be a big hit, unfortunately current tastes just don't know how good a song it is; but hopefully, Hot AC should make it a smash
Finally, we have Gwen Stefani, who debuts at #100 with "Swallow My Tears", at the same time her ex-husband, Gavin Rossdale entered with his band Bush, mentioned above. This too, is more in ballad mode to start before picking up, and is her best in a while.
